Jimmy Cage and Deniz the Buddymeister review DEVI / THE GODDESS
India 1960
Directed by Satyajit Ray
Starring Soumitra Chatterjee, Sharmila Tagore and Chhabi Biswas
Intro/Outro Music © Deniz the Buddymeister

In German we’d say:
DEVI zeigt auf sensible, anmutige und schockierende Art und Weise zu was Fanatismus und Aberglaube führen können. Ein poetisches und sehr bewegendes Werk.
#Devi #SatyajitRay

After seeing Devi ,I was really curious about the literary source it was inspired from and since it was a short story i decided to give it a try, while the movie was faithful to most of the part , the part where doya and uma try to escape and the ending has been changed a lot , and i am in support to these changes because this movie is a poem starting from first frame and staying almost true to literary source would make it lose it s poetic nature .The original source had the couple getting separated since doya dint agree to runaway with uma to calcutta and the ending was very tragic having doya committing suicide. This was too prose to fit into poem and ray beautifully changed this minute changes to make it feel poetic. Speaking about the other aspects , omg i never loved classical music being used as background score in ray movies always he s knack of using it made me awe! Subrata mitra Dulal datta added more magic to this poem and actually if you pause any frame during the movie it looks like a painting actually.I have one question for you and your buddy,The ending actually had doya running away in something like a paradise filled with flower(indicating that she s finally attained her freedom from patriachal bengal society and supersition and is on the path which never ends ) a poetic way of ending .But reading literally source i am getting confused that did doya commit suicide and she s walking in some heaven?

Thank you so much for your in-depth comment :) Regarding your question... that's hard to tell, because it has been quite a while since we saw the movie. ':D But in general I like ambiguous endings that leave room for interpretation.

Have you seen any of the Durga Puja celebration videos from Calcutta? The faces of the idol look very much like that of Sharmila. As a kid even before I knew of Debi I called her Poter Thakur, that's the certain design of how they make the goddess look. That's the look on the poster. I'll tell you to watch Mr and Mrs Iyer again. Or Ganadevta.

Certain aspects of that film is still relevant to this date..... and u get to see spectacular performance by Dhritiman as the protagonist.......I wish he could do more such bold roles in his youth......

@@TheJimmyCage I would suggest 'Jana Aranya' (The Middleman) alongside 'Pratidwandi' (The Adversary).... According to me, 'Jana Aranya' is his greatest Magnum Opus

An outstanding film after the rather unsatisfactory Aranyer din Ratri. The dream-vision scene is such an atmospheric achievement. Scary almost. And yes, such a tragic ending.

This story was in my high-school literature book and it made me really really sad. And society just remodeled itself with all these things. Nothing is changed actually. The psychological aspect of the story is really universal and timeless. And yet again a great review guys. Indeed the cultural aspect is very heavy for you guys.. (And is this a shoutout for Sharmila Tagore?? Because today is her 77th birthday 😅)

Aura ring from plates😆.. Intro in another level... Haven't watched it, so nothing to say about the movie, but the concept is used brilliantly in" I Origins" with the climax hit your head from the behind..!! And ofcourse reincarnation claims are widely seen in television from direct experience and stories of another people especially in shows like The Oprah Winfrey show..

Brother, Jimmy I've requested you many times before that you should watch Mrinal Sen. Start with Interview then watch Kolkata 71. Mrinal Sen is one of three Emperors of Indian Cinema along with Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak. I wish this time you would keep my request. Thank you, and I hope you are all right. Take care and love from Kolkata.

@@TheJimmyCage Interview and Kolkata,71 is far better than Ek Din Achanak. You can trust me. Ek din Achanak is surely another satisfactory film by Sen. But 'Bhubon Shome' 'Padatik', these are another masterpieces by Mrinal Sen.

This movie, P.K., OMG...and many... This types of movie has clear understanding that India can show movie on any topic including religion " a sensitive one" precisely on Hinduism Of course There are extremists,.everywhere. But the movies should be made on such.... Success of P.K. in india shows that People in India now gone towards more soft approach, relatively in Hinduism. It should be there.. But Yes extremists are everywhere.... Offtopic comment may be..
