18:45 There´s more to DMC3´s Devil Trigger than just attack and defense buffs as it also kinda incorporates the DT amulets from DMC2. The difference is that they are preselected for each weapon and you cannot change them. Like Cerberus has the Quick Heart allowing you to run faster than with any other weapon, Nevan has the Healing Heart, giving you faster heath regen as well as giving you Air Raid like the Areal Heart. Agni and Rudra has the Offence Heart, white Beowulf´s DT has higher defense. Rebellion gets a glide move for some reason.

Devil May Cry 3 is honestly still my favorite game in the Devil May Cry series. Devil May Cry 5 is an extremely close second for me but there is just something about this game that just hits so different. It perfected what it sought out to do with its gameplay, story and charachters and introduced one of the most iconic rivals of all time Vergil as well as saving the entire DMC series from ruin in spectacular fashion. Easily one of the best games ever in my opinion.

For me it's the most complete feeling dmc game. Platforming, "puzzles", on top of the combat. It just feels like a more complete campaign experience compared to dmc5. Also I think the 3 vergil fights in this game are better overall than the single dante v vergil fight we get in dmc5.
@leithaziz27167 ай бұрын
I'd say DMC3 is the most complete campaign and the biggest "package" you can get from buying a DMC game. Like you said, DMC5 is a very close contender, but you're gonna have to settle for extremely basic level design and puzzles, and somewhat lackluster artdesign for the locations you visit. All as a compromise for having the best combat in the genre. This is also a personal nitpick, but DMC3's enemy roster is a mixed bag as many of them are not that fun to fight.
@jurtheorc81177 ай бұрын
@@leithaziz2716 That's kinda what Soulstice was for me. That game took a bunch of inspirations from DMC5. Probably a harder game to get into than DMC5 outright, but so much to offer. One of the few gripes I have about this one is the fact that Vergil didn't have his own dedicated campaign, aside from specific cutscenes at the beginning the adventure. All his missions were just Dante's but recycled. I mean in the missions where you would ordinarily fight Vergil as Dante, they just have Vergil fight himself, but palette swapped his color to red so you can tell them apart. Like don't get me wrong, it's incredibly cool that he was made a playable part of the game, but the lack of originality in his "story" does bug me. A sadly, recurring trend throughout the remainder of the franchise. Again, it is incredibly cool and satisfying to have the option to play as him if you so choose, but with the original intro we see at the start of his campaign, I was under the assumption all his missions would be as well.
@MilestheDirtyMindedGoblin20997 ай бұрын

@twall915 ай бұрын
Yall gotta remember, Vergil was NOT originally a playable part of the game. It was only after they re-released the game as the special edition that he was even an option to play as. So any expectations of more Vergil specific content beyond what we actually have is asking for the equivalent of DLC in today’s landscape. But at the time, the special edition released like a year after the original Vergil-less build of the game for roughly HALF the cost. So it’s actually an admirable amount of effort that went into including him even as is.
@BenOlsberg19955 ай бұрын
@@twall91 Oh yeah don't get me wrong, I certainly wasn't belittling the amount of effort the game already has. To call it admirable would be a comical understatement. And honestly, I'd attribute my desire to have a more narrative driven version of the Vergil campaign to my own specific desire(s). When I get invested in characters I tend to just enjoy seeing stories that flesh them out more, that's all. Between the far better balanced difficulty and the added Vergil content, It's easy to see why the re-release is labeled as "Special Edition", and why so many people still regard it as the golden standard, even now after the 5th game has been out for some time.
@leithaziz27167 ай бұрын
While Character Action games (with the exception of Nier Automata. A very emotional game I highly recommend) have a stigma of not delivering the most compelling of stories, I personally love DMC3's small story. Seeing Dante go from rejecting his family's legacy and demonic power, to later taking responsibillity and accepting his role as humanity's protector just like his father. All the while, Vergil rejects his human half for the sake of more power. Dante follows the classical "Hero's Journey" and all the ways Vergil acts as Dante's foil is so fascinating to watch. Easily the best narrative in DMC and one of the better told action games stories.
@jurtheorc81177 ай бұрын
I think that character action games can actually deliver quite compelling stories, even if only half at times. Character side of the "Action" side. There's certainly games that are as simple as, say, Marlow Briggs and the Mask of Death. That's just "save the world, your beloved, and defeat the bad guy". And games like the Ninja Gaiden trilogy, which to my understanding is considered generally messy in trying to do something with the characters, and is thus more remembered for very good fast-paced action. And then there's stuff like Darksiders series, Soulstice, the Lords of Shadow series, Heavenly Sword and Knight's Contract. And to a degree Dante's Inferno as well. - Knight's Contract: The black plague has swept over the lands, and a coven of witches who was only known for aiding mankind, have been made the scapegoat of this tragedy by the great Inquisitor Faust. Heinrich, the executioner, was cursed with immortality by the last witch he executed. Years later, with the return of the black plague --and of all the vengeful, maddened witches-- he now accepts a contract with that very same final witch, to slay her sisters once more to safeguard mankind and keep their secrets safe from the manipulative Inquisitor. And together they make a duo that respect one another greatly. - Heavenly Sword: A woman who has been scorned by her own clan all her life for not being born a man, as stated in accordance with an ancient prophecy, takes up the very treasure that her clan was set to protect yet anyone not of divine blood was forbidden from wielding as a weapon. This she does for the very few people within her clan that have made her life worth living. All the conflict in the game is centered around the very weapon she takes up, the stigmas and faith surrounding it dooming her life before it even began. - Lords of Shadow: The final effort of a good-hearted man going through greater depths than any human within the world has before, in order to save his beloved. But the few allies he makes through his journey are lost to him again soon, through one way or another, he finds himself the subject of various manipulations, his initial hope to reunite with his beloved proves to be in vain, and the sequels Mirror of Fate and Lords of Shadow 2 show that his very own son and lineage had been kept secret from him by the very brotherhood he was part of and served in the name of the Lord. Little wonder that he willingly takes up the mantle of Dracula, and makes it his vow to forever be a thorn in the Lord's side and hurt mankind, to return the favor of torment that He has given him and his lineage. These are some of the lesser known/talked-about ones. And granted, they have their issues too, but there's still a good amount of stuff to stand still at with their stories. Darksiders (as a whole series) and Soulstice are high up on the front of having compelling stories within the character action genre, be it for the sake of the world, for the characters themselves, or both. Oh, and Hi-Fi Rush. (with a quick honorary shout to No Straight Roads) (Metal Gear Rising probably has most to show for it thanks to the interactions with all the bosses and all the optional Codec calls). And i don't mean this in being as profound as NieR: Automata, that game's quite exceptional on its own. I just mean that the bar for compelling narratives within character action games is generally solid, there's a lot to offer, but like you said, there's a stigma on the genre about the stories just being excuses for button-mashing gameplay. Admittedly, i don't know to what extent that stigma persists these days. So i apologize if i sound ignorant and like a crotchety older man annoyed with the youth.

Character action games?
@jurtheorc81177 ай бұрын
@@Жойлес There's a bunch of debate on what name the genre should have. Some say "hack-and-slash is fine enough", others don't think so because it's more a term for dungeon crawlers or stuff like Diablo. Some call it Spectacle Fighter because you fight and it's an over-the-top spectacle due to fast pace and high fantasy or sci-fi elements, and you push yourself to play as stylishly as possible. Some reasons, as I understand it, for Character Action as a name, is because the focus is equally on the character and action. Not just on that they fight, but that there can be quite compelling narratives and interesting, larger-than-life or more subdued characters alike in the main role. There's got to be a reason why this character can do the stuff they do, right? It can be a child of a noble demon who rather hates his demon heritage while his twin brother does the opposite. It can be a man who was killed by a power-hungry megacorp CEO defiling ancient Mesoamerican ruins in search of a mystical power, and yet the same ritual weapon the CEO used to kill the man brings the man back to life, accompanied by the possessed death mask of an Aztec prince. It can be cyborg ninjas rediscovering why it is he fights, a crusader empowered by Death's scythe through the circles of hell and facing his own sins in life, it can be *an undesired witch child of Light and Darkness, overpowered Dracula, or the Four Horsemen themselves* Or just a funny wannabe rockstar bloke with a guitar or a cheerleader with a chainsaw fighting zombies. Bottom line being-- there's debate on the proper name of the genre, and people have their reasons beyond what i've stated here. Big comment, but i hope this helps!

@ J's Reviews: Small but important thing I feel the need to highlight here concerning Dante's devil awakening when you mentioned it around the 17 minute mark. It isn't the defeat it's self or even the taking of the amulet that caused him to awaken, it's actually the fact that Vergil used his brother's own personal sword to deliver what he intended to be the final blow. Or rather more aptly put, the key to awakening his devil power was/is to be impaled by Rebellion it's self since it's pretty much keyed to him on what can be considered a literal spiritual and bloodline deep level. Keep that in mind because that's gonna be important later on in another moment too when reaching the time for your eventual DMC5 review. Oh and one more small thing, though I'm pretty sure it might have already been brought to your attention, but Doppleganger and the Dante/Vergil tag team fight are in a funny way just a hidden pseudo-multiplayer mode since, at least on the PS2 version if you got a second controller plugged in and a friend around you can have them take control personally of the clone & Vergil respectively.
@Dhampire19767 ай бұрын
Yeah, Dante did literally die in the fight and if he wasn't stabbed by rebellion, a sword confirmed in 5 to be the main thing to boost Dante's powers when he is stabbed with it he would've stayed dead. Him being stabbed is what unlocked his power in 3, and in 5 him being stabbed with it while holding onto Sparda's sword unlocked even more power.

Hello there, thanks for watching. To answer this question, I will start with the old saying "There is no substitute for experience." You can't be confident with something you have never done. Developing an ability to write words that are meant to be spoken and then finding the voice that best delivers them takes time. For example, here is my original Jak 2 review from 2016, it was my fifth review (and now we are up to like 250 or something) kzbin.info/www/bejne/bajRmKOalrmWfrcsi=q50_tGUaufabsih6 You can clearly hear that I am nowhere near as comfortable with how to do it and I don't think I became that way until 2017. But even then, I have evolved how I deliver lines many times over the years as my personality changes . Like I used to have a very enunciated and emphatic delivery style, compared to now where I keep my energy pretty low. But yeah, an ability to do comedic timing would come after being able to speak into the mic at all. Hope that helps.

One thing you can do is play a game you love (or hate), make a list of points you know you wanna talk about. And then just type them out in a script in the style that you would just talk about these things to a friend. Then when your script feels ready, talk to a friend that also knows the game. And ask them to listen to you read your script to them and see how they feel about it. Do they follow what you're saying? Do they find what you have to say insightful? Do they find issues with your statements? etc

this might sound stupid but dont just read it off as if you’re doing a reading at church. exaggerate your voice what you’re saying. you’ll have to put a lot more energy into it than you would for your normal speaking voice and it will sound stupid to you in the moment. but trust me, when you’re watching the video with the “exaggerated” narration over it, it sounds a hell of a lot more natural than you think it does when you’re recording it. i would say give it a try, maybe let someone else listen after and see how it turns out

Regarding the first Vergil encounter. On every single run I do of this game, whenever I reach Vergil1, I always treat him with the respect he deserves. Level 3 Swordmaster, Rebellion and Ebony& Ivory. Nothing more, no dodging, no guarding, just good ol' fashioned swish-swish stab and pew pews. Never gets old. Vergil2 and 3's arsenals and repertoirs are...different stories.

probably because i've been reading/viewing this type of media for years, i called arkham/jester straight off - other clues not with standing. you've already had one big clue as to the fact that arkham is hellishly strong - when he flips Dante's desk in the start. dmc 3 was the first video my son ever made aged ten, he recorded the the cutscenes on his combi. i liked the wee touch of announcing the mission number in the opening cutscene. i wish more games did that.

You know I DO like Rebellion and the fact it’s supposed to be Dante main weapon and sister sword to Vergil. Plus it seems like it’s important to him. But WHY the heck was it NOT in DMC1!? Like where it go? I know DMC3 was developed waaay after 1&2. But I feel there’s no IN-Universe reason why there’s a time period where he doesn’t seem to use it. Than suddenly in DMC4 & 5 which take place way in the future. Dante now using it like it never left. Idk that just bothered me and I can’t understand why.

DMC3 is the first and only DMC game I've played. I thought it was fun, but I definitely thought it was really hard (I struggled with every boss, particularly with Beowulf and Blob Arkham for hours upon hours and I still haven't beaten Vergil the third time.) Are 4 and 5 harder? And do they have spiders? My friend who recommended 3 to me did not warn me about the spider enemies and they discomforted me.
@jurtheorc81177 ай бұрын
I don't think DMC4 and 5 are harder, even though they can still get difficult. DMC4 does have some big lows, mainly in terms of structure (the second half of the game is going backwards throughout the levels and fighting three of the earlier bosses again, albeit with a twist), one tedious and annoying boss called The Saviour, the final boss being a bit... whatever, and some of the rooms having a dice game that waste time. Neither of them have spider enemies. 4 only has some plants that can latch onto some normal enemies and have unudulating vine tentacles. The worst stuff i've heard about 5, is that for... 2/3s of the game, or at least the second half, the level design is quite similar. Not a lot of interesting stuff to look at by reason of largely taking place in a colossal demonic tree. There's also a big amount of people that aren't big on the Summoner-like playstyle of the character named V, I believe that characters are pre-set for different levels, and there is a little bit of debate on how good the story really is. That, and some have found the total amount of options Dante gets overwhelming. I'm not saying this to discourage you from trying these out, just being clear in shortcomings and criticisms as I understand theem. (Sidenote, Soulstice from 2022 and the upcoming Genokids are in this similar genre, and are well worth checking out and sperading word on to your friends. Soulstice may be a bit tougher to get into due to having a lot of mechanics, the story and pacing drag a bit in the middle and also have that problem of art direction/environments feeling similar, and some other issues, but the combat feels *really* good, there's seven total weapons with their own utilities and differences in how they operate, over 20 enemy types total, 7 different bosses, and quite a good story. Would *very much* recommend getting the Grappling Hook move for the whip as soon as you can. Some enemies can be more annoying than they otherwise could be because of it, but *with* the Grappling Hook move they're more managable.)

Honestly after playing through dmc3 after playing 5 first I felt really bad about how dmc5 potrayed Dante in cutscenes. First of all the cutscene production isn't nearly as good as in 3, and second of all there are barely any action cutscenes in the first places, and each time Dante is in one he gets his ass beat. Like against Urizen (multiple times) or against Vergil, and even getting bitch slapped by Nero. He definitely lacks scenes like him going all out on cainas or other enemies, the only time he does that is when he gets the bike, but that cutscene feels very weak compared to 3 and even 1 ngl. Nero does have some more cooler scenes in 5 like vs Goliath but it's still not as good as 3 cutscenes

it's evident with DMC5 that both Itsuno and the cutscenes Director have lost their swagger after all the years between DMC3/4 and DMC5, 5 lacks the cool factor and stylish choreography that the previous games had in their story/presentation, even the game's writting and voice acting direction is neutered, where the cast just does not do or say cool & memorable stuff within the story like previous games, and even the actors voice deliveries lack the swag and charm they had prior basically DMC5 really feels like a "flacid" _imitation_ of previous games, at least in it's overall presentation and vibe

This is my very first DMC game I've played. Bayonetta was my introduction into Hack n Slash games. So I was curious to see what I missed out on. They recommended me DMC3 as an great starting point and yeah, they were right. The game was awesome. I still prefer Bayonetta 1 & 2 more because of an fast paste combat & scope levels. But I can see how many enjoyed DMC. I don't know if I'll get to the others. Especially DMC5; which is considered on par with the 3rd game or even better. But yeah. I'm now an DMC fan.

Easily I'd say DMC3 is my favorite in the trilogy, I don't have the Switch port so I can't speak on how it is personally, but I don't mind only having two weapons for melee and guns too much, though I'm sure I'd enjoy Style Switching in DMC3. Maybe Capcom will re-release the HD Collection again with the Switch port of DMC3 being used as the basis, who knows? It could happen. I can get behind some of J's critiques of this game, like Air Hike should be something Dante should have for all his weapons and having to purchase Air Hike for all of them being redundant, I too am not too big on some missions, not necessarily dislike mind you, in fact I personally never got lost in Mission 15 but that's probably because of my own general experience for a ton of games and how often I replay the ones I enjoy, I'll say hear hear to the Jester boss battles in Special Edition being messy. I'd have to disagree on Vergil 2 being the hardest boss in the game personally speaking. Might be a touch bit unfair to say, but I agree that Vergil kinda sucks to play as in DMC3, he has some tech for sure but he's not fun to play as compared to Dante in DMC3 in my opinion, though I'll admit there's some level of satisfaction I get in tearing Beowulf to shreds in seconds with the Yamato. I agree that the EXP system doesn't mix well with a Devil May Cry game, the boss rush helps but I'd rather spend Red Orbs to earn all my upgrades. Oddly, I found DMC3 easier to get the platinum trophy than DMC1, might be because I either didn't play my platinum trophy run on Turbo Mode or a combination of factors like general experience with the game. My favorite weapon in the game is a simple one; Beowulf, a more refined Ifrit in almost every way, though I do miss the mega damage Ifrit's more damaging attacks do, I always enjoyed using Meteor and Inferno with their high damage in DMC1, though I suppose Real Impact makes up for it.

Hi there, I totally agree with you regarding the style switch . We 've had so many re-releases of the game as of now , that the style switch should have been included by now, at least as an option to play the game with. Out of all the versions of it, I also find the one for the Switch to be the best. I always disliked the fact that you have to choose which style you want to continue with, the reason being that I simply love all of them for a reason. It's the reason I mostly find myself returning to DMC4 or 5 and just play the Dante missions. Nevertheless, I like Dante's version and the whole story the most in this game.

I recently replayed it and despite it not aging well and Capcom doing very badly with HD collection, this is still the best game in the series. I 100% agree on your criticisms for this game. Not being able to double jump freely like that is the biggest offender for me personally. Well that and level layouts, some parts of it are questionable at best
