Academy-Award winning musician and activist Buffy Sainte-Marie speaks at the Simon Ortiz and Labriola Center Lecture on Indigenous Land, Culture and Community.
With an introduction by Simon Ortiz, Buffy Sainte-Marie shares stories from her musical career, grassroots activism, Sesame Street in the 1970's, and being censored by Lyndon B. Johnson for her stance against the Vietnam War. She touches on the challenges and importance of education.
Sainte-Marie, a Canadian native, describes herself as a ""natural musician,"" whose love for music has crossed many genres, including rock, pop, powwow and folk. Artists such as Elvis Presley, Neil Diamond, Janis Joplin and Chet Atkins have covered her songs.
The Simon Ortiz and Labriola Center Lecture on Indigenous Land, Culture, and Community at Arizona State University addresses issues across disciplines in the arts, humanities, sciences and politics. Underscoring Indigenous American experiences and perspectives, this series seeks to create and celebrate knowledge that evolves from an inclusive worldview and that is applicable to all.
ASU Sponsors include: American Indian Policy Institute; American Indian Studies Program; Department of English; Faculty of History in the School of Historical, Philosophical, and Religious Studies; Indian Legal Program in the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law; Labriola National American Indian Data Center; Women and Gender Studies in the School of Social Transformation. The Heard Museum is ASU's community partner.
Recorded Oct. 10, 2013 at the Heard Museum in Phoenix.

What bothers me most, was the lack of empathy given to her birth family. For 60 YEARS they were bullied and threatened by one of the most powerful law firms in the world. Being sworn to NEVER tell the truth or else lose all they own. Years later she then incredibly blackmails her own brother. All to protect her secret. If her adopted family wants to look the other way so be it, but as her late brother Alan said.."One day the truth will come out"...and he was right.

I was never into Buffy, I forgot about her for decades, I just discovered this story coming to a new light, it came out a couple months ago and just found it, I am so shocked at the story. I worked with Native Americans on political and land issues in California the Ohlone and Chumash, I am Irish/Romany, they just counted me as part of them, but not them. Like allies. What Buffy has done has ruined many bridges that were built. What a liar, so disappointing, I only hope all truths will come to light now.

What an amazing, intelligent, articulate woman. I first discovered her back in the early 1970's at about the age of 12 or 13. As noted, she basically dropped off the US map musically thanks to some not-so-wonderful politicians, but I have never forgotten. I am in my 50's now and I am discovering her all over again. What an inspiration for all people.

My First Nations studies prof introduced us to Buffy in class a few weeks ago (specifically Qu'appelle Valley Saskatchewan; I hadn't heard anything like it before) and I've been captivated ever since. I can't believe nobody had told me about her before; she's an amazing musician but also an amazing speaker/thinker.

Its right where she says all natives are racist, except of course herself, as she goes onto defend Christopher Columbus and his men as just having "bad management"! Buffy, with better management would they have done even better (??) in their plan to annihilate ALL INDIGENOUS PEOPLE FROM NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA??“ Does she even know what they did? Or maybe she is related to Christopher Columbus....His boat was Santamaria....her name is "Beverly Santamaria 🧐

She confirmed something I also discovered. In her explanations about European history... the white race (my ancestors) who came west after a thousand years of vendetta (which is what feudalism is), having been literal serfs and slaves, terrorized and violated for long generations, desperate for their own place (which still remains "the American dream - one's own place), having been told this was an empty land... to discover they were again servants to the robber barons and finding themselves participating in a slaughter... creating a "fought for land"... Now I stand, as an inheritor of this horror, and so relieved that this amazing Cree visionary allows that I also have a place to stand on the earth in spite of my white skin, and that I can also be part of the solution to this... and help create a just world. I meet Indians who tell me, "go home white man"... and with no home to go back to, I have to say, How? As a child I met Don McCloud (husband of the Nisqually indian Activist Janet McCloud - Yet-Si-Blue - who I also met, not knowing then how important she was... Don worked with my step-father, and he told my brother one day that he was quite enthused about the American space program since he fully expected that after the moon landing, that the move into space would go forward full tilt, and the white race would go into space, and leave the land to the original people. It didn't quite work out that way... so, well Buffy is right, in a lot of ways, we are all refugees... but with the creative power to forge something entirely new, and bright, clean and resilient. Idle no more is for me too. Thank you - those who posted this... I feel so much better, and empowered, and as you rise, I rise. I (like you) have some cooking to do... my own gift to serve up, and my own part of the solution. This Buffy Saint-Marie, she is a leader I can follow the example of. Many thanks.

What an amazing human being! Think it was '67 when I bought my first Buffy album. I remember buying her first MCA recording "Buffy", when it was new, along with Yellow Brick Road. Listened to Buffy's album twice and couldn't move on to Elton. Saw her tour with that album. Each subsequent release of hers was difficult to find, even new. In 1969, I had performed her song "Moratorium" at a Vietnam war rally in my hometown. The local paper only heard the "f" word. Ah well! Art and activism have shined through her career in ways one can only humbly aspire to. Thank you for continuing to inspire a better world.

@michaelerickson5623
@michaelerickson5623 10 жыл бұрын
Indian folk take time... it's one of their strengths. Stories and patient dialogue are part of their being, so it's good for us to set aside our impatience, and drive toward a singular goal, and listen to the story, learn from it, and allow the speaker to set up the ideas as they feel they need to - since understanding in depth is what they usually aim for. He was not taking "so much bloody time"... He was setting a context. I personally enjoyed it.

Me, me, me, I, I, I,... Geez, do you think Bev could brag some more about herself? I can barely watch this farce... with all the rings & things to reinforce her act and all the over-the-top expressions. Also, was she actually really blacklisted? I think Its just part of her act "The Narcissistic Liar".

I feel sorry for you. Don't watch it if it bothers you. Do something for your own health. Whoever she is, she was working for we indigeonous and she used the gifts God gave her in our behalf- not much for her own. You should get to work on your own unhappiness . Stop drinking if it is a problem stop eating junk food , if you do. Learn something new about your own talents and use them for good . I understand why you feek so " betrayed" but that was you being manipulated by media. Not by Bev. (Buffy)

Buffy can espouse the virtues of 'play' all she wants. If you have a natural voice and ability like she has, you can make a career out of playing. If you want to be a serious musician and play in an orchestra, you have to work at it. And much of that work is not much fun. What she's saying is basically leftist nonsense: Let children play their way to being an astrophysicist. And people sit there and applaud this because she's telling them what they want to hear. Take another example. If you want to be a Biblical scholar, you have to learn several archaic languages and put in years of study into methodology. If you don't, you won't be taken seriously by anyone and you're wasting your time. Does she think one can learn engineering by 'playing'? She brags about not doing sports. Fine ... but why would she brag about not getting any exercise as a kid.

She's just telling people to find their joy, and let that inspire the work. Do you know how many people work till the cows come home and don't produce anything worthwhile, simply because there's no real desire or inspiration involved? Also you're assuming that, as she's naturally gifted, she didn't work to hone her talents. Is that because she's a folk musician, and therefore a lesser artist than someone who plays in an orchestra, in your estimation? She achieved what she did through a combination of work and play, and finding the balance between the two, is an art in itself.

@@giovanna722 Oh my goodness go watch her latest on Tiny desk. She still sings off-key and never tried to hone anything. Still has a goat vibrato. She is far too NPD to accept she has no talent. The only thing that got her this far was pretending to be an Indian.

Haven't you noticed....all Buffy does is brag (and gloat). She is the BEST the FIRST, the ONLY. Finally exposed! What a fraud. And how disgusting is this video where she defends her Italian relatives who conquered (can't use the real words to describe what they did, because youtube will block my comment) the Americas on the boat that shares her real last name! BTW great that you said something was amiss with her before the rest of the world caught up.

As we speak- Buffy is being slandered, left, right and centre. She knows her own truth, her own integrity... I think people should decided for themselves- who is right, and who is wrong...

For those of us who remember the JFK assassination like it was yesterday as I do...this has been a very painful, and difficult revelation. She had one of the most powerful law firms in the world go after her own blue-collar Boston area family for 60 YEARS and then years later blackmail her own late brother...just to keep her secret...this is incredibly sad.

I think there is much more to this story than meets the eye. I didn't know the facts you have mentioned here. I am an expert on toxic families and have seen and heard it all. I think that the jury is still out- on Buffy's true identity... @@mboiko

@@Dave183 From what we now know Buffy (born Beverly Jean Santamaria in Stoneham MA) was an Italian/English girl raised by her 2 biological parents in Wakefield MA. A totally normal childhood outside Boston where she had no interest in indigenous people growing up UNTIL she went off to UMass Amherst where she majored in Teaching and Oriental Philosophy. This is when she first joined an on-campus indigenous interest group which led to her early on-stage indigenous folk music persona...much to the surprise of the family who raised her outside Boston. Looking at her Elementary/High School yearbook pictures it's very clear she was one of many white Italian-American girls growing up outside of Boston at the time. Her uncle even went to the local paper in the early '60s to set the record straight about his niece saying actually she had 2 white biological parents and that this was just an indigenous persona she created all herself to help her career. Ironically in her High School Yearbook, she said.."plans to be an airline stewardess". I will try to post a link to the yearbook picture below...
