I am really looking forward to the start up. I sure like the sound of those engines. This kind of work was like therapy to me.

I didn't see you mention anything about the valve seats. If they are bad do you recommend grinding them or just replace? How about the valves? What are the U valves you mention? I have stellite valves for the turbo engine. No grinding them. Can you just use regular valves on a turbo engine?. I want to rebuild my 4-53T but need to make room in my garage. Too much stuff. Thanks for the great video.

Thanks, In my case the valve seats were in excellent shape, so none had to be replaced. If you do have bad seats they can be replaced and or be reground if they have enough material left on them. The U valves are a replacement to cover both T and N engines. You could possible use N valves, but I'd recommend using T valves. In the past if the seats were badly worn, I'd send the head to the machine shop. Now that I have some more experience I would just replace them.:)

Do you need to lube the valve stems and guides when installing valves? Do you need a special tool to install the valve seals? Thank you for these videos and responses. They are very informative more than just the service manual.

Yes, I dip the valve in 40 weight oil before installing. For installing the seals I used a 3/8" socket for these seals. I did make a tool, but the new seals are different than previous seals I've used. I ended up using a 3/8" 12 point socket for these seals.:)

Do you or have you used Detroit anaerobic sealer? Like fro series 60 gear housings. We use it at work on everything thing that wont wiggle. Fixes cats oil cooler leaks from time. Makes ISX front and rear structures never leak. Any metal to metal surfaces. Nothing against the ultra black that is good stuff also.

Yes, I recently started using Loctite 515 and that's a great sealer.:)
@doodlevagner5675Ай бұрын
@@detroitgarage9430 Yes i believe thats about the same stuff. The N14 had issues with fretting on main bearing caps. When engineers designed the ISX they came up with using 515 between the caps and block. It works on N14's too. Simple fix

Question for you. Do you put water in the exhaust chambers over night. I have done that to see if I had a leak after installing all the exhaust valves? The water will leak out around the valves, and it will show that the valves are not set right. Great video.

Thanks, yes I leak test them using diesel fuel.:) Same thing, leave them overnight and check in the morning. If any leaks shop up I lap the guilty valve and repeat.:)
