Devastating Argentine attack at Fitzroy (Falklands 1982)

On 8 June 1982, two companies of the Welsh Guards Battalion were sent aboard RFA Sir Galahad from San Carlos to Fitzroy in order to join the first two companies unloaded on the previous night at Bluff Cove, just to the north. Poor coordination and other problems led to a delay and the Welsh Guards were still onboard the ship at about 2PM. Having been spotted by Argentine observers, they soon became the target for a flight of FAA's A-4 Skyhawks. The attack resulted in the biggest lost of lie for the British in the entire Falklands War.

Most assets in this reenactment are not 100% historically accurate. Sir Galahad and Sir Tristram are represented by somewhat similar (although larger) supply ships. Argentine Skyhawks used here are A-4E models with the hump while originally, they were B models with no hump. Daggers are represented by Mirage IIIs. HMS Plymouth was represented by a Leander class frigate. Aircraft skins and serial numbers are mostly not accurate either. These are not mistakes but simply platform limitations. The UK Dept of Defence and media outlets came to an agreement that two and only two cameramen were allowed to report on this war as part of the contingent who sailed to war. One was from the BBC, the other from the commercial networks. One used a 16mm film camera, possibly a CP 16 which at the time was a fine news camera, the other a new technology video camera which would likely have been a Sony Betacam of Ikegami model. Disaster - the video camera went down sometime during the conflict leaving only the film camera to record many historic events.

Those Argentine pilots represented quite well. It would have been a more harrowing experience for the British in that campaign, if they had not had the good fortune of being hit by unexploded bombs. An excellent selection for treatment by Showtime112.

The last attack of this group, Second squadron, was June 13 against the Main British land base, almost a complete surprise, 7 Skyhawks reached the target. 3 were damaged by AAA.

The Argentine Air Force and in fact all its Armed Forces showed they are no push over and very capable . As a Brit though im glad we won , sad though at all the loses of life from this Conflict but the Falkland Islands wish to be British and as long as that is the case . Long shall it be . Respect to that Argentine Forces , they was doing their job much like the Men and Women of the British Armed Forces and im sad at all their loses . This from an Ex-RAF member ....my loyalties are for our own Forces of cause but I have no ill will towards the Argentines .

It's good to see respect from former enemies of both sides... chivalry ay it's highest. You must consider that argentine forces at the islands were not combat forces but occupation ones; war never was the mean to achieving the goal of keeping the islands under argentine sovereignty but to force Britain to seat at the negotiation table, after leaving it a few years before. Not a single argentine branch of the military prepared for a war because of that; you must remember that argentine occupation didn't produce a single british casualty, such was the core of that operation; they just had to expell the colonial authorities and forces, substituing the administration with argentine officials, under a provisory government, until negotiations were ended un some kind of agreement. If Argentina wanted a war, their armed forces would have done very different preparations to repel any attack or attempt of landing... but that was not the case; that's why the army send recently recruited conscripts, instead of better trained, weather adapted and equipped for such harsh environment; they were placed at defensive lines because they had no ability to manouver to, flank or counter attack incoming british infantry... they were sent to protect just sheeps and wait for the diplomacy to resolve the issue!!! That's why all the supplies to maintain the troops were stockpiled at warehouses in Stanley... because it was the most efficient way to administrate goods for an occupation force, not because argentine commanders were idiots that didn't know how to prepare strategic points to support the front lines or because they were cruel with their own troops!!! (Those two are the most common cliches and folklore about "incompetent" management and command of argentine commands) They didn't send heavy artillery (that was done when military actions had already started) nor accumulate big ammunition stocks. The Argentine Navy was not prepared así well; they had the older naval attack jets (A-4 Skyhawks) being retired and waiting for the new ones (Super Etendard) to complete their planned number, with only 5 of 14. They didn't place mines to close the straight waters and deny navigation to british ships. The only 2 modern submarines (Type 209-1200) needed to enter big maintenance jobs and just one was able to operare, only after hurriedly made preparations; moreover, the cree was mostly rookie and assembled for the mission, while the experts and veterans were un Germany, being trained to operate the state of the art TR-1700 submarines, designed and taylor-made for the Argentine Navy... for more than a decade, they were the most advanced and capable conventional submarines in the whole planet; the first 2 arrived just 2 years after the conflict (not war). They were also waiting for the 4 new MEKO-360 class destroyers (again, state of the art by that time) and... you know what?, they were waiting for the 6 remaining (from 8 acquired)... brand new Westland Sea Lynx HAS MK-23 ASW helicopters!!! Would you do that with the country you will go to war against? The main naval assets were a veteran british aircraft carrier and 2 Type 42 destroyers, one of them built in Argentina... it's like if today Argentina had built a Daring class for it's Navy!!! Looks that normal between "mortal enemies"? A curious thing about this ships: The first argentine Type 42 (Hércules) and the Sheffield were built at the same time; the british suffered a fire on it's stern, very close to it's launching; due to the thight schedual (and because the Queen would preside the ceremony) the Argentine Navy agreed to cede the stern section of it's own ship to help achieving that in time... so... some years later, argentine naval jets sank the stern of their own destroyer!!! Seems pretty odd... isn't? The Argentine Air Force was not prepared for naval attack missions, neither the weaponry; all tactics had to be developed and trained again... hurriedly, improvising solutions with the available resources; that's why many of the bombs didn't explode (and many RN ships didn't sunk, because of that) when hit their targets... and still the argentine birds of prey managed to nail their claws on half british flete. In brief, and just considering the same available resources at the time; if Argentina wanted a war and prepared it's dorces for that... it would have been a slaughter for the Royal Navy, even before landing a single man on shore. Even if british troops had landed, with cold weather and mountain argentine troops (which were kept at mainland during the conflict, just preventing chilean agressions); if heavy artillery were placed at necessary points to repel landings and supporting own manouvering troops... again... no chance for british infantry. If the only available submarine had it's original crew and were properly maintained and armed, 1 or 2 more british ships would have been lost (the San Luis achieved 3 torpedo attacks but without success, because failures in the during computer and wiring of the torpedoes)... the RN wasn't able to find a noisy little submarine (it needed a hull cleaning for removing incrustations); just think if both units were fully operational... Argentina didn't 'want to fight... just imagine if they wanted to. But now, most of britons make fun on "those fool, incompetent guys that started a war against thei most glorious and powerful empire ever existed ". Just informing for ending cliches, stereotypes and myths... Greetings

there is an actual film about two Skyhawk attacking at very low altitude... you can see just seconds after they hide on the shore. One of the pilots who attacked on June 8th, 1st Lt "Tucu" Cervera, is the same pilot in the classical film from San Carlos Bay on May 24th

Thank you for another interesting movie. Lower physical fitness for Guards Battalions was partially caused by the fact, that prior to the war one of them was on ceremonial duties, and they did not have enough time to be trained in heavy conditions (In the south hemisphere it was winter time). Another fact is/was lower physical expectations for Guardsmen, especially when compared to Paras or RM. I have read two books/diaries when this incident was described. One was "Soldier Song" by Ken Lukoviak, a Para who took part in the rescue effort. Another was written by ex-Welsh Guardsman Simon Westonm who was aboard and was severely burned

Being unfit is a myth put about by bad feeling among some British commanders, the lift was a attempt to hurry things up, the fact the men were not disembarked at speed was nothing less than a disgrace the danger being pointed out by a Marine who had no authority to insist on action being taken, sadly all wars experience these things.

The Welsh guards are an elite infantry Battalion of the British Army. Their fitness was never in question ceremonial duties or not. They were all soldiers first. All the rest is urban legend promulgated by those who should have known better.

In fact, at the origin the problem, is the Atlantic Conveyor that was shooted by an EXOCET, a french missile throwed by a argentine Super Etendard. This missile was throwed for sinking a warship but it has missed this target and it has arrived by mistake on the Atlantic conveyor which sunk with all the helicopters of troops transport. It's the reason why thez use these ships the Sir Galahad and the other one. When they arrived at Fitzroy the chief of the english commando asked to get off the boat his men for security reason. The superior authority refused. So the disaster has begun.

Et impact bombe sur le flanc du Tristam.. si le Atlantic conveyor n'avais pas coule, y aurait eu en plus 1 lynx, 6 Wessex et surtout 3 chinook....a partir de la tu devines la suite. Au sujet de explosion charge de profondeur sur Plymouth, mon bouquin dit que c'est un obus de 30mm qui a percuté et non une bombe

@@dominiqueroudier9401 Cet épisode a eu une deuxième répercussion, c'est que ces hélicos devaient servir à envoyer les troupes pour la prise de Port Stanley. Et donc cela a ralenti les opérations, car tout a dû se faire à pied avec les quelques blindés que les anglais possédaient à l'époque. Ce qui a pris du temps. Quelques A-4 ont mitraillé ce processus et cette marche forcée, mais les anglais finirent pas prendre la ville car ils avaient la supériorité aérienne.

They did have blowpipe missiles but the teams that had them had not yet unloaded from the ship. They were supposed to have disembarked at dawn but because of delays were still not unloaded when the Argentine aircraft arrived.

Blowpipes showed less than 2% reliability in this conflict. Over 110 were fired, 11 by Argentina. Only 2 or 3 made to their targets, I don't remember exactly but I think it was a Sea Harrier and a Pucará.

The occasional tendency of Argentine bombs to not explode was, of course, promptly reported by the BBC and quickly rectified. When reporters are embedded in your unit, I recommend fitting them with remote-controlled explosive collars.

Maybe but I'd say not really. Even if the British had lost all the ships hit by non-exploding bombs, the outcome wouldn't have changed much because they were warships and they could afford to lose them. Had the transport ships been attacked (and sunk), that would have won the war for Argentina.

I remember this war which was followed continuously and live reported by BBC. The british ships were such easy targets with no anti air defence around them. How stupid could they be? And like someone else pointed out here it was a pity that so many who lost their lives in that short conflict. Wars are only heroic to those outside it. Showtime 112 always have you ship board Anti Aircraft defenses on stand by in an active combat zone. This happen at the Battle of Dong Hoi April 19 1972, when a Weapon System operator on board the USS Sterett CG -31 ignore the commanding officer advice of shutting down Terrier Missile air defense. He stay on alert downing a MIG 17 fighter bomber attacking the Ships in the Gulf of Tonkin .

One little mitake in this video. Daggers, Mirage and Douglas a4 flying under 10 feets. You can search in internet the photo of Carballo and Rinke when attack the ship and take reference whith the photographer and the jets.

Not all the time. When you look at the famous footage from San Carlos Water, that is definitely not ten feet but rather several hundreds of feet. If you attack a ship flying at ten feet, you will crash into it. Even if you just barely clear it and you expect your bombs to explode, the blast will also damage your own airplane. One of the reasons why the bombs worked on Sir Galahad and Sir Tristram is that the Skyhawks didn't have to go that low because there was no anti-aircraft defense. Finally, in a simulation it is very hard to judge the altitude so precisely compared to real life so it would be extremely difficult to emulate.

they cant be replaced. During the war the FAA got Mirage drop tanks from Venezuela but for A-4 nobody in the neighborhood had ( Israelies arrived with the war over )

Hey! Great video. Is this the attack that disabled the Birtish Chinooks? Their original plan was to use Chinook helicopters to get the men close to the Argentinian positions on the Islands. When the Chinooks were damaged they had to walk something like 20 miles before they even engaged.

Interesting fact (maybe) the helicopter shown with the burning ship above the Life raft was actually flown by prince Andrew. He was trying to use the downwash from the rotters to blow the raft away from the fire and smoke before being able to gwt the people out.

Simple: The AIM-9L Sidewinder provided by the Americans. Then, add a max flying time of 3 minutes over the target due to fuel limitations and lack of early warning systems. More than the Harrier, the fear was about their own limitations and how the presence of Harriers could push those limitations in seconds. If they decided to fight that would mean to eject and die in the cold sea (no fuel range left). Many ARG pilots said during interviews that they knew that statistically 50% of a flight section would not come back due to Harriers and Naval defenses. But they kept going. Almost suicidal. That, is true courage.

as you can see in the video, A-4 and Daggers were not armed for air-air combat. The only missiles available ( Shafrir Mk2 and Matra R530 ) didn't stand a chance against AIM-9L

They were not really feared. That's self boasting propaganda from the British side. Argentine pilots just were extremely constrained by fuel range limitations and unreliability of AA missiles. So they couldn't fight as they were trained maxin up their superior jet performance like higher ceiling and speed to dictate air combat conditions. They had to turn back after a few minutes and couldn't exploit high altitude high speed attack dives and supersonic maneuvering.

I'm Argentinian, and I first noted the A-4E/F aircraft instead of the Bs and Mirage IIIC instead of the Daggers used. I wish we had A-4E/F and we almost did!: Israel was caught by the US or the Brits preparing some of their A-4E/F to be shipped to us; pictures of light gray (not a scheme Israel used back then) Skyhawks can be easily found online.

75% loss rate? Those AimL’s certainly chewed up the Skyhawks. Their “Welded Wing” formations ( 1950’’s American doctrine) made for simpler navigation and on-target timing, but, as was seen, made them easy meat for the SHARs.
