Devan, it looked as if you had a queen cage covered with bees at the point you added the empty drawn out frame. Did you requeen? I watched 3 times and you didn't say you had. But it looked as if you tucked a q. cage in between the frames. Thanks Rick in Pa.

He cages the queen while he completes the inspection of the brood chamber. This way he can safely shake bees off each frame for a closer inspection.

Hi Devan, thanks for nice series :) I have a suggestion, it would be a nice experiment if you would compare two hives one in one brood box method, second in two brood box setup, and that way you could show that not only one box is enough for bees, but that way bees consume less honey, thus producing more :)

Devan - thank you for taking the time to post these informative videos. Question - your yellow hive appears to have a one inch round hole at the handle of the brood chamber. Could you please comment why and would additional entrance holes be useful? Thanks.

Devan, I have 3 hives now it’s my first year. I have already put a second deep brood and medium honey super on the NUC I bought. My 2 packages are not still single brood, and I think I would like to give it single brood management a go, they’ve been in the box 4 weeks and they’re covering about 6 frames, other than watching for swarm cells, I should have boxes ready for a NUC from the packages as they grow. Then add some honey supers once the packages fill about 8-9 frames not sure what or if there is magic number to add honey supers. Thanks for any help, love the videos....keep em coming!

Devan, what are you thoughts on the Flow Hives ? I'm located in southern Wisconsin and have 2 of them and I'm a first year beekeeper. I am doing the 1 brood box with each and so far it working out great! The first problem I had was the end of June they were filling the flow frames great, but had so many bees in the hive that i added a super on top of each hive to give them space. Hive 1 is picture perfect , very efficient use of the brood box and flow frames are almost all capped to the outside with honey and filling the super above now. Hive 2 has more bees, but were filling the brood box more with nectar , pollen and honey. My plan is after extracting the honey from the flow frames ,remove them and the queen excluder and put top super on the brood box and leave it that way for the winter. Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated. Rick

Hey mate, really enjoying your video's. Very informative. Winter here in NZ so good to get some tips for the season to come. I also run single brood chambers and am moving towards 3/4 honey supers. Just means the weight of moving them is lower than the full depth. Cheers.

amazing videos. just a few questions. For the the brood chamber you use a different size brood super compared to the honey supers, would it not be more efficient having all of them the same size? Also how do you not squish the bees when putting back the brood frames? :)

Devan, I am still waiting for a video on you: How you came to be where you are now? Did you grow up keeping bees? Where and what you took in school? Guelph? Past and current jobs? OBA tech transfer? How may hives you started with? Size of your operation and aspersions to be? Is this your full time gig? Job in the winter? Etc!? I have a feeling your not one to brag but it’s not bragging if ppl are asking for it!

Hi Devan, thanks again for posting, I'm finding this series very informative. So, while there is one clear winner between these hives, they both seem comparable to me, I take the fact you are treating them pretty much identically as evidence to this (I do recall that was the second frame you removed from this hive's brood chamber). Is this typical this time of year? Are you expecting to see these hives diverge as conditions become less than ideal, as the season progresses?

What is your plan to rectify the efficiency problem here? Requeen? Or just let them be to do their thing?
@DevanRawn
@DevanRawn 6 жыл бұрын
For now, I'll let them do their thing. I'm hoping to see that new frame get laid with a nice solid brood pattern. If this hive continues to go south after our main honey flow, then I will seriously consider requeening it. I don't really want to do that though, for the sake of this little case study.

Questions; I thought I noticed your inner cover entrance facing back of hive, is this for ventilation, not a top entrance? Do you ventilate hive any other way besides full open entrance? How about in extreme heat? Thanks for your time!!

Hey Devan - great info from your videos. Really appreciate you taking the time to do them. I tried a single brood chamber(3 of them) this year and it has been incredibly successful and so much easier to manage. Thank you! Given this is my first year managing with single brood chamber (with multiple honey supers filled), I'm wondering how you manage the hive space when you pull the honey supers off for processing? Essentially, you've got a hive filled with bees in the deep and honey supers and now you've cut the hive size down significantly. Is this something you worry about or manage? I'm not ready to pull the honey supers off but trying to stay ahead of the process and manage my hives. Thanks Devan (oh yea, cool video from the cave... nice work)

Try different way when honey flow start take swarm manual. 2-4-7-9 (2-9 honey with pollen) (4-7 open eggs with bees) put small hive 5 day later cut closet queens don't touch open queens store candy's check out 30 day.. you are taking honey eater. 2 or 3 times repeat it. You need 4 ready honeycombs each swarm. 4 swam ×3 honeycombs = 12 honeycombs. Take double honey.😎
