🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 🔑 Sermon *preparation simplified: Focus on developing a unified, ordered, and progressive flow of thought.* 🔍 Finding *the "big idea" isn't enough; you need a method to develop and structure your sermon effectively.* ☕ A *meeting with a homiletics professor revolutionized the speaker's approach to sermon preparation.* 📝 Key *words are pivotal for structuring sermons, providing unity and coherence.* 💡 Examples *include using key words like "lessons," "barriers," "features," and "steps" to organize sermon content.* 📖 No *magic formula exists for selecting key words; it depends on the passage's direction and theme.* 🎯 Key *words guide the message, ensuring clarity and direction for both the speaker and the audience.* 🙏 Effective *sermon preparation involves both studying the text deeply and structuring it with clear, guiding key words.* Made with HARPA AI

This was SO HELPFUL!!! I graduated from Gordon Conwell Seminary and I was taught the importance of having a single main idea (i.e. subject and complement). But a main idea cannot function or "preach" on its own. I believe the keywords are the highways through which the main idea (like a vehicle) can travel through. Thank you for this.

Good observation about the relationship between the big idea and the main points. Thanks for listening. Keep preaching the Word in and out of season!

Dear Pastor please accept my sincere and profound gratitude. These 17 minutes would surely help me save hours of preparation, over the period of time. God bless you today and always. Well I have a suggestion to make. You really didn’t have to restrict it to 15-17 minutes. Those of us who have benefited, I am sure, would have loved for you to practically share an outline, picking up a particular passage from the scriptures.

Thank you so much for the teaching! I am sharing it with my brother-in-law who started to pastor a church, and other people who preach occasionally. I have listened and benefited greatly from your teaching. I did hear the seriesTen lies about God and even printed out the script before I got the book😉. Wish you would preach more , and have new series coming up. I was sad when you decided to retire from the position of Senior pastor of Moody Church. Thanks again for your teaching, and please give us more of your teaching

Thanks for your encouragement @Dorcas Liu! Pastor Lutzer continues to speak, write, and travel on behalf of The Moody Church as Pastor Emeritus since he changed roles in 2016. He doesn't plan to retire anytime soon! His successor to the role of Senior Pastor, Philip Miller, has been preaching on Sundays at The Moody Church with the same commitment to expository teaching. You can visit moodymedia.org to get the latest teaching and resources as well as 3+ decades of sermons available for free. Yes! I learned this as a “transition sentence quote as part of the proposition package. The proposition is restating the exegetical theme by way of a timeless truth. Then you present an interrogative and a transition sentence using the ‘plural noun’ to show how the passage will answer the interrogative based upon the proposition. Blessings! Preach with conviction!

It was a good review of some traits of good sermons I've learned in the past. Your homiletical outline is very much deductive, that is it follows a deductive reasoning model. State a big idea and then support it with main points and subpoints from your exegesis, and illustrations and applications. I really favor this type of sermon for all the good reasons you gave. There are other preachers who give sermons that follow a more inductive (if you will, verse-by-verse) model. I would say someone like John MacArthur proceeds inductively, and is quite popular. So, would you say your "key word" style could work with an inductive type sermon? Explain how it could work.

You missed it completely that's why today's churches are in such a mess, I preached and pastored for years. If you want the Holy Spirit to be present and working in the service get on your knees with a humble and broken heart, and wait on God to give you the message He wants preached. You need a message from God's heart, not a put together man made sermon
