Great video! Just a heads up about the Skillshare thing... I noticed you need to enter your payment info for the trial and they automatically charge you for the year if you forget to cancel. 😅 Maybe a good idea to give people a heads up in the video? I think transparency is key in these collaborations 😉

It's never the hard work that gets people, it's the burnout. And that is what they mean when they say 90% of people fail. As someone who built there own relatively large SaaS company on my own, that my competitor has like 300 ppl working on I can say that I have suffered burnout more times than I can count. Way I deal with it are, I don't force myself to finish a feature. If the feature is taking me excessively long to finish, and I feel I start getting tired of it, or bored of it, I will leave it as it is, shelf it and move on to something else I find interesting and will revisit and finish the half finished one later. I flip flop like this constantly and it really helps. I take breaks, sometimes really really long breaks like up to 6 weeks until I feel like I am refreshed. I give myself downtime without feeling guilty, I deserve down time just like everyone, so I enjoy it and make sure I don't feel guilty. Just to name a couple ways to deal with it...

I do much of the same! I naturally have wide interests which helps me avoid burn out. I struggle still at times with being okay with taking breaks altogether, but as I've gotten better with that I'm noticing I surprisingly am doing more work in less time.

Absolutely agree that setting deadlines is not good. A goal yes, but pushing yourself to meet a deadline will makes things worse and also can make you quit and never finish your game. This is art creativity needs to flow at its own pace. Also, any type of learning or mixing it up with tools, environment, different computer, taking a walk can shake up the feeling of being stuck and help you discover a whole new angle. Excellent advice. Finding a few others who understand you and what you're doing is huge as well. It can hard to find a community that works for you, but discord is a good start usually. I love that you're sharing the less technical side of dev too, more people need to see that and learn to manage their own creative process which to me IS the game :).

I really appreciate the departure from technical dev tutorials to make this, as it is probably the hurdle stopping more solo devs than any technical challenge. Switching things up really does help; I work as a web dev, and taking a break from games to work on my own web projects helped me to get back into working on my games. I also had that exact feeling that "I need to be working on the game each day"; it isn't that we don't know these things, but it's that we often disregard or ignore them because we want to see our games become reality, so honestly this video is great just for reinforcing these things.

I think I might be going through this right now...although a big part of it is realizing that game design is at its heart an artistic endeavor and suffers from the same weakness as all who court the public's fancy

Burnout...well, every programmer once in a while has one😅

Are you motivated to work on your game? Or are you feeling obligated to work on it? Motivation usually lasts a few months. After it's gone, you need determination to fill its role. Not many people are ready to be determined and discipled for that kind of life style. Great video btw 🙂

I'm starting to develop a game, i'm currently working on the story so i have a clear idea of what i'm gonna do. I know what i want the story to be about, but i have a really hard time making decisive choices about it because i want it to be as good as it can be, even tho i know it doesn't have to be perfect. I get stuck on one part for so long and idk how to get over it. Do you have any tips on that?
@Ringo_Asakura4 күн бұрын
Oh, Thanks so much! I actually need this, cause I'm procrastinating for months with my game.. I'll watch it now. Btw, your inventory tutorial is good but you used tree to add the apple and didn't tell what the tree code is.

2:47 That is a bad example. If we only did yard work only when we wanted to then it will always end up being an absolutely monumental undertaking. Weeds do not stop growing and mulberry bushes consume entire stretches of chain-link fencing in a season's time. Trust me bro. You are not enjoying any of that.

The big problem is that sooner or later you will encounter a task that is a chore, a big one, a difficult one. At which point, you need to power through it, no matter what. Taking a break from writing a difficult bit of code can be a problem, as you might take a while just to get back into it, so don't take too long a break that you forget what you were doing. My advice, step away from the screen, a think about your project while taking a walk.
@6355744 күн бұрын
If I find myself stuck on something I just need to move to something else or I wouodn't even be able to get anything done. And the best solutions don't come from stress anyway. usually when I'm taking a break I find a new easier perspective. I didn't figure out any pattern for taking breaks but haing a set time after which I just dont touch the game and just relax seems to work most of the time. Also acrually taking the weekend off as if I was acrually getting paid should work too. I sometimes just script random ideas on days like this. Just today I came up with 40+ character concets for a maze runner roguelike game that i dont have time to make lol. Perhaps i hsut need to finish a few really simple projects that end up as videos to get my pace back.

Ok I need someone to help me answer this. I just graduated and I want to be a game developer but at the mean time my family isn't financially stable and I know full stack web development(React js) and mobile app development using React native. So I want to use my web and app development skills to be able to get a job for sustainable means of income and in order to land a job I need to have done some good projects. My concern is as doing this projects I want to be able to learn game dev but joggling the two isn't easy how should I go about it
