Scott,one of the best tools to save time I ever bought was a Snap On air powered gasket scraper kit. Also a good tip is to always change your oil before storage. A lot of the pitting on besrings come from sitting with acids on them.Fresh oil protects the internals from corrosion. When a engine sits all the gunk goes to the bottom of the pan and when you start it all thst nasty gets sucked up and can bypass the filter when the engine is cold.I see all these "first start after xxx years "vids and cringe to think of that 20 year old oil going through the engine.

Thrusts only wear on manual transmissions opposing the pressure plate loads when the pedal is pushed in, another reason to not ride the clutch unnecessarily, in an auto the only end thrust should be from the bevel gear train or engine incline. Some of those big end bearings looked about ready to start shedding, good catch.

They will likely never retro this technology to older engines but the start/stop business brought about new tech on bearings to keep all the extra stops from being a wear issue for bearings. The bearing shells have coatings sprayed on as molten metal. It is sometimes called sputter bearings due to the noise during the process but the engineers call it physical vapor deposition. The spray metal coating holds oil better. The bearings should never touch the crank as the oil film is supposed to be the cushion the journals run in. The starts always bring about that moment of no oil flow and a bearing shell that has some sponge like quality but gives up nothing in its other functional qualities is a good idea. I have worked on some engines that got maintenance bearing changes (BMW M series engines) and I loosen off all main caps and push the bearing a bit with a plastic putty knife and then it has gotten easier so I finish with a piece of that shipping box plastic strap. I’m unsure why Detroits need the bearings changed but the BMW engines that need it are very high specific output and more frequent oil changes and damned expensive very special synthetic oils don’t seem to stop it from happening.

If you ever need a helper I think I could do you some good. I’ve been working on those engines for 30 years and I’m ready to retire. But a road trip to work on an engine like that without the pressure of getting it done in a certain time frame would be awesome. I’m better with the DDEC engines but I’m 100% sure that I could show you some things that would piss you off because you didn’t know them 20 years ago. For example rolling those bearings out the way that you did is a really old school way to do it. And it works. But all you have to do is tap the edge of the bearing opposite of the tang with a screwdriver and a hammer and then roll out the bearing from the other side with a rolling head prybar. I am also 100% sure that anyone who has not done this is not going to have a clue what the hell I’m talking about.

Them bearings seemed to have alot of erosion on the ends. Does the amount of oil pressure have anything to do with that.
@christophermarsh69834 жыл бұрын
For the 92 series the bearings are not that bad. Oil pressure is a factor, but this is more or less normal wear and tear. It can be made worse by excessive idling, incorrect oil etc...but heat is usually the culprit when it comes to ruining them. After rolling in new bearings like this, you'll usually get better oil pressure.

It's a must that the journal wear on the crank is a great deal less than the bearings. I.E., inconsequential. Appearance will dictate weather they would rotate the crank leaving the rod up in the bore and mike the journal. Probably the same size under/over bearings went in.

Ive always wondered if there was an actual Detroit tool for rolling the top bearings out. Ive only ever used or seen others use a screw or some other junk they found on the shop floor.
@markphilpott87354 жыл бұрын
Actually there is a tool and they used to reference it in the old manuals. You take a piece of 1/4" or 3/8" piece of copper tubing about 12 to 16" long. Flatten out about 4" on one end with a hammer. Drive the upper shells out with the flat end and a small hammer. The soft copper will follow the bearing shells out of the saddle and it will not scratch the crank or block.

@Romans--bo7br4 жыл бұрын
@@BusGreaseMonkey.... Hey Scott, thanks for taking time to reply. I believe the 1st generation 92's had the same size journals & bearings as the series 71, but do to the heavier loading's (especially in trucks) they widened the journals (& bearing of course) to offset the higher power loading on the Silver Series 92, which increased the life between overhauls substantially on the trucks. Idling is something I never did with my V12's or any Detroit (2 cycle) that I ever drove for anyone else... if they were turbo'd, I would just idle them enough for the turbo and oil temp to cool down a bit and shut them down. Great to see you're keeping busy and getting your new "home" established, that will be great. PS: I don't think you ever replied to me last year when I asked you about dropping a 6-110 into "Lenny"..... they were (are) extremely reliable engines.. with lots of torque.

tallyman15 yes it is unique to this particular engine. On average, the bearings are shot at 150,000 miles on this particular one but this one could have gone a bit longer safely but his long is anyone’s guess. There were a couple that really were gettin worn pretty bad and once they go then your looking at more damage so it’s cheap insurance to open it up and change them prematurely before it gets to that point. Bearings looking like that says lack of maintenance. Dirty oil & engine abuse, Holding it at high rpm Just hammering on the rod bearings. Request oil samples & better maintenance. Replace the damper/ harmonic balancer we'll take care of that problem.

Lol, the only way to stay in the torque curve of the detroit 2 strokes was to run it near or on the governor. These are a different animal than modern diesel. That bearing wear is fairly typical for a 92 series in a bus.

@@christophermarsh6983 Awwwwww, A good running Detroit don't need all that. A 8v-92 has got some serious shit in its diaper. Even better if turbo charged.
