this is a close look at what a zoo makes from its operations. i used the Detroit zoo and the actual financial statements provided by the zoo and audited by EY. The zoo brings in around 15 million from tickets sales and parking. they spend about 9 million on animal care. after all revenue and expenses they take home about 10 million in operating income. they also get different types of grants each year. The city of Detroit gives the zoo about 14 million. without this extra money from the city, the zoo would not make a profit. the city actually owns the animals and buildings but an organization operates the zoo. the organization is paid a certain amount of money and the rest of the money is invested in mutual fund and bonds.
What went wrong:
this was originally going to be a video of the zoo itself, but i wasn't really satisfied with this type of video, then i had the idea to make look at the financial statements, so the footage i took at the zoo wasn't really usable in the right way, i did put it at the end of the video,
What went Right:
finding the actual statements from the zoo and being able to see exactly what's going on was great.
What I learned: I learned quit a bit about the financial operations of a zoo.
What I'm grateful for:
For having an accounting education from a university of Michigan. The ability to read financial statements and accounting information is something i always wanted to have as a skill.
