The sad state of DeviantART, Instagram, and Twitter really bums me out and is bitter sweet imho. Twitter despite being a toxic cesspool full of people who won’t shut up and scream the loudest online was once a great place to promote artwork, small businesses, and journalism. But, now thanks to Elon, it’s become this toxic hell gate full of people buying validation for 8$/month (Despite Elon making claims he’s a free speech absolutist only to try as hard as he can to censor people) and where people go back and fourth arguing about politics and getting involved in culture wars. Instagram is a hollow husk of itself due to Mark Zuckerberg and Adam Messori’s thick skull. He doubled down on Reels and the horrible changes to the platform despite a ton of back lash from Kylie Jenner’s fanbase and the community. And not the platform is even worse than before because Facebook decided to copy Elon’s homework and started putting basic features behind a paywall. The sad state of Social Media is really concerning. It’s almost Dystopian.

This is all so disappointing to hear. I created a new DA account a couple weeks ago and I was honestly having a more positive opinion about the site than I did when Eclipse came out. With Twitter now asking artists to purchase the blue checkmark to even have A CHANCE to be seen by others, DA was looking like a better place for artists to get noticed, and my art was in fact getting more attention there. But the Wix team just HAVE to keep making these absolutely stupid decisions that make people avoid and leave their platform. I swear we desperately need a brand new website that works just like the good old Deviantart, because every popular website now looks like it's conspiring against artists.

I think it's important to note that the "NFT protect" feature also has the ability to connect an NFT to the image on DA, meaning they are playing both sides. I think it's less in place to protect artists from NFT's and more there to make it so artists can connect their art to an NFT to show it's validity as an NFT. Though I know no artists that actually support NFT's... They follow every trend, try to put a paywall on everything and pretend it's great for the community etc and I am glad people are calling it out. Hope more people help Inkblot out, so it can become the new, proper art website and that many abandon DA.

the problem is for some of us, we only get picked up on dA's algorithm and nowhere else. I have always, and still continue to, get basically zero (and often times, literally zero) traffic anywhere EXCEPT dA. So telling people to leave isn't the most helpful, it's not that we're putting all our eggs in one basket, but dA is the only basket that ever gets any eggs in it. I think the most optimal solution for people like me who only get any attention on dA, is to just refuse to give them any money. Do not buy Core. Do not use their marketplace ever. @@hrpdrp97 Since I'm a furry artist there's Furaffinity, Inkbunny, Weasly, Sofurry, Furry Network, and probably a couple other ones I don't know about yet. Heck posting to e621 is better than DA because they actually do crack down on AI art, though a lot of people are dicks on that site. I'm sure there are many other sites for other artist's niches and I'm sure there will be more that pop up after DA and other sites lose there relevancy. There is also Twitter and Pixiv which allow AI art, but my feed isn't completely full of it, and I can more easily ignore accounts that post AI art. With DA the main page when entering the site is almost always 90% AI art for me. I'm lucky to actually see art from people I follow on the front page these days. I already had issues with their site redesign a couple years back making it harder to find art from people I follow, and the AI art boom just made things worse. If anything I'd just tell any artist to post to as many sites as they can, even DA, because you never know where you might find your fanbase and the more you expose you art the better off you'll be as an artist.

How does selling AI generate characters work? Does anybody know? I know that AI generated images can't be copyrighted, but what about the characters? Are they really fit for a market? Also it's really incredible that a platform filled with artists ignores the artists' needs and preferences so blatantly. And it's "funny" how the adoptables market overflowed with AI is the perfect representation of what can happen and is happening for many art jobs and activities, and yet some people say that artists should not worry about AI. (The previous text was a general comment, but also I wanted to add, thanks Ceelstia for this informative video, it is not only an update but also makes people aware of how things are going and maybe it can help a bit improving the situation, I hope)
@GhostKibble
@GhostKibble Жыл бұрын
From someone who has accidentally bought an AI adopt I might be able to answer some of those, it seems like to some extent, if you pay some AI companies enough through like a subscription, you can "copyright" images and they cannot be duplicated and are forever unique, but I'm unsure how much of that is true, how much is allowed to be exclusive to a single piece, and what "AI Artists" aka Quick Money Grabbers want the person using their program to think. So, many AI 'artists' are probably not even educated enough to understand how scummy the entire thing is. (To put it simply, I was not aware what an AI adopt was until they told me after buying to credit the ToyHouse account to MidJourney and then I saw all the small details that just weren't... right. So then did some research to learn about WTF AI adoptables even are because I thought MidJourney was just some whatever new art program before buying. Im totally out of the DA / Art loop.) It would certainly be questionable at best though, because seeing so many of them posting identical prompts and selling almost the same things, it makes me wonder about their fit in any market as well. In my opinion after living and learning and most importantly researching, you CAN own the characters, because they themselves are unique and are bits and pieces and code made into a visual photo that hasn't been made before, less or more depending on the AI program you use, but you indeed cannot claim that initial 'art piece' as your own by any means. And because of that.. well, what's the point? I would say less to the people who knowingly buy it, "can you?'' and more "why would you?"
@iamaylacat3935
@iamaylacat3935 Жыл бұрын
@@GhostKibble As far as copyright law is concerned, the image is not protected and anyone can take a copy of it if they have access to it to use for whatever purpose they please. However, as for the AI side of ensuring it stays 'unique' they can only really garuntee that in terms of the AI not generating a perfect match to it. A precedent for this has already been set in many countries around the world. When it applies to characters, its a little more of a grey area. You own all copyright to the images you make, but to my knowledge unless you make a substantial edit to the character as an actual person, the character itself has no protection. This is because in order for something to be copyrightable, there needs to be substantial human input (prompts don't count!) in the process. A rough concept generated by an AI and then iterated upon a few times before being finalised would be copyrightable, a full character design straight out of the machine would not. Regardless of where you stand on the morality of AI generated images, I need to make one thing clear. What happened to you is against the ToS of EVERY Ai image generator out there. As per the ToS, every repost of AI generated images is required to include a statement that the image was generated using AI. Because of this, if you do upload the character to Toyhouse, you will have to credit MidJourney for the image, however to my knowledge if you were to redraw the character manually and upload it this requirement does not apply.

@@JMulvy Yeah, the biggest issue by far with AI image generators is the amount of work that they have that has a special license on it that dictates that credit is required in any and all usage of the work, and yet they don't give credit for it in their systems. Still think it should be enforced though, at least in regards to the copyright rulings regarding AI art and selling/buying images/characters.

They bring back Ads. Consider the lawsuit on DreamUp. And the Adoptable news doesn't help the case. 8:32 Love your avatar portrait here. I doubt the huge amount of Ai art in Adoptable will shut down the idea but as DA is a firm supporter of it. Adoptables can survive without this Eclipse feature.

As somebody who participates in the adoptable community on DA myself, it's honestly utterly disgusting I wouldn't even use the base feature if it was free and didn't take any of the profit, my favorite part is interacting with buyers and making friendships through that. I love seeing the stories people make with my silly little designs, I don't even know if I'd know who bought the design in the first place.

I'm debating leaving DeviantArt all together. It was so much better when I first discovered it back in 2013, but I feel like it's lost all the heart it had. Wix has completely destroyed what it once was and made it a place that fosters more negativity, AI, NFTs, and art theft. I miss the love that was put into the original website.

As a core member, I can confirm Devianart is super bullshit when it comes to perks and they're not that great in some areas, I don't have the highest tear but I did noticed that my art does get recommended to other people more often than when I didn't have this. OH let's also bring how they nuked the "recently posted art" tab I even forgot the actual name of it, You know how many artists old and new and underapreciated you could find. That one infuriate me the most, even more than AI art, that's just blatant murdering everyone who isn't good enough or spammy enough! I am surprised there are even people here, this is why I like newgrounds more, though they do need some modifications because they're severely lacking some features despite being so old, I rather have the rating system, although harsh I much rather having that and also having a platform that actually supports artists than not.

I'm expecting Wix itself to start getting heat, soon. At the least for taking all the personality out of iconic websites and making them all the same, generic, disappointments, if not for their shady business practices. DA Prime was iconic. Now it's a glossy, soulless mess and the same thing happened to IMDB. Wix may pretend they're a friend to the small business but I'm not so sure about that.

Inkblot's pretty good; made by artists, updated frequently, has a strict "No NFTs/AI" rule, has pretty good NSFW rules (things including minors, real or not, is forbidden thank fuck), and has pretty good customization. There's also pillowfort, which is still being worked on but is slowly becoming a good replacement for Twitter and tumblr.

Well the USCO has news for them... officially, AI generated art can not be copy written and prompt crafting is not enough to qualify as human authorship. Which means I can right-click download any AI deviation and post it as my own, or use it in my art, then apply for a copyright on it myself and if they have a problem with it, I have legal recourse. They don't.

It is a mess too, because what I want to do isn't 'accept an offer' for my fanart adoptable I made, but get someone to deliver on showing proof of use in an actual story. (Which lies somewhere beyond picking something up and showing people how 'cool' their adoptable is without doing anything but hang it on a wall or resell it.) This 'feature' doesn't really help me at all. I don't need handholding [all the time in every way]. I kinda need people to take my two figurative cents and usually only *after* they do should they give me handholding. And they aren't. I hope DeviantART comes out of the closet and just admits that they want to be a pay-to-use service, because to be fair, it would remove a lot of headaches for me as a person who uses the platform for free.

DA having some egregious fee for selling through (rather than simply on) their platform isn't anything new, so that it would extend to something like this isn't surprising. i don't think artist will be replaced, they will just become more invisible and be able to say "fuck this shit, fuck commissions, i didn't earn much money anyways", and tey will become more happy, because they won't own shit to anyone a make art for the sake of why not, even tough they might not be actually replaced (even ChatGPT says so), because the AI Art is not an AI, its an alogorithm, and because of emotional and sentimental value of art, only a human can represent emotions via request, this storm will pass, always continue to make art if you like, always do your best even if your best sucks, love your art regardless, is not always about the money (don't start a war in the comments, just fair play and pls tell me if im wrong, keep on drawing, stay safe an hydrated)

the problem about the money, is that artists were happy because they were living making what made them happy, and now they need to find another job, a souless boring and repetitive job, because ironically the machines wanna replace only the funny and happy jobs, instead of the robotic and mentally unhealthy ones...

@@Mente_Fugaz LONG TEXT AHEAD but, in a more happy aproache, you can make art without anyone disturbing you, the soulless job can be tought of as way to make money so you can spend it on art, a good schedule makes wonders, regardless of that, i truly believe that artists will never be replaced, think of the Ai a an idea generator, the brute material, and then you ( the artist) makes it more appealing, you just have to see how much someone valuess something, a shirt that you boght for 20 bucks, made by a machine, you don't really care about that shirt, but if that shirt was made entirely by your mama, its gonna an enormous amount of value, what the Ai does is just a pretty picture that you will soon forget, why do you think we never forgot certain character ? Because they have a meaning (even if they give a meanig to art generated by an Ai its gonna sound like someone overexagerating something), because the way they are, the magic of story teling its gonna be something that Ai will NEVER take away from us (sure they might already took over the comminssions, but as a Great villain said, "if everyone is super then nobody is"), because the Ai serches patterns, a story has no pattern, it has cliches, thats why it will never taken away from us

Honestly, I'm not even a fan of the idea of removing the seller customer communication aspect from adoptables. Unless someone is being slow to pay, it really only takes a few minutes, it's not hard. I used to sell adopts a lot and I'd get a lot of excited and sweet messages from people who bought my designs and it really lifted me up and improved my mood. If it's automated that is lost, and it just feels like an overall negative to me.
