Detroit authorities hold news conference after deadly block party shooting

The Detroit mayor and Detroit police chief held a joint news conference Monday morning to discuss "illegal" block parties following a block party shooting that left two people dead and 19 others hurt.

I live on the street this mass shooting took place on and I don’t know why they keep callin it a “Block Party” because it WASN’T. A block party is a party that the people who LIVE on the block throws to have fun with their neighbors that ALSO live on the block. We didn’t know them kids. They don’t live on this street. I’m sure majority of them don’t even live in this area. This was WAY too close to home. Maybe open back up the Recreation centers so these kids have something constructive to do with their time other then drinking, smoking and shooting up a street they don’t even live on. We have a LOT of elderly people on this street and that was soooooo disrespectful and dangerous for them AND the rest of us. That ish was so sad.

I'm a reading teacher and students are taught character traits like respect, empathy, integrity, and compassion. In many cases, kids don't see these things being demonstrated in their homes or community.

What’s going on in the Black community? Seems like they’re going backwards instead of forward. Gangs were heavy when I was younger in the Asian community. All my brothers were gang affiliated but as we grew up and had children, we wanted better for our children so we steered them away from gun and violence.
