5 tips to boost your career

I thought I'd share 5 tips that have helped to boost my career over the years and achieve many of my goals so far. Lots of people have different ways to boost their careers so these aren't the only ways but they've worked for me and I hope they'll help some others out there as well.

I also wanna mention to boost your career PLEASE take care of your health. physical and mental. don't work yourself into burnout and sickness like I did, please take breaks, please make doctor's appointments, stay on top of your health as best you can. it's hard to feel creative and draw awesome stuff when your body's not doing too great.

I don't know how many realize the great pieces of advice Bobby shares in this channel, but these must be among the greatest ever. "Think Big" certainly hits close to home. Don't ever think your wildest dreams are too outrageous to achieve, even if you have no idea on how to get to them - or rather, start advancing in little goals that you feel will get you there eventually. I also admit artists are not the most sociable folk but as in most things in life, it's not always about what you know but who you know (and those who, in turn, know you and can refer you). I know I've always have had some drawing handicaps - specially in human anatomy. I'm taking some good courses to overcome that. Overall, nailing it as usual. Cheers.

I've been watching these numbered lists for quite a while and learning a lot. I don't know why but for some reason I just had an idea while watching the first minute of this one. Bobby, have you considered maybe some day making a children's book with these little guys? You always include little nuggets of wisdom with videos including them. I could see them being adorable stuffed animals to go along with mini versions of the book(s) for younger kids. Just a thought. About the video, numbers 1 and 4 have been the hardest for me. I remember one of the streams when Stephen Silver talked about the Dunning Kruger Effect and I think I'm in that stage of sloping downhill because the more I struggle to learn concepts and enhance my skills, the more it feels like the distance increases between where I am and where I want to be. I know it's still a journey but there are milestones I want to reach. I've lost some confidence along the way which in turn discourages me from networking or trying to make those connections because I feel like it takes a certain kind of arrogance for someone like me to try. **sighs** Nevertheless, I appreciate that these videos encourage me to think about the subject matter. These, with the stream recordings being a close second, are my favorite videos on your channel.

This is such awesome advice! My last job was actually recommended to me by a professor of mine and the folks I worked with and myself were a perfect fit for each other - they gave me so much field work experience as I helped them with the environmental education aspect of things. Your thoughts on working jobs towards your final goal is so true in the environmental field too. To gain significant field work experience, you have to trudge through a lot of seasonal and low-paying jobs that involve a lot of hard manual labor and harsh environmental conditions. Only then can you work your way up to cooler stuff like leading projects or getting office time to analyze data. In the beginning, everyone thought I was nuts for taking lower paying jobs that were exactly in the realm of what I ultimately wanted to do. Those jobs gave me amazing opportunities to expand my knowledge and learn new skills. I try to find something everyday in the work that I do to improve myself, either at work or at home. I'm so happy you concur in this way of thinking - it's tough at times but has always paid off in the end :) Thanks for the great video!

Just try not to be too hard on yourself, and don't stop improving. There will always be artists that you'll think are FAR better than you BUT, instead of being too negative about your art, learn what you can from them, create YOUR own path. Your artwork needs YOU to love it, first of all. Doesn't matter if it's not perfect as you have it in your mind, you will improve if you believe in yourself.

I am introvert but when i realized that just made me loose lots of chances to work in what i wanted, or even talk with people I wanted to know, now i'm still introverted because that's why I am but i always push myself to try to know more people, and I've made introverted friends like me hahaha thanks! you push myself to be better!

I feels like crying, I'm literally working at retails for the sake of helping my family because I'm the eldest and I'm supposed to helped my family since dad dump all his responsibility on me and my mum. Right now I'm just concentrating on collecting enough saving just so I could actually go to online art class because gdi I cant afford the actual class. I do those things that you said. I am actively learning in between break I keep taking note about stuff I should improve on and learn. I keep many many sketches I did in literally 10-20 mins during my break working as a retails worker. . If I'm not tired enough I will continue my study afterwork and go to sleep, wake up and go to work and repeat. It's never ending cycle for me. I hate working for retails even when the working environment is good. I hate I dont have the opportnity or even the luxury of time and youth and not be able to penetrate into the art industry while my friends make it through. I know so many people who make it through and I am still at the slump. I dont improve my situation of anything. . I'm sorry for dumping all this rants. I do went to cons and meet people. but one thing I cant do from the lists of this is think better of myself and or even getting a career. honestly at one point I tell myself I have no future.

just find people who are interested in the same stuff as you are. i am pretty introverted and i think it is because i do not feel a connection to most people and thats why i doubt myself of being different and not getting that direct acception from everyone. but you know what- being different is the best thing ever. and once you embrace it, it will be amazing.

Hello, thanks for those very usefull videos :) I would like an advice, I'm at a position where I don't have much money so attend to classes or lessons is difficult because I can't afford it and for now I don't have the level to do the jobs I want to do. So do I still need to be picky about the job I want? Bobby can I ask what software you use to draw? It doesn't look like Illustrator as I remember it, but it looks like it works a bit like Flash. I used Flash many years ago and realised how much faster it was for intuitive drawing and how it kept the process "fun". I haven't touched Illustrator for a few years so I don't know if they improved the drawing tools.

I'm quite shy and I find it difficult to make friends. I put a lot of hard work into my art but I feel like others will always get the job over me. Not because their art is better but because they are more likable than me. It feel's like everything in life is a popularity contest and people who are shy and introverted like me will get left behind and ignored. I hope I'm able to make some friends and connections as I start getting work but the thought of trying to do that is nerve wracking. I'm just not good at it.

Ooooh man, I definitely hear ya. I'm extremely introverted myself. Like to the point that I would (and sometimes still do...) completely avoid some people I knew/know in public just to avoid interaction. I found, though, the most helpful thing for me was to always remind myself to be "INTERESTED", not "interesting". This completely changes the mindset of being very inward and worrying about how *you* are doing in the interaction and instead (eventually) relieves some pressure off of you. It comes down to putting time into it, just as you have put in time with your artwork. Remember, at one point, you weren't very good at that! Yet, here you are. And you didn't wait until you started to get work in order to get better at your art. It kind of falls in line with what Bobby said in the video: don't make connections or friends just to make connections or friends. That's a self-defeating approach. Follow your curiosity that you innately have as an artist. Be curious as to how someone is doing today. That being said, now I must reread what I typed and remind myself of the very same things.... Hope you follow your curiosity and make some great connections and true friendships with others very soon!

Perhaps start with some low risk opportunities for socialization and practice projecting confidence. Tell people about who you are with gusto. I recommend finding a get together in your area that you can pop in and out of (lots of great sites out there for that like Meetup). Being "charming" can be a learned skill like any other. Maybe it sounds silly, but make a list of the qualities you think make a person like-able (or the qualities in the people you find the most like-able) and practice emulating them in those low-risk social events.

Lily Hosegood I don't think it's always a popularity contest. I think introverted people need to realize that no one can read your mind or get to know you if you DON'T speak up and step forward. Remember if you speak up and step forward, you are in control. Sitting in the sidelines means everyone else around you are calling and taking the shots leaving you with little control of your outcome. I say this as an introvert myself (INFJ) and extremely emotionally person. *Lengthy personal story below* 4 months ago... I was desperate for a new job. I flung my resume at any opportunity. Then out of no where I get a call about a local art show looking for artists , and I researched it was legitimate. Years ago, I never would have said yes. That same week I got a call back for an interview. Next thing I know, I decided to take both opportunities. I had my first art show which was so much fun and a new job that I love. It's no dream job and hardly artsy, but the people and atmosphere were 10x less stressful. What does that mean? I still have energy when I come home to work on art :) and to prepare for the next art show!! If I had let my fear and indecisiveness hold me back, I'd missed both loved-experiences. "Making connections"... I've noticed lots of my "connections" are other artists who wouldn't help because competition is crazy and they don't want to turn clients on to other artists or else they're former clients who don't really want me to succeed because they wouldn't be able to afford my services if I were in higher demand (why send me to other clients when they can keep me at starving-artist prices?). It seems like the only people willing to help are people who have no skin in the game. Unfortunately, people with no skin in the game seem to not be in the game at all and have no connections to which they might refer me.

Bobby, why industry artists use Instagram? It's not meant to be an art gallery and I think it does a horrible job at it. It seems to make no sense to me.

Everything you said is correct, but they use it for exposure, so many people use instagram that why would you not use it to advertise yourself. - Most artists will use something like deviantart as well.

Storm Engineer it's the easiest way to get exposure. You attract people of every background, not just other artists who are competing for the same exposure like on DeviantArt or Art Amino.
