I remember this. So incredibly sad. Being a Boy Scout or Girl Scout like I was is a great childhood experience. These clubs teach you to be a team player. They teach you useful skills to use as adults. Your troop becomes like a family. Tornadoes are fascinating to look at, but make no mistake, they are more deadly than you think. 💔💔

I live in Omaha and watched the funnel go overhead. At the time I had younger grandsons in Boy Scouts. Even though they were young, their troops were affected by this tragedy. I must say that everyone was impressed abd so very proud of the heroic actions of these young boys. And this whold town was saddened by the deaths. There never seems to be any rhyne or reason to the devastation of tornadoes. All we can do is prepare the best we can, deal with the destruction as it comes and pray for those who suffered losses. Usually we get advance notice that has improved even since 2008. We have storm chasers to thank for that.

As soon as I saw your title, I instantly remembered this tragedy. My son was in Boy Scouts until he graduated from high school. He was on the first aid team and they also volunteered at community events, like Special Olympics, as first aid volunteers. He was also the head student trainer of sports medicine at his high school, being in Scouts prepared him for sports injuries as well. While some may think it’s “nerdy”, they really values and life lessons, as well as important skills.

Not to take the focus off the tremendous courage and bravery of this scouts in this story, but it reminds me of something that's occurred to me due to my own experiences with extreme weather and a near tornado strike while camping: for thousands upon thousands of years, Native Americans endured tornadoes with zero warning, and were usually living in tents. Even those tribes who had villages didn't have tornado-proof houses (even modern brick homes can't take a hit from an Ef4). These scouts give us a glimpse of what life must have been like for people dealing with disaster before modern technology. And they remind us that teamwork, courage, common sense, improvisation, and training have always let our strangely vulnerable species thrive and look after one another in a sometimes dangerous world.

This is partly why the Great Plains Tribes moved with the seasons. They would follow migrations but also the weather patterns which moved them out of areas that had some of the worst weather in summer and winter. Definitely still experienced extreme events like us, but much more attune to how to live in this area with the risks.

Thank you for covering this one Recky. Sometimes we get lucky in this area with the weather, sometimes not so much. Boy and girl scouts are still regarded as "nerdy" lol, but the people who belong to those organizations are much better prepared for adulting than many. For an update on the camp, to my knowledge it was rebuilt, it is still in use, AND it now has reinforced tornado/storm shelters underground so this never happens again.

I really enjoyed your reaction to this one. I have never heard of this. So tragic that 4 boys were killed but those Boy Scouts handled the aftermath of the tornado so well. Makes me very proud of them.

I was a Girl Scout for 13 years, from Brownie in 2nd grade (1964-65) to my high school graduation (1975). I then took a troop for a couple of years when my girls were old enough. I still use the skills I learned back then. From camping to first aid, leadership, and all sorts of other skills. I was at camp every year from 1966 to that last year of high school. I remember some dandy storms but one in particular was tornado warned. It went over the camp, didn't hit it, but we were in the stone Great Hall where we had meals. Outside the window was the old train bell we used to call the units to the meals and flag ceremonies. We were going over the process if we needed to get down and away from windows when ZOT, a lightning bolt hit the bell and the thunder was simultaneously. We even felt a bit of static when it hit. I think all of us screamed. And one year, our troop was out there when it snowed about 2 foot and we couldn't get out for three days. The Great Hall had a big fireplace, which was well and good but we had to go forage the wood and the camp isn't that covered with trees. I'm so sad for the families that lost their sons, but the guys who got busy doing what they knew to do needed to have medals for great work.

If you had asked, I would have thought this was about 6 or 8 years ago. To know how much I remember this, and to know now it was just over 16 years ago is shocking. So muçh has happened weather wise in my lifetime, it all seems to feel more condensed, time wise. Thanks for reacting to this one boss, èveŕyone should remember and learn from these events. Peace.

I vaguely remember this. A really sad and shocking incident. I cannot imagine the horrible reality of losing your child in any event, let alone during a tornado. Truly sad. Those Boy Scouts were very brave, well-disciplined and amazingly trained to go through what they did and maintain calmness, order and the ability to continually check in with and on each other. How proud of them their parents and Leaders must have been. Very traumatic. Having been a nurse working in the ER, there are still some incidents that I've seen/experienced that my brain still slams the door and says "Nope, not ready to think about that yet." (Years later and I'm an adult and was one when those incidents occurred!) I hope any of those young men needing to work through issues are able to do so. Much admiration for them and I'm proud of them too. God Bless those that they lost and their families.

I remember hearing about this story later that year, it probably played on one of these shows and I just remember thinking why didn't they have an underground shelter. I believe they did go on to build one after this, I think that was shown on another of these shows. It's the same thing when schools are impacted, you know, you just think a little bit of fore site could have saved this from happening. But like every council or area they don't want to put these measures in for the cost and it's only ever retroactive when they do. There will be exceptions of course, one guy who owned a business in the US had made it a policy that they had a tornado procedure from the get go, one day it saved the lives of his workers. So these things do pay off, anyway thanks for sharing and giving your thoughts Recky and my love to those young men and their families today, especially those of the 4 who didn't come home.

I hadn't heard of this, but when I was in college in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, I drove through Burt County going between Sioux Falls & home in Fremont, Nebraska. Also, I am a Lifelong Girl Scout (& Gold Award recipient) & I grew up going to Camp Crossed Arrows outside of Nickerson, Nebraska, which is about an hour Southwest of the Boy Scout camp in this story.

Living in tornado alley, we kind of just shrug and say "Well, a direct hit is going to kill me. If it just comes close, I'll probably be ok." Having some kind of storm shelter is a must. Looking at it through your eyes, why the hell does anyone live here??? There's a million ways to get taken off this earth, usually with very little warning. But, we love it here, last word.

I hope Mr Fred gets some weather training. Him looking outside and seeing it clear and blowing off the idea that the weather may become dangerous, really upsets me.. He's in charge of these kids, he's responsible for their safety. Being under a tornado watch, any adult should know, especially a SCOUT, that the weather can turn in a blink of an eye to something deadly. Sorry, but Im just REALLY P'Od about this.
