The mining of the basalt (a kind of rock) is the first major step before extracting coal from Deocha-Pachami which has an indicative coal reserve of 1,198 million tonnes and is spread over 12.31 sqkm. Sources said that the basalt found in Deocha-Pachami is famous for its superb quality and is used in the construction of buildings and roads and bridges. A total of 142 million tonnes of basalt could be extracted from the area that has been identified by the state government. This is why many agencies have already shown interest in taking part in the tender process.

I am retired coal mining eng from suri of birbhum. The coal seam is 159 m thick and struck 28o m from ground level.the reserve is big ,low quality of gcv.the reserve was discovered in 1978 by gsi.in 1994 cesc of goenka took the block.due to basalt stone over coal is geological marvell.the fate of the mine is technically not easy by indian technology as its great depth where huge free land to dump overburden is required. At 69 age, i do not expect coal from i t easily.but basalt stone if sold by govt will fetch good revenue.but muscle man will not allow it.the mine may be a waterloo for any govt like wb where land is not easy.coal india there fore took no interest in this difficult mine.worlds 2nd biggest is a rediculous proverb for a non mining persons.
