It has quickly become my new favorite song of all time and a good song like that is nice to listen too when your having a bad day and puts a good smile 😃 on your face when you didn’t even think it’s possible. I’d even be happy to buy it if that’s possible. I just enjoy listening to the entire song, it’s that good Brother. Thank you Scott

You put the sharp edge of the rolling head prybar against the bearing and the round edge against the block and rock it back and forth. Hard to describe but if I could show you, I’m thinking that you might be upset about all the time that you lost. I love your videos and you are always teaching me something new. If I could combine what I know with what you know about these engines??? Man what we could do

Cummins has a brass tool to roll out the bearings. I wrote manuals for Cummins, and I did nearing roll out. The final torque required a torque wrench about 5-feet long. GM really was building good stuff back in the day. Cummins still builds great engines. Sorry to see you move out of my neighborhood.

Scott,one of the best tools to save time I ever bought was a Snap On air powered gasket scraper kit. Also a good tip is to always change your oil before storage. A lot of the pitting on besrings come from sitting with acids on them.Fresh oil protects the internals from corrosion. When a engine sits all the gunk goes to the bottom of the pan and when you start it all thst nasty gets sucked up and can bypass the filter when the engine is cold.I see all these "first start after xxx years "vids and cringe to think of that 20 year old oil going through the engine.

This definitely adds to my interest in the Monk McQueen boat I've been looking at, twin 8v71TI for engines. Though there is another boat with twin 8v71N engines. ( oddly, this one boat has 5 diesel engines yet is a twin engine boat. 2 main engines, 2 generators and 1 95hp cummins diesel for the bow thruster ) 10500 gallons diesel, 700 gallon day tank ( gasoline ) to fuel up toys like jetskis. a whopping 120 tons of steel at 90 feet long and 20 feet wide. top speed is only 12 knots ( 15 mph )

Thrusts only wear on manual transmissions opposing the pressure plate loads when the pedal is pushed in, another reason to not ride the clutch unnecessarily, in an auto the only end thrust should be from the bevel gear train or engine incline. Some of those big end bearings looked about ready to start shedding, good catch.

They will likely never retro this technology to older engines but the start/stop business brought about new tech on bearings to keep all the extra stops from being a wear issue for bearings. The bearing shells have coatings sprayed on as molten metal. It is sometimes called sputter bearings due to the noise during the process but the engineers call it physical vapor deposition. The spray metal coating holds oil better. The bearings should never touch the crank as the oil film is supposed to be the cushion the journals run in. The starts always bring about that moment of no oil flow and a bearing shell that has some sponge like quality but gives up nothing in its other functional qualities is a good idea. I have worked on some engines that got maintenance bearing changes (BMW M series engines) and I loosen off all main caps and push the bearing a bit with a plastic putty knife and then it has gotten easier so I finish with a piece of that shipping box plastic strap. I’m unsure why Detroits need the bearings changed but the BMW engines that need it are very high specific output and more frequent oil changes and damned expensive very special synthetic oils don’t seem to stop it from happening.

If you ever need a helper I think I could do you some good. I’ve been working on those engines for 30 years and I’m ready to retire. But a road trip to work on an engine like that without the pressure of getting it done in a certain time frame would be awesome. I’m better with the DDEC engines but I’m 100% sure that I could show you some things that would piss you off because you didn’t know them 20 years ago. For example rolling those bearings out the way that you did is a really old school way to do it. And it works. But all you have to do is tap the edge of the bearing opposite of the tang with a screwdriver and a hammer and then roll out the bearing from the other side with a rolling head prybar. I am also 100% sure that anyone who has not done this is not going to have a clue what the hell I’m talking about.

Them bearings seemed to have alot of erosion on the ends. Does the amount of oil pressure have anything to do with that.
@christophermarsh6983
@christophermarsh6983 4 жыл бұрын
For the 92 series the bearings are not that bad. Oil pressure is a factor, but this is more or less normal wear and tear. It can be made worse by excessive idling, incorrect oil etc...but heat is usually the culprit when it comes to ruining them. After rolling in new bearings like this, you'll usually get better oil pressure.

It's a must that the journal wear on the crank is a great deal less than the bearings. I.E., inconsequential. Appearance will dictate weather they would rotate the crank leaving the rod up in the bore and mike the journal. Probably the same size under/over bearings went in.

@markphilpott8735

Actually there is a tool and they used to reference it in the old manuals. You take a piece of 1/4" or 3/8" piece of copper tubing about 12 to 16" long. Flatten out about 4" on one end with a hammer. Drive the upper shells out with the flat end and a small hammer. The soft copper will follow the bearing shells out of the saddle and it will not scratch the crank or block.

@@BusGreaseMonkey.... Hey Scott, thanks for taking time to reply. I believe the 1st generation 92's had the same size journals & bearings as the series 71, but do to the heavier loading's (especially in trucks) they widened the journals (& bearing of course) to offset the higher power loading on the Silver Series 92, which increased the life between overhauls substantially on the trucks. Idling is something I never did with my V12's or any Detroit (2 cycle) that I ever drove for anyone else... if they were turbo'd, I would just idle them enough for the turbo and oil temp to cool down a bit and shut them down. Great to see you're keeping busy and getting your new "home" established, that will be great. PS: I don't think you ever replied to me last year when I asked you about dropping a 6-110 into "Lenny"..... they were (are) extremely reliable engines.. with lots of torque.

On average, the bearings are shot at 150,000 miles on this particular one but this one could have gone a bit longer safely but his long is anyone’s guess. Unfortunately , whatever did cause them has been flushed out during one of the oil changes probly many many oil changes ago so anybody that gives you any kind of answer is just completely guessing

I was startled by the intro. Why now? Yeah, I'm just not a fan of music in blogs. The intro without the music for a few seconds is fine though.

Is that a crack at the crankshaft at 1:40 and then at 1:42 you put a paper towel over it.???? Please check that ......

Was it at the maintenance interval for engine bearings or was this just preventative maintenance?
@rogermarshall8991
@rogermarshall8991 4 жыл бұрын
Bearings looking like that says lack of maintenance. Dirty oil & engine abuse, Holding it at high rpm Just hammering on the rod bearings. Request oil samples & better maintenance. The damper should be replaced #1 main is a sure sign the . viscous damper is wore out. Is the customer complaint a noise or vibration ?? Replace the damper/ harmonic balancer we'll take care of that problem.

Lol, the only way to stay in the torque curve of the detroit 2 strokes was to run it near or on the governor. These are a different animal than modern diesel. That bearing wear is fairly typical for a 92 series in a bus.

@rogermarshall8991 4 жыл бұрын
@@christophermarsh6983 Awwwwww, A good running Detroit don't need all that. A 8v-92 has got some serious shit in its diaper. Even better if turbo charged. It's the soot in the oil & unburned fuel that causes bearing damage, that otherwise wouldn't be there. Maintained high rpm will beat the bearings & crank throws flat.

Is the amount of wear you see on the bearings a bit worse than expected for 145K mi? What can one do to reduce the amount of wear, if anything?
@BusGreaseMonkey

Those are 92 series bearings. It’s a million mile engine it just needs the bearings kept up to snuff.

Clean oil, clean oil and more clean oil. Not all GM's have harmonic dampers on the crank so avoiding resonant engine speeds also helps a lot.

I am sure you know this but SK are lifetime warranty but hard to find a dealer for them. From their site. "You may take your warranty item(s) to your local SK dealer or you may send them directly to: SK® Hand Tool, LLC 1600 South Prairie Drive Sycamore, IL 60178 Make sure to include your name, address and phone number inside the package. In most cases warranty claims are processed within 2-3 weeks, but in rare instances may take up to 8 weeks depending on product availability. If your warranty involves a ratchet or breaker bar please call first as it most likely can be fixed with a repair kit that we can send to you. Please note that you can request repair kits to be sent to you at any time. For all other warranty inquires, please contact: SK® Hand Tool, LLC Customer Service Phone: 800-822-5575"
