I remember renting this on DVD and watching it with a friend one night. Movie was over, we let it run through the credits while we talked because we were so bored neither of us could be bothered to turn it off. After a while the DVD screensaver thing came on after the movie auto-shut off and we kept talking. Then the DVD player shut off and the TV blared white noise out of no where and nearly made us piss ourselves. The scariest thing this movie did was bore us enough until my TV gave us a jump scare.

I know this is a little late but normally EVP isn’t just a passive recording. Most of the time people are asking questions or otherwise trying to provoke communication. I think that’s why the medium said it’s like a ouija board. Thanks for the review! Edit: in fact you said it yourself at about 19:30

Can't remember you saying but a big point of the film that makes it compelling is the fact that the main character misreads pretty much everything and though his actions in trying to save the woman at the end are noble it ultimately leads to his death. A big clue for this is his visit to the medium where she tells him the difference between her and him is she has protection from the evil spirits from her own spirit guide and he has none from using EVP. We also learn from her that he is misreading the EVPs and Messages. What he believes to be a message from Anna in the present telling him to 'Go Now' and save the people on his tapes is in fact itself a future event of HIS impending death. This plays out when he gets to the building site and Anna appears to him how she does on the tape, and her message to him wasn't for him to 'go now' and save the people but to 'go now' and get out of the site, a warning to him not proceed, however he misinterprets it and he pays the price for it.

Far more watchable than Nostalgia Critic. Good example is NC calling The Mummy (1999) a bad movie which he tends to compare too much to the 1920s original. Whereas Deusdaecon has a much more technical and more fair review. Even goes as far to say that the movie was actually good.

we had a seminar on EVP once where it became clear that if you listen to any short segment of (sometimes filtered) white noise (or other randomized sound sources) for an extended period of time you will start to hear voices. It's just the brain trying to find patterns that resemble language in a highly unstructured soundwave. Putting subtitles underneath a short clip of noise can be even more suggestive because you are already priming the listener to hear that phrase in the sound.
@misschris3255 жыл бұрын
Interesting... was the whole seminar on EVP, or paranormal experiences in general?
@AlbertSirup5 жыл бұрын
@@misschris325 no it was actually on the history of radio as part of the sound studies department of my school. EVP was just something we dealt with for a few sessions as it also symbolizes the kindof spiritistic qualities people ascribe to new forms of media. As I am studying at an media art school, our professor was mostly concerned with how media can trigger people's imagination (both in terms of creativity and in terms of the paranormal).

I think the husband was trying to come to terms with his grief, and it can cause people to have bouts of extreme rage/despair, as they can't come to terms with what's happened, and are trying to rationalise it to themselves. I've had this happen to myself in that past, and as such i still haven't moved on from that traumatic event, but i had a similar response, when someone pressed me about the subject, where i felt like they had stepped into my personal space, and i needed to forcibly push them away. The rest of the film goes into crazyville from that point onwards, and if it wasn't for some incredible acting from Michael Keaton, i think it wouldn't have had the punch that it did, as i still reference this film from time to time, as it is still a work of fiction worth watching.

Enjoying this review. Someone could literally understand the movie without seeing it but watching your review. Very well done. That said, I found Price's death eery and sinister looking. However, it was bizarre as to how he died and why the video tape was wrapped around his neck and what looked like some was also stuffed in his mouth. Kind of reminded me of the deaths in the movie the ring. Regarding the end of the movie, it appears the construction worker killed John rather than the 3 silhouettes from the white noise. Because the construction worker walks back to Mary whistling. For him to have gone off screen and walk back whistling with confidence indicates it was the construction worker who pushed John off the ledge. However, it seems the evp influences good (John) and bad (construction worker) people to do good or bad depending on the voices being good vs bad as illustrated in the movie.

From a mechanics perspective, evp and Ouija are simular in that in both, questions are asked of the dead.
@Fickji5 жыл бұрын
Ritual. Ouija boards you need the board (or a piece of paper with the letters and numbers) and a person to ask questions. EVP you need to press the record button and listen for something to speak. Both are inviting something in to talk. I think I remember a few superstitions and rituals surrounding mirrors as well. Like a Victorian ritual that had a woman standing in front of a mirror in the dark with a candle asking who she would fall in love with. On Halloween of course.

This is one of the more obscure 2000s horror films, it was a pretty big deal when it came out as it was basically Michael Keaton's return to the big screen. Nowadays if you ask people, hardly anyone knows about this film. This film sucks in my opinion, this film deserves to live in the realm of obscurity.

Receiving a phone call from "a dead person" is not rare these days. Phone companies are supposed to wait three months before releasing the number to be reassigned, but they do it the day after being notified thinking no one will notice. Mother got a shock when she got a call from father two weeks after his funeral: turns out it was the AC repairman with his "new" phone number he got earlier that week. Fucking Verizon.
