And it makes me happier because it makes my car even more unique :) people who are working on getting one of the cars listed above wouldn't own a vantage and they've never driven one. Sure. The experience for me is the most important thing in a sports car when I'm just driving on back roads by myself I can't picture myself in anything else (sub $120K used or new, and I paid much much less than that). And It is a sports car, don't care what people think.. Also, it helps that it's gorgeous and rare and interesting and manual.

The 10,000 hour rule referenced is from a book called Outliers by Malcom Gladwell. It basically states that it takes 10,000 hours of deliberate practice to achieve mastery. The reason many people can do something for years and not become an expert is that they are not participating in deliberate, focused, practice.

I suddenly realize, listening to these guys, I have been an expert car enthousiast since my 12th! As a young teen I could recognize any car from a distance based on the tail lights, I bought magazines, year books, going from door to door with car brand showrooms to collect brochures, I was on the car coolaid for years well before I could buy a car. SM has been my favorite since forever, and I love anything off-beat, owned a BX, but also the Nissan Prairy, Honda HR-V, and I could actually explain every detail and pro’s/cons of these cars. It has been ages that I was so swamped in car memorabilia and still a can regurgitate most of the info stuffed into my system. Car geek for sure. Love their conversations, wellversedness and eloquence. Oh, and Jason can sing!!

I love everything about this. Go drive stuff. If you're honest with yourself, you won't really know what you love until you drive it. 12 year old me was hooked on 60's muscle. 23 year old me discovered Miatas. Driving a race-prepped CRX opened my eyes to a good "wrong" wheel drive chassis. Buying a Volvo 850 turbo wagon as a winter beater created my strangest car crush to date. Several Porsches showed me how amazing they can be and alternately how sometimes it's more the cult than the experience. I still love massive American torque, but I never would have thought I'd be drawn to so many different kinds of cars for so many different reasons. I've explained to my wife that I have different niches that cars need to fill; therefore it's impossible to have just one :)

Re. Asking the “experts” such as you guys on opinion about which car to buy, it’s basically like asking a sommelier about wine pairings. And overall it’s a sign of respect showing that you guys have way more knowledge and nuanced experiences with cars. But I agree with your point regarding buying super cars for the sake of peacocking. It’s literally the same as ordering the most expensive wine on the list without really knowing what you actually like.

Snow + good winter tires can be a fun multiplier in lots of cars. (and the opposite in others) As i never had the possiblity to go onto a closed track, i tend to think that i only really know a car after i used it on snow and ice. I personally like, how my 2010 E63 i had as my only car for 2 winters, is driving it in those conditions way more than how the fwd and the awd Golf estate we have in the company i work for drive. One thing about the "asking a car guy's opinion" is that it isn’t just that people don’t want to invest the time. They simply don't have the time and the oportunity to do so. And so they try to get usefull information for themselves out of someone who knows stuff they don't. If you are looking for a roof, you are asking someone who has spend time makeing, reparing roofs, and not necessarily spent years on it yourself.

The last time I owned one car was 1990. Since then I've been happiest with three, but seem always to have four. The core two get the garage, one becomes the project, and one is the daily driver. I originally believed if I had enough old cars, one would always be working...that has not proved to be the case as my Uber bill can attest. If I could only one car - any car - it would be a Z8.

Hello Mr. Cammisa, Mr. Jason! Your knowledge of things automotive is excellent, and your insights are more than worthwhile; the occasional expletives are, to me, part of the fun...what counts is your presentation. All to say the entertainment value is excellent and, combined with the valid info, what is there for a car freak not to like? It's only my interpretation so, for whatever it's worth, i say stick to videos that you present yourself, with no one else there. You say interesting things, with excellent historical perspective and awareness of same; i include in that opinion the technical side of things (witness your videos on kilowatts, horsepower, etc). You do not need anyone else to bounce things off of; your presentations are knowledgeable, interesting, and you throw in some personal inflections (and what-not) that are entertaining. When i look at what you say, i am keen, i want to see and hear what else you want to say, etcetc; when i see videos that you participate in with anyone else, it turns into a boredom fest. I've no interest in dissing any of your colleagues, there's no reason for that; what i'm saying is that your presentations require no one but yourself on the screen.

Perspective is everything. I've owned several Japanese / European cars, my taste being tainted from reading every car mag since the early '80's... One day I decided I wanted a track car. In the the spirit of doing something different and suitable for track it had to be V8, RWD, American, inexpensive. That meant Mustang or Camaro, since it was a track car the image or cheap looking interior didn't matter. I got the a sweet deal on a mint 5 year old Mustang GT and about 2 weeks into the ownership It dawned on me: That was car I really wanted all along, just didn't know it. 17 years and about 25,000 very happy track miles later I still have it, along with a 2020 GT350.

I consider myself an automotive monogamist, and have essentially only owned one car at a time during my 37 years on this earth. The key in my opinion, is to have a genuine all around performance car as that one car. For me, it has to be something more intense than that standard hot hatch level, while still not quite reaching lotus levels of intensity. Not owning any automatics is key too, because boredom should never enter the equation. I genuinely enjoy just knowing exactly how the car reacts to every situation as well as how I will react instinctively to everything the car does. It’s that “finish each other’s sentences” level of relationship. Cars I’ve owned 1. 1988 Celica All-trac (about 5 years) 2. 2006 Nissan 350z (15 ish years) 3. 2020 BMW M2 competition (new) I’m obviously not at that level yet with the BMW, but I look forward to getting there.

We now know Derek's actual age. Interesting! I thought he would be younger. This episode resonated with me. We are definitely all stuck at age 12, and that teenage experience when we had all the time to pour ourselves into our obsessions was irreplaceable. Cars captured, and still capture, my imagination. Maybe sports cars aren't selling as much these days, because when me (and Derek) were kids, and definitely more now, after school they have sports practice, then go to math club, a mountain of homework, then go volunteer at the soup kitchen, and maybe some video games, before going to bed. Now those kids are growing up, hobby-less (no, I don't count eating and Netflix as a hobby). I mean, they'll be better citizens than we are, but I can't help feeling bad for them.

I know one of the themes of this video is that you aren't recommending cars to people because you don't have the same objectives/uses for the car as the person asking, but it sure would be great for you to put out a list/guide of cars you'd recommend for certain missions. Most people cannot get a multi-car garage for one reason or another (budget, space, life practicalities, etc.), but they still want a great car that brings joy to them every day. For example, I want a relatively small, rather reliable (sadly, I'm not capable of reliably working on my own car at this point and just don't have the time to learn given my career and family time commitments), extremely fun vehicle I can use to commute to and from the office a few days a week (into a dense, major city with less than ideal parking options), can load my newborn into, presents professionally to clients and colleagues (e.g., the last-gen Civic Type R is probably too juvenile and boy-racery to present appropriately), and can still bring me a big smile on a back road. If not for the baby, the ideal/obvious/boring answer would probably be a 911 of some sort or an M2, in each case with a manual. But I think the real answer has to be some sort of sports sedan. The CT4-V Blackwing is probably perfect for this (and I'd settle for the CT4-V if it came with a manual), but it's just above my budget once one factors in dealer markups, and I don't think I can give up the modern safety features and practicality to go back to the mid-2000s. So where does that leave me? A GTI? An Alfa Romeo Giulia (but no manual!) or used Giulia QV (but no manual and a fairly well documented history of serious reliability problems)? An F80 M3? What else slots in as sufficiently fun, practical, and affordable? The GTI? The Veloster N? All this to say, I'd love some kind of post/video/podcast episode covering your favorite cars through history for various missions. As Derek points out, not all of us have dedicated so much of our lives to knowing cars, but we may feel philosophically aligned with you and trust your opinion (an opinion honed through much more experience and much greater expertise than we might have).

Priorities: (1) enjoyable to drive - works with you rather than against you (2) mechanical/analog feel e.g. great shifter (3) easy to work on (parts availability) and relatively reliable (4) cool sound would be great Basically a not-miata Miata. Used Caterham around here goes for €30k at least. No idea what Lotus Elan costs. Fav cars owned has been Gen 3 Megane RS cup for chassis, S2000 for shifter and general drop top experience. I have had to reduce to reasonable load of two bike and two cars while trying to manage to get a roof over my head that i actually own and it has killed me to pass on some of the great deals that come up, or letting go of some my best (but arguably worst) cars. Especially the Baja bugs.

Jason, i was aligned with you on your justifying for having multiple special cars because of their value (appreciation) and then you mentioned the "modern" gen 7 gti. Having multiple cars allows you to lose less money as you can't do a lot of miles on any one car. you spend significant effort just getting some miles on each for maintenance health. Going back to a one car model means a non collectable driver. One that you are ok to drive into the ground and take a loss for depreciation. Another aspect of why having multiple cars is beneficial that may have been overlooked.

One and only one car for a year would have to be a six speed E46 M3 for me. Enough power to be interesting, and good steering and balance. As good as Mk7 GTI's are, the FWD would put a damper on things, and yes, I've driven one.

I think Jason is right about the 10.000 hours theory that Derek rightly brought to the table, in that when you are young, you probably absorb much deeper into whatever you do, like Warren Buffett investing since 11... or Mozart composing at 6 or 7? Good point Jason!

Good video. I agree about needing to experience more brands. Growing up, all I knew was Honda reliability. Couldn't accept less. Then I drove VW, understood 'dynamic gratification' and how that makes up for more frequent repairs.

If I had to drive one car unmodified for the next year, Lexus LC500 coupe or Lexus GS-F. Why? I need it to not break and my knees and shoulders aren’t going to let me do a stick daily anymore. Which really makes me sad. I learned to drive on a 1979 Mk 1 Rabbit L 5 speed 1.5L. Gosh I loved how that drove!

I feel like I started off in the mildly more unique vehicles and have pretty much stuck there. I had a Suzuki Forenza WAGON (with a manual) for my first car. Then I bought a first gen manual VW CC, and then a Volvo 850 wagon. VW Tiguan was probably the most boring, followed by a manual 06 Acura TSX (loved that car for the driving dynamics). Then got an 18 Accord Sport 2.0T with an Auto, very advanced car that could basically drive itself and was fun in a corner but not very me. Got a second car, manual 2006 Saab 9-3 Aero that I thought would be mediocre...I've had it nearly 2 years. And now went back to my roots of a 2019 VW Golf Alltrack WITH the manual transmission. They're not exotics or super odd cars, but a bit off the beaten path with the exception of the TSX and Accord. Some absolute wants: Citroen SM, Alfa 159 Estate, Volvo 850 R Estate, Pagani Zonda And like DTS, as soon as I could afford 2 cars (I was 26), I've had 2 ever since. I never want just 1 car again.

This episode was eye opening for me. I think my next vehicle needs to be German. There were a couple in my list of options, but they always worried me because of running costs. I should really experience one fully though. I went from v8 Camaro to bikes to NA Miata to my current BRZ. Think I'll pick up a Cayman or M235i next instead of a C6Z, ND2 Miata, or S2000.

The reliability of Japanese cars is great. I've had a few and they're great dailies. But nothing seems to compare to the interest and fun of a German car. Or Swedish for that matter. Every once in awhile, my Saab will randomly throw a Low Coolant warning, or not recognize the key. It's an experience lol

Really liked the avatar idea...that makes perfect sense. I like a BMW 3 series (and other luxury sport sedans) and would consider a $10k-$15k example, but I don't want the image...i want a normal car image that drives special. I also would love a Corvette at that price, but also don't want that image. If I could afford it, I would have a Chevrolet SS with manual.

I own a Citroen DS. A rare one with A/C, and a SM. It is definitely not for everyone. You need to have a proficiency in automotive mechanical knowledge, and some knowledge of basic engineering in order to at least enjoy and maintain them. There’s way too few people that can work on them. My favorite is still my 1984 Celica Supra 5 speed. It hits me in the right places.

Two things ..... One: l think a lot of times a car guy gets asked about "what car to buy" or "what do think about xxxxx?" is validation. Chances are that person asking the questions has something already on their mind (or in their garage) and are seeking validation from an alleged "expert". ln my circle of friends and family l am one of the very few car guys and every so often get asked those sorts of questions and 99% of the time l bat it away with some benign answer ......"oh, they're nice" , "that's sensible". But deep in my (Italian) car mind l am thinking either "epic yawn" or "freaking rubbish" .... but l keep civil about it, cuz......friends Two: nice Speedline T-shirt

Everyone rants about the Bangle designed cars because most people think about the pre face-lifted E65 . That is what gets stuck in your head. In the meantime the E60 has aged beautifully and the face-lifted E65 looks magnificent up close. E63s are also aging nicely and if you want a car that stands out enough without being extremely eccentric, a Bangle era BMW is your best choice. Manual E63 for under 15k. Come on!
