I’ve had really good results from my hand loads using nickel plated #7 shot with “Stretch” wads from Ballistic Products and 3” Fiocchi hulls. I also like the Fiocchi factory loaded 3” #7.5 shells. I use my 410 primarily on squirrels, I definitely agree that 30 yards is about the maximum distance for good center of pattern hits. Like everybody else I own 20 gauges and 12 gauges but I cut my teeth on a 410 when I was 9 years old so it really makes for an enjoyable hunt that reminds me of hunting with dad and learning to be patient and wait for a good shot rather than wounding animals that run off and suffer. Great video gentlemen!

A worthwhile investigation for anyone interested in load, gauge or shotsize to watch. A friend of mine started his son on 9gm of 6's in a 4-10 on clays; the youngster got used to it and was hitting all of the clays and he learned the effective range - around 20 yards. This paid off when he moved to a 28 bore and game.

Fantastic Dave, great video. Very much looking forward to 20bore and 28bore versions of this video.

This was an eye opener but not really a surprise. Iv used. 410,s for years and always got the best out of mine at 25 to 30 yards. Iv patterned a few cartridges and and beyond 30yards the pattern just was not there. Not a beginners calibre a semi auto in 20 guage with a shortened stock is much more usable. Well done to you both. Can't wait for 28 guage and 20 guage. All the best. Tony

#8.5 tunsten super shot, 11/16oz load. Absolutely deadly out to 65yards in a .410bore. Rarely do you find pellets that dont completely enter and exit a pheasant. Many more pellets on target that retain more energy, and penetrate much deeper will always down more birds
@JohnB-dr8sk2 жыл бұрын
TSS is great, but the problem is you have to be independently wealthy to shoot them in any number.
@eduffy49372 жыл бұрын
@@JohnB-dr8sk not really. You can buy bulk loose shot, a sack of overshot cards, and roll crimp in a cheap drill press. Beyond that one needs only a hammer and punch to deprime hulls. I can reload for comparable money of say boss bismuth 12ga rounds. $1.59ish per stick. I dont shoot extremely high volume, nor do i hunt every day, or make my living from hunting. What i do enjoy is making the most of each shot each shot i take. I have triple the pellet density as steeln better penetration, more downrange energy delivered on target, and a far more devastating round overall. Rarelyn and i mean rarely do i ever need to follow up with a second shot on downed birds. If they fall theyve usually caught plenty of pellets to immediately stone them mid air. Even at 50yards, its rare even on big ducks that i have to search for pellets in a bird. They burn through like a damn laser beam. So in shortn yes it is more $$$per shot, BUT when i can run a wider pattern, more open choke, and triple the pellet density per shot, and never need a 2nd shot to kill cripples, it really is not any more expensiven and i routinely can drop 2 birds, sometimes 3 with one shot at 30yards and beyond if theyre clustered up. Steel has its place, as does bismuth, but when im aweekend warrior with 4 of my young boys with me, somebody needs to do damage on the birds as theyre youngn like to shoot, but mostly miss.lol

Another good 1 Dave I've watched both of your videos of the 410 can you do one with a 28 bore. I can see what you mean now bye it's not a kids gun people always say start the kids with a 410 .it's nice to have things explain to you when you're new to shotguns👍

I still think a 20g under& over should be the calibre for young people 11years old to start with also they should be shown or given pattern plate testing as part of their learning. How many youngsters understand ballistics of cartridges and killing distance.

You should try and get hold of some federal TSS 410. It is designed for turkeys and the shot size is American 9 or larger, however the pellet wieghs a lot more than the same size lead pellet. These cartridges can take out turkeys at 40.

Excellent informative video again Dave. As an avid reloader myself of the .410 its nice to show people what this little gun is capable of in the rite hands. Just a matter of interest Dave where is the magnet for holding the DVD in place is it behind the pattern plate or in the bottom of the cartridge which holds the DVD in place Great work once again

I've got a load for you to try... 410 2.5 inch shell loaded with 12.1 to 12.3 grain of Hodgdon Lil Gun powder with MG410 wads loaded with .47 oz of bismuth shot. I'm using copper plated Boss shot in #8 shot. Using a full turkey Carlson choke TSS out of TriStar Cobra 2 pump. Patterns at 40 super tight and pellet density extremely tight. I plan on using it to shoot ducks as I can no longer shoot the large bore shotguns.

Great vid, and very informative. You say you wouldn't recommend a 410 for a beginner, which is fine. I'm new to shot guns but not shooting and I was / still am at the moment keen to look at a 410 because my right shoulder isn't so good. So could you please enlightened me on your views re: a 410 and why a 410 is not ideal. Many thanks Roj
@DaveCarrieShooting5 жыл бұрын
i think a 410 is handy at close ranges for learning to handle a gun, but beyond 25 - 30yds they are really a weapon for expert shots and these experts would have special loads beyond that range, i think you would be better with 28gauge and 21grms of shot to begin with

Hi Dave, the problem in the UK is the availability of decent cartridges. The uk manufacturers for far too long have got away with selling complete junk! Gamebore included and they need to up their game. However, the American loads are a different breed, Winchester or Remington would be super but we just don’t import them at a sensible price. Therefore, Reloading is where it’s at and that’s what I do. Good to get some balance after the first test. Any reason you didn’t test gamebore?
@DaveCarrieShooting6 жыл бұрын
i don't think any of the factories will be happy with my next film only factory 410 loads!! i have got my men out now collecting a wide range of of the shelf loads, i did not test gamebore because it was a spur of the moment test with what i had available at that time "just to get the debate running" i think we have succeeded in getting enough interest to further the debate, which will eventually persuade/enable 410 users to seek better loads.
@liamsomers20596 жыл бұрын
Dave Carrie Shooting brilliant news dave, I’m only at Worksop and have some Fiocchis if you need any of those in 3 inch 6 shot and 7.5. Keep on at them hopefully this leads to real change in the .410 loads available, If the Americans get it right then our manufacturers should, we are miles behind.

I have a backpacker 410 with a 12 inch barrel. Its 3inch chambers and i shoot 3inch number 5 shot . I just got the gun so i didnt go out and buy bullets yet due to the viruses going around. It came with 20 shots of remington 3inch number 5 and i got 20 of 3inch winchester 6 shot. I tested it out at 25yards just to see how it shoots and boom its loud. Ill pattern some shells out on a warm day. I want to buy some 2 1/2 inch shells.
