Did you know that intelligence goes beyond just your IQ? Right within your mind, there is an even greater and more powerful level of intelligence just waiting for you to tap into. It’s known as ‘emotional intelligence’ and by mastering it, you can use it to better all areas of your life. On this episode of Conversations with Tom, psychologist and New York Times bestselling author Daniel Goleman, Ph. D, joins Tom Bilyeu to discuss such matters and more as they explore why it’s critical you become self-aware of your emotional intelligence and begin to develop it, all while pursuing your purpose and meaning in life. They discuss what emotional intelligence and emotional IQ is, how you can develop and strengthen it at any age, the power of practicing meditation regularly, how purpose and meaning is critical to leading a successful life, the common traits of successful leaders, why you need to have empathy, optimism, love and kindness, and so much more.

Meditation is a direct training of the mind in paying attention…” [17:39]
“Cognitive control is a stronger predictor of your adult life than your childhood IQ or the wealth of the family you grew up in.” [1:17:18]
“The first person who benefits from compassion is the one who feels it.” [1:34:29]

It’s incredible actually because it proves his emotional intelligence and maturity. If a conversation is focused on one individual it makes the relationship feel surface level. Asking people questions who ask you questions helps solidify trust and a bond with that person.

I was impressed by Daniel Goleman attitude. He really showed what empathy is during all the conversation till the point that he starts asking questions to Tom to show how he is interested in the other person! That's a great man and professional, even when Tom is a bit too impatient with his questioning something that could have disturbed more than one interviewee in a normal situation.

I thought the same thing. But I am glad Tom was interrupting. Goleman has a script, he repeats everytime (which you read in his book(s)). Tom was successful in getting him to go beyond his script. Goleman didn't seem to mind and I suspect was flattered how deep Tom has studied his books. Anyway, the interview gets better, and becomes a genuine conversation towards the middle. Legendary interview.

I admire your channel, and it would be a good interview if there weren’t so many interruptions. There’s a time and place to talk about what you want to say, but you’ve got this incredible human to interview and it’s jarring when I’m listening to his response and suddenly bam, it’s completely cut off. Let’s incorporate active listening 👂🏻

I spent all last year in solitude on purpose and meditated 3 to 4hrs a day. I did not feel lonely at all and felt very calm. At 41:00 I connected to this so much. I came out this year and a different person from having done that. My amygdala was very active due to trauma and now I don't feel anger very often - when I do it converts to compassion within a day.

Another fab interview . I discovered something I do when I can't sleep. I go mentally up and down all the streets in my neighborhood wishing each neighbor who I know " may John Doe be happy" and so on. I keep on until I have visited each house. I have been very happy lately even though in lockdown and do not see these people. Now I understand that there is probably a connection between my practice and my positive emotions.

Wonderful technique, if you continue this practice and accompany it with a small act of kindness a day like giving a needy some etc, you will transform yourself from scarce to abundance mentality, which actually will increase your wealth health and social status. But please treat them as side effects when they come and dont do it for sake of those worldly side effects ;-)

I'm studying Psychology myself and I'm also a Buddhist, I think the field of psychology could really benefit from more personal experience in deep meditation. The problem is I think most people in the field either do research on others or read research written by someone else, but the more advanced states of meditation can't be understood from a textbook. Maybe more research into the arera would encourage more psychologists/behavioural scientists to try it themselves.

Omg!! When the discussion about the o overweight kid and the "so called cool kids".I broke out into tears.I am so emotional and so empathic .I have such a "doomsday" feeling on civilization and where this world is going. So when I hear stories or see situations that have a positive outlook,or compassion,or some kind of defending of the person or situation ,...it totally instills a positive and a faith in humanity.I love your program. You have an incredible sense of what matters to people or what WOULD POSSIBLY INSTILL THE GOOD AND POSITIVE in human beings. This particular program was most inspiring and made for a very positive outlook in my life today.Homeless for the first time,an every day maintenance drug and alcohol user, house burning down then husband leaving and wanting to die.Im in temporary housing, have a 25 yr old son who has suffered throughout his own life(is sleeping on his bosses couch) and a mum over 70 who I used to treat so badly but in the last 10-15 years I have changed that and love her more than I could say in words.A musical,American,Jewish, musical genius step father who also has assburgers, who I love dearly. I feel I have so much to say to people.Maybe that's my ego, regardless, thank you for the start of my day today.

Honestly Oprah does the same thing, but I realized that when you are the one who is steering the conversation, sometimes interrupting isn’t to be rude, but to keep the guest on the subject and that they don’t veer off. Also, I find myself preparing to receive the answer he asked of his guest and sometimes they misunderstand the questions; so he asks them to answer exactly what his listeners want to hear. I hope this helps! 😋

Jottings: - Theme: Being EQ (Emotional Intelligence) smart - EQ: being smart about emotions - Self Awareness (knowing feelings, cognitive control) - Self Management (put positives forth) - Empathy - Social skills, relationships - EQ more important than IQ for growth-success. - EQ is learn-able, so teach in school, better before age 20. - Any Meditation works, makes calmer, focuses attention. - Meditation shifts from Sympathetic (flight or fight, amygdala) to para-sympathetic (calm, pre-frontal cortex) - Social brain: links to brains of others. Invisible influence just by presence. - Emotional control: Have ability to take down anyone, but don't do it. - Finding inner drive/purpose: by accident, self-awareness, evaluating choices - Successful entrepreneurs: growth mindset, visualization, get performance feedback, risk after homework, grit, help others (empathy)

Tom! We watch you and subscribe because we like you. You need to change your medication and stop interrupting your guests. We totally wanted this guy to finish his sentences once in awhile. Meditate and listen, Quietly. Ask your questions privately. The guy is answering all of our questions, if you will just let him.

wow cool, so cool to see this. I studied EQ back in 2004. I made a basic psychometric test around this for my uni dissertation. It's become the foundation of my understanding of personal development and human behaviour. To paraphrase, Emotional intelligence is the ability to monitor your own and other peoples feelings and emotions and then being able to use those feelings and emotions to pursue and attain goals. Feeling grateful I came across this back then as it set a very good foundation for me. So defiantly look into it and learn about it. 🙏🏻

I think your work combined with your style is indeed unique as hell and helping plus giving me soo (soo) much. I love the hope, the wisdom, the skills and the joy combined with meaning with is definitely a big one in your talks. Even if we have and probably never will talk, since i am in a full blown different state/age group/background etc. you feel like a friend to me. Thank you very much for everything you have done and are still doing, Tom! I wish you and your wife may be friends for a really long time to go.

And most importantly I'm proud to say I'm Indian and I dont have to go out and spent money to learn mantras because I definitely alot of it. I wish I could get in touch with you Tom and be able to share my experience about it. As I dont care to share it in public but definitely I'm grateful for every bit of experience.

Always interesting to hear Mr. Goldman & he has in-depth knowledge on “emotional intelligence” subject matter. Its kind upsetting interviewer kept interrupting & not allowing him to explain. This means it’s annoying when we are listening carefully what scientist is saying & cuts off! Either I need to mute interviewer or I quit listening while session. I gave up in mid of this talk session coz it annoys me more than “pleasant feeling” as per topic I have expected. David I will hear your some other platform. Thanks.
