This was a great pick me up in the morning! I had the pleasure of meeting Bobby Chiu and talking to him for a little while- he's 100% the genuine, positive, fantastic human being that he appears to be... and he even gave me a sketch!

As a younger artist myself (18), I have noticed that a lot of young artists try to solidify their artistic style while they're still in high school. I think this is far too young to develop an art style. At this age, you should focus on learning more about drawing anatomy and improving while you still know you have plenty of time to do so. This is not to say that you cannot study your own style and more variances of it that you could create, but do not try to solidify it this young. Of course, I am still a young artist myself, so don't heed my advice as if I were a professional, but I just feel that 18 or younger is too young to solidify your style unless you were a gifted child with talent years beyond most people your age. I have seen an artist who is a year younger than me, but looks a decade ahead of me in skill and I would say that she is skilled enough to develop a style, but most of us this young should be focusing on getting more skilled instead.

You speak the truth. I'm 20 and I never really focused on a style. but never put as much effort in fundamentals in such, being stressed and distracted all of the time. It's about that time to do so. :)

I'm 36 now (so ooold!) but yeah, I have never even tried to develop my "own style", not even when I was younger because to me, everyone has a style of their own already. You just don't see it because you're too focused on "getting a style". I have a style, of course. But it's not because I tried to get one. It's just me. It's how I draw, how I apply shadows and highlights, what I like to portrait, the colours I use, the way the brush strokes look on the canvas. So you're right, just concentrate on learning and getting better, and the style will come by itself.

eh I think it depends, rafael was 20 when he produced his own style, just because your's take longer doesn't mean others don't have a much more clear idea to their style

Interesting, and very true, a person's work is a reflection of themselves. A style is like a soul.

I love this talk so much ! I also like how you mentioned it comes with learning. I took a very long bitter break from art for a while after dropping out of college. I started again from a different place. It’s really strange because I have this desire to just learn as much as I can and watch as many people I can talk about art technique what they do. I am hoping to find a “style” which previously I didn’t think was important. In college they told me to throw style out the window (which I think in college is important because I think they were trying to teach us to go learn from artists. ) there is something about the desire to learn that I have now that is indescribable. I almost just have to do art all the time like an addiction. Where as before I knew I could just draw really well. There is so so so much more that goes into a solid piece of art. It’s magical and well worth dissecting just to get the feeling. I didn’t really think about me putting me in paintings and things. , I recently made this little cartoon cat I just love. I didn’t realize why. But she is in a little terribly made unicorn costume and she’s super happy to wear it because she made it. Lol I feel like I do that all the time ! I work super hard on something. Harder than anyone else and it will be aweful or a mess. But I will follow through. Sorry about the long comment this just sparked soo so so much thought for me.

I'm not an artist nor do I have much experience in drawing; however, on the rare occasion, I do feel like if I wanted to draw something from the heart, it would be something so terrifying for me to even bear looking at (I hate scary movies). But after watching this video, I feel encouraged to just go for it. To stop keeping myself from doing what I should try. I want to see what I will actually draw from the heart.

I'm interested in schoolism but it seems that it is geared towards digital art. It's something that I suppose I'll need to learn eventually but I really want to stay traditional. Will those lessons translate from digital to traditional?
