Thanks to everyone for enjoying my perspective on what might've happened to our dear friend - I didn't expect such a positive reception! This whole thing was conjured up in a moment of inspiration while driving after E114 aired, and every day I doubted whether it was worth the time/emotional investment. I am certainly glad I pushed those feelings aside and finished it off! I don't know whether I'll attempt another animatic (maybe if the spark of inspiration strikes again!), but I'll certainly be uploading timelapse videos of my regular paintings/animations in the coming weeks.

The best part is there still is no proof that Lucien is doing something that is 'bad'. Honestly I think this is the best narrative Matt has done to date.

Molly was just Lucien without the life experience and memories, and all the muscle memory and skills. The accent even carried over....sort of. Lol Joking aside, I feel you. Molly was amazing and to be admired. It feels so wrong that Lucien is actually the default.

i really like to remember molly's philosophy about it. the only thing that he had in common with lucien was his body, and that's not enough to say they were the same person. it gets tricky when talking about ressurection, though, because they are *probably*, but not certainly, the same soul. so molly was a person not defined by their soul, which is very weird, and would mean he couldn't possibly be revived, unless in some very weird plot of bringing his memories or if that experience ruptured lucien's soul in two.

thing is... Matt had this storyline written out before Molly even died. Remember at the end of that fateful episode when Matt said this will make for a good story (or something along those lines) this is what he meant. Matt is one of those DM that will write out many possible big bads and plot points knowing most of them will never see the light of day. I think when Molly died that's when Matt knew Lucien was going to be the direction the plot goes.

To be fair, it won't work THAT well with anyone. Molly/Lucien was perfect for that role. When he died, people already half-expected him to get up again and be a villain. If, let's say, Beau had died in that fight, then it wouldn't have been that easy to bring her back as an enemy.

You'd have to be reeeeally careful in discussing that kind of move with your players before trying anything like this. Done poorly, it could be taken as a massive overstep by the DM to completely contort a former PC into the BBEG. I'd say a lot of this was drawn from what Taliesin had provided in his backstory, and there would have definitely been a conversation between them both after Molly died regarding what kind of posthumous control Matt could take over Molly's unfinished plotline, given that it clearly revolved around Molly having come back to life at least once before. Taliesin's the kind of player who would LOVE this turn, and likely trusts Matt's narrative taste implicitly, but I can't imagine this happening without the player's stamp of approval.

@@waybackinthe90s That is a fair point, and yes I agree especially if you're taking a character the player is really invested in. I try not to mess with the vision my players have of their characters. Honestly this requires a very special set of circumstances for this to work, and the best I could pull off is having a dead characters body be possessed or taken over. That doesn't quite have the same impact.

I think Molly was on the border between chaotic good and chaotic neutral. A lot of people think of neutral as kind of equally good and evil. But the way I see it and one of the theories I’ve read before is that almost everyone in dungeons and dragons is neutral, and neutral people generally prefer good over evil, they just don’t take that step of doing good deeds themselves and prioritizing others. Molly was certainly not evil but he generally speaking out his own needs and priorities first.

@@andrewmcmillan229 The way that I think about alignment is by asking myself “Ultimately, are their intentions good-hearted or not?” I definitely know where you’re coming from. I don’t think Molly would go out of his way to do a good deed however I don’t think it would be very hard to convince him otherwise, which is what makes me call him chaotic good. Same thing with Lucien: he doesn’t seem entirely selfish because of how he seemed to genuinely feel sorry for the Mighty Nein getting attached to Molly. But he’s still wrapping himself in all the eyes of nine crap so I’d classify him as evil. That’s just how I see it.

Lucien is lawful evil. He has an agenda, his own laws and a code. He has a mission and a reason for everything he does (at least for now). He didn't fight the Mighty Nein when they meet, he even explained he wasn't what they were looking for, he actually invited them to be part of what he's doing and let them go when rejected. He's lawful. MAYBE Neutral, we'll see how it goes, but no chaotic.

I like how when he's alone or just with the Tomb Takers, Lucien seems to be a lot more somber--even when he's smirking to himself on that ship, it seems more contemplative than smug. But then when he's around others he seems to get a lot cheerier and creepier, like it's a performance.

I absolutely agree. Taking a dead PC and making them a big bad is a genius move and lucien is easily one of my favorite villains in ANY d&d show. He's charming and incredibly charismatic but deep down he's likely an evil monster to anyone but himself and those that follow him.

@@lobo33542 yes!! i think lucien is the most ingeniously dangerous character the MN have ever faced. Obann had a loong and complicated plan, but lucien had the power and planning to probably one-shot a memeber of the cerberus assembly. I just finished ep 114 and GOD I'm so excited.

Lucien is similar to obann in the fact that they're both intelligent characters and viciously determined to accomplish their goals but with Lucien it's more personal in a sense because of molly and the nein. They see molly but it isn't molly, and I can't wait to see how that effects the nein, specifically beau, yasha and caleb since they had the most meaningful moments with molly imo. Without any spoilers, Lucien is one of the most charismatic and subtly intimidating villains I've seen. Matt does so well at keeping him charming but showing that he's clearly dangerous.

What I really love about both campaigns so far is Matt and Taliesin's storytelling powers combined. Tal has such a talent for crafting engaging characters that are engaging not because of their backstory, but because of how he plays them; because of who they ARE. Then he leaves most of the backstory work to Matt, who weaves it into his world so beautifully you can't imagine it existing witout Tal's character. Whether you're creating a D&D world, or writing a fantasy novel, this is some god-tier stuff that just can't be beat.

I was waiting for so long for Molly's story to come back up and they could go back and find him not there as a reveal. I never expected it to be THAT epic and end the campaign though. That was genius.

Then things only got worse... seriously, I love Lucien as an antagonist to the Nein. Somehow more personal than Obann and even deadlier than all their other enemies combined. And with the events of episodes 121, 122 and 123, Lucien has definitely been cemented as the Nein's most dangerous threat. I love this MV Animatic. Super sleek and something tells me it's not far off from what Lucien actually did upon being revived. Also the music kicks some ass.

completely agree. Matt's made a lot of great antagonists from The Assembly to Obann or even Leandros and the Shepards. However, it's strange Obann was certainly one of the most deadly and irritating while Leandros literally killed Molly... but something about Lucien just makes him top of the danger list personally

He was my absolute favourite and I was very sad to see him go, but the way Matt has brought him back has made me love him all the more - even if he was just a fragment of a MUCH larger being. I have my own theory that Molly will shine through one last time and help the M9 from the inside, but that's probably too cliché 😂

When he died Matt just put two and two together and now we have what I am almost certain will go down as one of the most interesting antagonists of the show as a whole.

That scene where Lucian talked to Jester as she was scrying *really* unsettled me. And then freaked me out even more when I found out where/when it happened, and that he was just upstairs. Such a wicked creepy character! That also made me really sad, because it used to be Molly. And every so often Matt would make him say/do something that reminded me of him, and it was like opening old wounds.

Thank you, I really appreciate it! The inspiration came solely from the music (as well as the hype from the ending of E114), and so far I haven't had that same experience since. The only other interpretation I can think of doing is the fall of Aeor so if I can find a song that fits.. I might just have to do another animatic! :)
