@@philmoufarrege i feel my biggest problem is my vowel approaching my mix.... i can get full chest up to E5 but its super "splaty" which is understandable, by no means is it a singable sound, but i can do it. if i go more narrow it thins through my first bridge around B4 but if i come back down in song its hard to not slam down to chest. like my tongue likes to fall back on the way down. i could pick a line that would really highlight that problem... im sure there are many factors ill send you a clip if you would like=)

Phil Moufarrege If I let me voice be thinner (by thinner, I mean not full fold connection) ,even from a speaking standpoint, I can connect up to a G5 with the same tone qualities as my C5 and come back down no problems and it feels good. I can physically feel the tilt happening and it’s absolutely not falsetto musculature. If I do falsetto on the same note, it couldn’t be a more different sound. If I try to add more weight(fuller fold connection), even without strain, it flat out just doesn’t work. It will not connect to through my upper range. Plus, my body is immediately telling me “this is not right for you”.

Hi there, I live in Japan - this is a forest that is a short walk from my house. I want to make more videos here but need to time it right so that there's no one around (I don't want to look like a crazy foreigner talking loudly into his camera ;-P)

This makes so much sense. I am still struggling a lot. I am one of those whose journey is really not going to be easy, but there are bits of advice that when I play around with them make a real difference and other bits I haven't understood. I also find combining separate bits sometimes gives that a-b route a detour but helps me make it to b...for example the combo of stay connected in your chest PLUS sing as you speak. I can get too 'tense' thinking about staying in chest, staying in chest etc...and forget to to release and for me a release is to try to sing like I am speaking when I am singing and unsure, and I end up sounding better. I think everyone is very unique in how they have to find the coordiation and how it works for them and it's so true that you need a teacher with a good ear and lots of ideas about how to get your around your obstacles or strengthen your weaknesses with practical advice you can really understand and apply.

I'm stuck man. Been singing for a long time. Took lessons in nashville at Singing Success Studios. Had lessons with other online coaches too. I sing songs. I'm just not about to to sing freely as much as others. My tone is the best quality i have people say. My pitch is pretty good. G2-a5 But IT NEVER is expressive and its never great. Iv been rated as a 6-7 in terms of singing and im just not where i need to be for me to feel happy with my voice. I need help.....

My high head voice is just a piercing pushing reinforced falsetto and its driving me crazy because i cant figure out out to fix that other then to just strengthen my chest voice more and im scared to do that because i might damage what i have even MORE

I just feel stuck and i know i have made progress over the years. Compared to where i was i'm like amazing. But to reach the threshold that my coaches have told me is within my potential.....it seems like i have to fly to even get that high.

Hey there, thanks for reaching out. What is your goal? Are you making music and getting out there and performing? Where do you want to be and what do you think is holding you back from getting there? What do you plan to do about it?

Hey guys, I really got caught up in technic over technic when I totally missed the obvious. I was going to compare my singing development to those fabulous singers that sing for a living. Finding out the hard way, I stopped comparing myself with those voices and just allowed myself to sing without pushing my performance. I slowly found my true voice and worked/ allowed my voice to develop. I found by singing with my talking voice eventually gave me more freedom to sing with expression. Getting over hearing my own recorded voice was a huge stumbling block but when I did finally accept my own voice the growth was well worth it. Singing is not a complicated process but fall into the many complicated technics and development will frustrate you. I was told by someone to "sing from the heart" and it worked. At least this is my story. Good luck everyone .ps. I agree that Phil is one of the best instructors on line.

Strengthening exercises for singing are one thing but so many are given exercises supposed to "enhance" singing. Then many trainees look for "magic" exercises to practice. The problem is that if your practice isn't correct then you ingrain the wrong message into your muscle memory and now learned very well how to do something wrong. So many students are taught little things to practice along with scales etc but, to me, practicing this alone...separate from the song...is kind of like practicing shooting baskets without a basketball in your hand. I'm not a teacher but imo there is way too much bad advice out there. Find a teacher that not only understands the voice but one who understands "your" voice.

This is what I just learned myself, after discovering by experimentation how programmable the voice is, and how much you have to maintain the muscles that respond to what you instruct it to do.

What I don't understand is about the narrowing of vowels- that's only one mode of singing, of four can think of. I'm not criticizing it, just curious why you prefer to sing in CVT Curbing as opposed to Overdrive or Edge. All three are equally healthy, and it's apparent that Curbing is the hardest one of the three to do because it requires the best balance of the falsetto and chest voice muscles- but why not Edge or Overdrive...Is it a stylistic thing?
@philmoufarrege7 жыл бұрын
I'm not familiar with CVT terminology so I can't answer why you think I prefer singing in some way or another. I will say though that it sounds like you are confused about singing in general. all of these "singing modes" are not things you have to "switch" in and out of, they are simply changes in compression and vowel - meaning if I sing louder and make my vowel taller that's a different "cvt mode" but I don't need to know that - in fact it's incredibly complex to me to think of things that way. I think of things far simpler, I control volume and width/height of vowel, that is enough to give endless colours to fit into different songs. you've been on my channel long enough to know that in my original songs and my covers I sing a wide range of different styles and genres from rock, to metal, to pop to rnb to soul - narrow to wide, smile, no smile, loud, medium, soft - everything. All these "modes" you're talking about are simply changes in compression and vowel, things that don't need to be given separate names. I also teach singers who come from a variety of different styles, so it's important that I understand the nuances of those styles. If you learn to sing both narrow and wide, loud and soft while staying connected to full voice then you can easily move in and out of these "modes" without even knowing you're doing it - all you have to do is sing different styles of music and learn what sounds are appropriate for the styles. Narrowing the vowels is an internal thing, you can sing wide yet still be narrowing. The narrowing occurs in the throat and prevents the sound from splatting because it helps get the larynx to tilt instead of jam up. It keeps the bridges balanced so you don't strain. If a singer can go through all their bridges in full voice then they can narrow. It's not limiting, it's freeing, it gives you more choices not less. All of these things are

God. I wish I could explain it that well to my teachers back in CVI in Copenhagen. The whole 'telling you to do it should grant you the ability to do it' philosophy is the cornerstone for their teaching. I wasted 12000 € in the singing program that gave me no results because they were making me yell the high C while the concept of open throat was forgein to me. Now I'm completely broke AND lost my voice while there are wonderful young teachers like you who share their knowledge for free or dirt cheap. Feel the level of frustration?

Hi Marcin, I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience. a good teacher is pretty rare in all disciplines. When I want to learn something and I'm looking for teachers, I pay less attention to WHAT their method is and focus more on whether they can actually TEACH or not. Once I find a rare gem who can truly teach, I say "take my money" and just do whatever they say. I'm doing that with a piano teacher and production teacher right now - as soon as I saw them I knew "these guys can teach" and just paid whatever I had to pay and I'm now making so much progress We get lots of people "teaching" but few of them are REALLY teachers. Anyone can throw instructions at you or "tell" you what to do but a real teacher is more of a listener - they listen and FEEL what you are doing and then take it from there. A good teacher often can communicate your own problems back to you better than you can articulate them yourself.
