The United States entered the battlefields of Europe in 1918. Among the first Americans to participate in the fight are the U.S. Marines, who quickly adopt the names Devil Dogs. One of their most notable engagements is the Battle of Belleau Wood in June 1918, where the Marines fought the battle-hardened Germans for 26 days.

This episode is about the US Marines and their actions during the Battle of Belleau Wood in 1918. While most of the footage in this episode is depicting the marines and the Germans in 1918, and some of it is even depicting the actual fighting in Belleau wood, there is not a whole lot footage or imagery from the action. So for whoever is enough of a history buff to spot that some of our illustrative material is in fact depicting other engagements, well spotted! We try to use authentic material whenever we can, but in the end we have to make an episode visually attractive and dramatic, and we can't do that with just looking at Indy's head for 15 minutes (although I'm sure that many of you wouldn't mind). That was the announcement. Peace, rock on and cheers! If you would like to gain early access to our Sabaton History episodes and actively support this awesome project that we are so passionate about, you can do so by joining our Patreon community. A Wisconsin newspaper had an article on the "Devil Dog" nickname on April 27th, 1918. Some newspapers used this nickname as early as April 14th, 1918. So essentially, this song has a Wisconsin connection!

Marine here. We were told in a boot camp "history" lesson that we were given the name Devil Dog for a myriad of reasons, but my favorite was because the gas would cause us to foam at the mouth while we were hooking and jabbing with our bayonets, terrifying the German soldiers who thought we were literal demon dogs from hell.

Lavrentivs Why? Is anyone unaware that WW1 started before the Americans arrived? Also your context is unnecessary since the quote literally states “we just got here”. As in they recently arrived. Americans are trying to show respect and admiration for their past warriors and you’re making gratuitous points that everyone already knows. The point of the quote isn’t “hurr hurr Murica won WW1 by itself”. The point is “Hey the usmc are amazing fighters determined to fight and win and we admire that”.

Marine here, and great grandson of a WW1 Marine. I've been waiting for this since I saw the track list. I am not disappointed. "And, waking or sleeping, I can still see before me the dark threat of Belleau Wood, as full of menace as a tiger's foot, dangerous as a live wire, poisonous with gas, bristling with machine guns, alive with snipers, scornfully beckoning us to come on and be slain, waiting for us like a dragon in its den. Our brains told us to fear it, but our wills heard but one command, to clean it out, and I can still see before my very eyes those waves in the poppy-spattered wheat-field as the steady lines of our Marines went in." -Col Albertus Catlin, 6th Marine Regiment

Hey. I asked my dad (retired Marine) why they were called the devil dogs. He said it was a nickname the Germans gave them. But it wasn’t entirely about their furious battle tactics. It was actually a side product of all the officers and NCOs getting killed. Then new leaders would arise from the ranks. These new leaders didn’t know how to lead a charge or communicate so they actually turned to barking (whether barking orders or literal barking, it’s up to the Marine you ask. My dad portrays it as literal barking) to signal a charge. The Germans heard barking and were confused as you’d probably be when you hear dogs in the other trench. Then out of nowhere there would be a ton of Marines charging your position. Basically it was the barking then the furious attacks that led the Germans to nickname the Marines the devil dogs. Also these attacks became really scary for the Germans because they realized that America’s finest were charging them leading to terror through the ranks. I love you guys’ music and I love learning the history behind the events that inspired it!

The story I've heard and makes sense about the term devil dogs is how the Marines looked during a part of the battle. After the gas attack and the Marines were trying to take the hill, they had to climb often times scrambling on all fours. Couple that with gas masks and some drooling and foaming at the mouth from heat and it's a scary sight. What the germans saw charging them were crazy men climbing on all fours with long gas masks, drooling/foaming at the mouth and blood shot eyes and were reminded of the dogs from hell.

If my great grandfather were still alive he'd absolutely love this. He was career marine during WWII and Korea as well as being one of the nine officers that didn't have to go to 'Nam. He mostly worked in supplies and logistics so he never fired a shot in anger. Even so, He was on Saipan when those civilians jumped from the cliffs. He understandably never really talked about it.

Former devil dog here. Love these videos so much guys, keep it up. I really appreciate Sabaton keeping the memories of so many epic/valiant/amazing moments that I never would have heard of otherwise and keeping those memories alive. An another note, it is odd to hear us called the "U-S-A Marines". So used to "U-S Marines". Not an issue, it just stuck out in the lyrics to me.

My great grandfather was a marine during WWI, and he was involved in this battle, and even the main charge. He earned two Purple Hearts during the fighting. I’ve been waiting for you guys to do this song since I saw the track list for the album. The sneak peaks of this song guarantee that this will be my new favorite song.

As the son of a weapons company Sgt., 1st Marine Division, 3/5...1952-56 Korea , And his older brother (my Uncle) was a decorated Marine Corporal, Rifle company in South/Central Pacific of WW2, Ending at the Battle of Guam - I can assure you I was taught the entire history of the U.S. Marine Corps and I have No higher regard or more respect for a fighting force, like the USMC ! However, I have to recognize and respect the soldiers and fighting forces of Germany ! That country has turned out a Lot of Damn Good Warriors and Hard-Fighting Armies.

My father was a Marine and I remember when I first asked him were the name Devil Dogs came from. He sat my 6 year old butt down and told me the entire story. It’s something I’ve always loved about the Marines and that my father was a part of the Core. There are some of his best friends and those looked up to we both will never see again. And I hope even in the afterlife those glorious bastards are staying true to their name. Devil Dogs.

@@robertkalinic335 Shotguns are very environment specific weapons, and the cramped trenches of WW1 were about the best you could get with them. Our brains told us to fear it, but our wills heard but one command, to clean it out, and I can still see before my very eyes those waves in the poppy-spattered wheat-field as the steady lines of our Marines went in."-Col Albertus Catlin, 6th Marine Regiment
