Look at those pretty plants I have! And my cute fish in it's very pretty fish tank!" I love that.

A neat little thing for naming the dungeons could be taking a list of names, e.g., ["Salty pirates", "moon rock", ...], and then randomly picking the first part of the cave name combining with the word "cave" (check Docker container name generation as an example). Then one could store all the cave names (and their IDs), and later down the story line bring them back in conversation.

One of the things that can make transitions look weird is if they don't follow natural light rules. When entering a dark area from a light area, your brain anticipates your head getting dark before your feet. When going back into the bright sunshine, it's the opposite, feet lighter first followed by the head. In terms of transitions, to make it feel more natural, have the black bar sweep from top to bottom when entering a darker area, and sweep bottom to top going the other way. Keep up the great work, the game is looking really cool.

For the transition: I’d make the slide a lot quicker but also a lot longer, so that there is less time for transitioning and not too much going on. The title of your location is a cool effect, but I would make it so that, instead of going back up above the screen, it quicly fades away. It would still slide down from the top though.

If your planning on adding a currency system you should make some sort of boat shop. For more money you can buy bigger boats allowing you to go into deeper parts of the ocean. That could allow you to find new creatures etc. A scuba diving system could also be really cool. You could have some underwater caves and things like that. Just some ideas I think would be cool, anyways I love your work and videos they make my day. Keep up the good work. Can’t wait for dauphins release!

Transition looks great. Not too slow messing up the pace, and not too fast making you think like you're in a heavy action shooter game. It gives you time to let you think what you want to do, without making you wait through a massive fifteen hour cut-scene. You hit the pacing just fine, keep it as is!

After watching your video about switching to Godot, I decided to try Godot out myself, and it is awesome. I'm not a fan of the direction Unity has been heading in and had been considering a switch away for a while, but had invested a ton of cash into Unity Asset Store assets, so was reluctant to stop using Unity. But, after watching your video, I decided to take the plunge and actually get into Godot, and it is amazing. It was really fast to pick up (took me a week of reading the documentation and trying out some small experiments), and feels so much easier than Unity to actually make a game in. Thanks for making these videos, they provide me inspiration and motivation to keep working on my own game!

I think a great implementation for the caves is a vision system: limited vision & a need to 'craft' vision via torches. I see the issues in terms of creating a profile for the caves that will keep the torches in place, so I'll be interested in how you go wether that be a new random cave each time you enter or a created level that remains. Keep doing you DevDuck! Keen to play!

Love these chill videos. I'll second the (many) suggestions to make the transition look like a splash of water by re-using existing ocean tiles. Outside of that, my only suggestions are to give the bats bigger ears (yay echolocation) and maybe jitter the bats' position very slightly with OpenSimplexNoise.

Nice update! But wouldn't it be better to randomly populate the cave with enemies after creating it, instead of using premade tiles. This way you save space because you don't need extra graphics and it would be more unique.
@christiantgolden4 жыл бұрын
The classic space/time trade off.
@rocksfire43904 жыл бұрын
@@christiantgolden it's not really that much more time and it keeps the game from becoming repetitive. should be done in the room creation code to then check if that room should have enemies and if it does, what type of enemies and how many. the rooms could have "spawn" points which he could have finer control over if need be. this way monsters don't spawn in dumb spots that might ruin gameplay.
@harissabotic57144 жыл бұрын
I think there is a lot to learn from Spelunky's world gen. Game Maker's Toolkit has a great video on that topic.
@DevDuck4 жыл бұрын
For each room type, I can create X different variants, some with enemies, and some without. That will increase the variety you see when a cave is generated. But I get what you mean!
@ebbmo64414 жыл бұрын
I agree with Akkaren here. Right now the cave has to have a specific enemy. Instead a random generated cave tile with enemies has the advantage that it's not required to pick which enemy is added. Instead having a pool of random enemies with spawn rates helps to ease the work of creating separate rooms also for separate monster types

having the transition slide in different directions depending on which way you exit a scene might be a cool way to implement it
@sharksuperiority97364 жыл бұрын
What would be cool would be to have water sections inside of some caves, this could hide stuff so you need a boat for them. This could make the player more likely to visit these saves, because right now they are too linear to have any reason to go into them a second time And once you have work on the over world, you should make it so that you come out of a different door when you exit the cave through a different door. So you can use caves to get through areas, this also can work as a block for weaker players by putting strong enemies in the tunnel

When you enter the cave from the beach you are moving northward, yet when you enter the cave you are moving south. This looks a bit weird, is it a possibility to fix it?
@christiantgolden4 жыл бұрын
I think the conceptual logic behind that is something like " entering a cave implies descending a level of terrain, so a spelunker might find herself heading any direction at that point." Edit: but, I agree that it's a bit disorienting.

I noticed you sometimes create edges of cave ceiling without a wall below it whenever you create the small corners, e.g. the smaller corners on the U shape in the center at 8:37.
