Plus, with Carl's condition as it is, Markus probably had to handle a lot more chores out in public, like picking up the paint. When even just collecting a pre-arranged order of paint gathers Markus as much hostility as it did that one time, I think his anger having personal feeling and experience behind it was completely reasonable. Not just those active situations, too - passive ones reinforce your place in society just as much, and the game frequently did show examples of segregation, including literally classic passive tactics, like segregation on buses (e.g. those standing only 'android compartments')
