Thanks Kenny, I too am learning about the series 60, I've never been inside one before, so far most of it is the same as any other motor. Thanks for subscribing.

A pair of ring expander to fit the rings about ten bucks,way cheaper than a broken ring. Amazon or eBay got them for next day delivery. I got some and then wondered how I ever managed without them!. Myself and two other small shops run our own tool pool and they in it. Saves money and we got all tools ever needed covered!

I don't rebuild engines for a living, I drive a truck and do some outdoor services on the side. I don't buy many tools for a 1 or 2 time use if I can get by without it. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Gordon Robertson no worries mate,was not meant as a criticism. You clearly have a talent for what you do and for reaching a good work around to any possible problems. You probably find you have plenty people wanting their motors repaired if you get tired driving and digging!. Where about in Scotland did your ancestors come from?

Sorry to answer so sharply, it's not my nature, I am in a rush right now because the company I drive for doesn't have any local work for me and needed to send me out on the road this week, I haven't been out there for nearly 6 years and I wasn't prepared to leave my home and go live in the truck, I'm home for a couple hours right now and then have to go again.

Thanks John. Have you done that on small engines? the 2 cycle ones don't need the oil ring, the oil ring is the hardest one to compress to get it in the cylinder.

I rebuilt a Ford small block (first ever) outside in my driveway 24 years ago....it still runs today. The ring package had no instructions....I was just going by what I read in the hotrod mags....I guess it's right? I didn't even have the new pistons fitted to size the honed cylinders....just a 0.30 over machined block, and a 0.30 over piston kit....press fitted pins by a 2nd machine shop.....it should've grenaded by now....lol.

Hi Gordon I was curious as to how they were able to repair the damage around the valve seats on the damaged cylinder.
@57bagre
@57bagre 7 жыл бұрын
I'll have to remember to show that area before I put it back on, it still has a couple holes where it got hit by the valve but the machinist told me not to worry about that. He put new seats in at that valve, all new valves and milled the base.

great video, I'm thankful that your taking the time to show what your doing and how. the how to get around buying the special tools has been a huge help. I'm fairly sure my Pop and I will be rebuilding my engine with a bit more money put back. would rebuild your head or just purchase a new one?
@57bagre
@57bagre 7 жыл бұрын
It's much faster to exchange your head for a rebuilt one but it cost a lot more. I wanted a machine shop to do mine since I'm not in the habit of getting inside big truck motors and they checked out my pistons and recommended new ones, then I had them to install the pistons on the rods. I also now have a contact person when I have a question on this job. If you can cut and weld steel to make tools, then by all means do it. Thanks for following the series.

We do what we can, Pop is working on the tool for the cam on the top. I'm trying to Find a good machine shop but it is looking like I may be heading a hour from around the house. I have a 97 classic, with a 99 series 60 engine 12.7. No smoke from exhaust, but weak power at times, and uses 1 gallon as week. Oil is not contaminated from oil sample test, no oil in coolant. Blow bye is high. Changing air compressor again to eliminate that and If that doesn't curve or fix the blow by, and oil loss, next is head. If I do the head I'm thinking just inframe it and be done with it. I have no history on the 99 motor. I did get the manuals off eBay like you suggested, hoping they have some in sight on my issues.. I'm checking prices. Oh the 99 I know is 470 HP at 1800 rpm. I had an over head checked and the mechanic said rebuild the Jake brakes solenoids are sticking open. So trying to get compressor and Jake's done in a short time of one another. Then go to the head repair or inframe it. Oh my Pop said he liked the front pin and bushing video we changed mine out in Oct it helped what to expect. Thanks again for the great videos of Real issues you will see and have to deal with, their a huge help in moving through the problems.

Your way ahead of my FLD with your Classic, you have a mile of room behind the head to get at a lot of common problems back there, (fuel lines, check valve, heater hoses, starter, tranny bolts etc.)

Did they give you some assembly lube for the bearings? Did you get any of that bad ice storm?
@57bagre
@57bagre 7 жыл бұрын
Ice storm was minimal in my area, the ice was on my car and so I didn't leave until later, and when I wanted to go, the ice was already off of my car. No, no assembly lube, I put the bearings in with an open bottle of 10 w 40 poured half way full in a coffee cup, and I cheated putting those in too. They'll never know the difference, a split second after it starts up, the Rotella 15-40 will be pumping under high pressure. I'm itching to get this nightmare over.

I take it You've rebuilt a bunch of engines and repeatedly had issues when installing all new parts? I guarantee you at any engine factory they don't check every part, they just keep the assembly line moving until they find a reason to stop it. It's running fine and will for a long time.

Thank You Sir. I learned Spanish when I moved to my neighborhood in 1987, I had learned a little growing up but could not communicate, when I moved here in '87 I found that many of my new neighbors are Mexican, so I got serious about learning Spanish and was determined to learn enough to be in any conversation without translation help, I didn't know that I would never finish learning Spanish, but I never finished learning English either.

Hi Gordon if u have time i gotta ??? For ya,I have a series 60 detroit and I love it but it's getting really high crankcase pressure, do u think it could be my air compressor or just my rings worn out ....either way I'm gonna do an inframe myself thanks to yr videos I now have th courage LOL.....THX AGAIN JAMES PERRY OOP FOR LANDSTAR ......BECKLEY WV
@57bagre
@57bagre 7 жыл бұрын
The air compressor is only for the brakes, the engine runs on air pressure from the turbo charger, (will run without the turbo too) if you have high mileage you probably do need to do an in frame and a Bull Gear as well.
@pooch748
@pooch748 7 жыл бұрын
Gordon ,yea I know it sounds crazy and I know they're only for brakes but I've heard that th rings can go bad In the compressors as well and push air into th engine, my compressor is built on th engine and is gear driven from th auxiliary gears from th bull gear...i was asking if u have ever heard of a compressor doing this???
@57bagre
@57bagre 7 жыл бұрын
I have never heard of that, there is no connection from the compressor to the crankcase, the compressor gets it's air from the intake manifold right into the compressor head and then out to the air brake system. If it were possible for the air to back up into the motor there would not be enough air pressure in the brakes, the only connection between the crankcase of the compressor and the motor crankcase is the oil pressure line that comes from the motor to the compressor. Sorry but I can't see any possible way for that to happen. I think if you have excessive blow by, it is the insides of the motor wearing out (rings, pistons, liners, valve guides etc.) There is no p.c.v. system like on a gas engine to recycle the blow by, so all diesels will have more visible blow by. I hope this helps.
@57bagre
@57bagre 7 жыл бұрын
Do you have a lot of oil in your air tanks? maybe it is time to change the compressor. It's a lot cheaper than an overhaul.
@pooch748
@pooch748 7 жыл бұрын
Gordon ,no that's th thing i don't have any oil in my air tanks and believe me I thought the same thing you did about the compressor but I have asked several mechanics and they say that it's rare but it can happen somehow the compressor rings mess up and push air through the seals in the crankcase of the compressor down into the gear case into the motor don't ask me how I was just asking if you had ever heard of it so ask someone you know maybe if they have and let me know

@57bagre
@57bagre 5 жыл бұрын
I don't know why not, so far so good. The machine shop that did the head ordered that kit for me and said they've had good luck with that brand. I paid about $2400. for it and I'm sure the machine shop took a bite out of it. The whole job when I started up the motor including oil, filters, and whatever odds and ends I found that needed repair cost me about $4200. plus my labor.

HI Gordon , i m assembling 2 piece cast iron piston and skirt on conrod but dome and skirt has no sign on it . how do i know which side goes the front of the engine .thanks
@57bagre
@57bagre 6 жыл бұрын
If they're new pistons it doesn't matter, only matters on used pistons. Mark the front of the piston with a sharpie or something after you assemble them so you know from on top which direction the rod goes on the crank. The side of the rod with the cyl. # or the notch for the bearings goes to the driver or starter side. Thanks for watching. Gordon.

shouldnt the rings be end gapped for the cylinder they are going in?
@57bagre
@57bagre 7 жыл бұрын
I can show how to do that before I install the pistons, but checking tolerances is mostly for reusing old parts. I asked the machinist if he thought I should do that and he said it's extremely unlikely to find a problem, he never has on new parts unless they were wrong application. If I checked ring gaps, then I need to check tolerances on every last piece going back in. Thanks for your question.
