Wow! These engines bring back memories. I never had a lot of experience with other diesels, but the 53 and 71 series seemed like very simple engines back in the day. I remember a tired 6-71 we had in an old GMC. We let it idle for hours to run some air tools. Not a good idea and we knew it. I went to move the truck and had a run away for a few seconds while it burned the oil that it had accumulated. That first run away got my attention. From them on I made sure it was throttled every few minutes to clear that crap out. .

Lol, yeah they can start to slobber if left idling too long.:) I try not to idle more than I have to.:)

Who needs a Simtest machine!!!! You and a breaker bar work perfect! Your coveralls need a little attention to the zipper! LOL!!! Nice job!

Lol, thanks, I'll be getting some new coveralls for X-mas.:)

Nice rebuild there. Great you do all the measure checks. Detroit Diesel Series 60 uses the Loctite 515 for sealing the rear and front engine housings to the block. Works OK. Do need to let it cure for a day before running the engine.

Thanks, I used it today on a couple of gaskets.:) See how well it works.:)

Nice build, 515 is a great product in the proper application 👌

Hello, where would a person find the proper size suction cup and vacuum pump to test wristpin retainers
@detroitgarage9430Ай бұрын
I would try PCIndustries and ProDiesel Parts. If they don't have they'll know where to buy one.:)

That appears to be an AmsOil ( or possibly Lucas) bottle.....is it just a bottle, or do you use a particular assembly lube ?
@detroitgarage94302 ай бұрын
It's Rotella T1 in an Amsoil bottle.:)

Unrelated question (well unrelated to today's video ) just replaced the followers on an injector and am curious if my springs are "bent" or collapsed. I can install or remove the retainer pin without compressing the spring...seems like potential for catastrophic disassembly while running. Unless the running adjustment is such that there is never any valve lash ?
@detroitgarage94302 ай бұрын
There should be tension on the follower so that the keeper doesn't pop out. The springs do collapse after some time, ( a lot of time ).:)

can you hotrod these 453's? I was thinking of a squarebody chevy with one to have as a fun street cruiser and burnout machine.
@detroitgarage94302 ай бұрын
You can, seeing if I can get a nice 300HP out of this one.:)

@detroitgarage9430 oh snap that's awesome...got my gears grinding now...the silver series would be the best bet as in motor to find for a project like that?...could you mate them to a th400 trans or not a good idea?
@detroitgarage94302 ай бұрын
@@minibikemadman Yes the T or Silver would be the best bet.:) TH 400's are a bit dated and you'd want something with a lockup convertor. Something like a 4L80 or 6L80 would be a nice option. In my F350 I'm running a Ford 5R110 behind my Silver 4-53T and that's just about perfect.:)

Your build is looking really nice! Wish you could have spent a bit more time with camera on the eye candy truck body in progress near the beginning. Gotta remember some of us utubers have short memories. How's your fuel mileage on the f350 ? In my experience with a turbo 16V71 jimmy in marine application seemed like to use about 10% more fuel than modern 4 stroke engines with staggered fuel injection. What are your thoughts on that ?
@detroitgarage94302 ай бұрын
@@kencannuck Ah the 48 Diamond T will be getting a lot more coverage once the Silver 4-53T is finished. I'll be doing a build video of the transformation.:) Fuel mileage on the F350 is pretty good and is maybe 5-10 % more than the PowerStroke it replaced. The nice thing about the Detroit is its ability to burn 100% waste veg oil, so very economical to run.:)

Do you have to check the ring gap before installation? Is there specs for doing so ?
@detroitgarage94302 ай бұрын
Yes I check the ring end gap, procedures in the manual.:)
