Feels bad , only handful of people may have seen this master piece. Glad you watched it. Ray is not only about Pather Panchali and Apu Trilogy. More you see him, more you be awestruck.

Please watch 'Nayak' by Satyajit Ray. You'll be introduced to Uttam Kumar, the greatest bengali actor of all time. That movie was tailor-made for him by Ray, portraying his journey to become a hero from a realistic pov. Two stalwarts of bengali cinema on either side of the lens...

I found your channel only recently, but have since tried not to miss your reviews of Indian, especially Bengali, movies. The empathy with which you penetrate into the very heart of a culture so different from yours is almost uncanny. I am sure this has helped at least some Indians to acquire a deeper appreciation of their own cinema. I am not sure if you have reviewed Rittik Ghatak's 'Subarnarekha'. If you haven't, it's this one film of his that you just can't miss.

Thank you so much :) Reading a comment like yours really makes us happy and motivates us to keep going. We haven't watched Subarnarekha yet but it's on our list... unfortunately the versions available are all of supbar quality. :/

Perhaps you have checked this print of 'Subarnarekha': kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoLcnp9rq9app9E ? It's without subtitles, but one of the two subtitles available (the one that doesn't mention frame rate) at opensubtitles.org seems to synchronise, although I haven't checked all through. And of course you must be aware by now that the quality of subtitles of even classic Bengali movies can be quite pathetic.

Simply put, Ray was a master filmmaker. Unmatched. If you need confirmation, take the word of Martin Scorsese, Jean Luc Godard, Truffaut, Bergman and so many others who revered him. Using the specific elements of cinema - space, time; sound and vision, including certain ones unique to film - montage and closeup - he could birth a flawless work that would be visually stunning and emotionally overwhelming. He was a technical virtuoso, yet almost unnoticeably so; which is to say never self consciously or superfluously. The technique he deployed was never for its own sake. It harmonized, fused ideally with the whole of his artistic intent. Ray's immense power is not only in the pitch perfect performances, astounding as they are, but also in the way he draws our attention to the the most articulate of details: Madhabi Mukherjee's delicate fingers; her terrifyingly beautiful eyes; the pair of sassy cool sunglasses she wears outdoors in a later segment (which mask those heavenly eyes - and her emotions); the sight and sound of rain in Soumitra Chatterjee's poor studio that presages their breakup. While I greatly admire the major works of Ray's oeuvre - Apu, Charulata, Music Room, Home and the World - this rather short work embodies a certain perfection for which I can only agree with the 10/10 rating. So often a film adapted from a play to the screen leaves one cold and unfulfilled; because the cineaste has relied too much, or solely, on verbal/literary flourishes and the actors' talents. Ray knew how to weave together the brilliant performances he evoked into much richer tapestries, rendering them ever more captivating with visual jewels - gentle zooms; carefully chosen angles and backdrops; deep focus; and some of the most exquisitely composed frames ever shot. These gems serve as accents, deployed at perfect intervals, that make the emotion suffuse us more completely and unforgettably. This is what great cinema should - must - do.

@@debjyotimandal4927 The general plot maybe, but I am talking about the specific things that are funny within a specific cultural context. For example, the Shakespearean stories adapted in Japanese or in Hindi ARE plot-wise the same as the original, but the adaptations are very definitely Japanese and Indian in how the same story plays out in different beats.

Thank you for bringing this up. Ray was such a kind of director who created marvels out of very short in budget. There was fund crunch in many of his movies but the exceptional quality and attention to detail are unparalleled. I am a proud Bengali holding his legacy in my heart. Furthermore these kind of casting and actors are irreplaceable. These movies portray only true acting and direction and no special effects… It reflects the cultural heritage and legendary brilliance. Excellent review Jimmy and Buddy ❤️ It's a solid 9.5/10 film for me. 5 Bengali legends ( the 3 actors e.g *Soumitra Chatterjee, Madhabi Mukherjee* and *Haradhan Banerjee* , the director *Satyajit Ray* and the writer of the original story *Premendra Mitra* ) created this masterpiece. Edit:- Guys please start exploring some new/recent Bengali films. Even in 2020, 3-4 really good Bengali films released on OTTs and in the theatres. Current generation of Bengali filmmakers are also highly talented and they're creating amazing films even though they're working with very low budget. And please explore some *Rituparno Ghosh* films. After the era of the 3 legends of *"Satyajit Ray-Ritwik Ghatak-Mrinal Sen"* who ruled Indian parallel cinema for decades the next best Bengali filmmaker we got and lost prematurely (died at the age of 50) was *Rituparno Ghosh* He won multiple National Awards and big Bollywood actors used to wait eagerly to work in his films. *Amitabh Bachchan* used to love him. *Irrfan Khan* wanted to work with him but sadly it didn't happen. Watch *Rituparno Ghosh* directed films like, 1) Chokher Bali 2) Utsab 3) The Last Lear (English) 4) Titli 5) Abohomaan 6) Noukadubi 7) Chitrangada 8) Bariwali 9) Dosar 10) Raincoat (Hindi) You'll realise his calibre after watching these films.

Agree. I just love Rituparno Ghosh's films. I want to add "khela". I feel it's a very underrated film. Chokher Bali(a passion play) is a masterpiece. Noukodubi is also very beautiful. Chitrangada is rituda's best work.

@@TheJimmyCage no you didn't understand my question. In the end, Koruna did come to the station. her intention cud is either she wanted to see Amitabh grew some courage to take her now,( that he mentioned to her that morning when her husband was sleeping) or he is still the coward. So when she came to the station even though Amitabh smiles at first he was showing scared/sad emotion just right after the smiling. That cud means two things. From karuna's face, he understood she just came but will not go with him or he is still "the coward". I wanted to know what ur thought about that? now after that Karuna started asking abt the medicine. that might be the cover-up for her being stood up and got insulted again by Amitabh, or she really came for the medicine.

Really nice to see you re-look at several of Ray's films and discussing them. One issue I see with your treatment of such films is the casual, fun-framed platform you bring them to right at the beginning. You begin in a jocular fashion which is very, very jarring. Well, to be more direct, one doesn't talk about Bergman, Fellini, Kurosawa or Ray quite in this vein. They deserve a certain respect even in being mentioned. Second, do you really, really have to talk so fast? It is not necessary, you know, you are NOT in a talk show. Why not allow a breath of two so that what you are saying SINKS IN? Learn a little bit from the way veteran critics speak about the classics, or when one film-maker speaks of another film-maker (umpteen videos available on KZbin). Great films deserve 'A Certain Regard' (quoting the name given to a widely respected Section of the Cannes Film Festival).
