Episode 19: Devil's Garden Primitive Loop 🔥 Arches National Park // WATCH BEFORE YOU GO🔥
On our visit to Arches National Park reading up on the trails to do the Devil's Garden Loop stood out as a trail we couldn't miss. We went the day before meeting up with family since this trail was known to be difficult, long, hot and not exactly kid friendly. Coming straight from the Grand Tetons Lake Solitude Trail, this was like flipping a switch for a complete opposite experience. Not that it was easier - just different. We got to the park around 7:30 am and drove through the park to the trailhead. Be sure to pick up or download a map prior to entering the park because it is not long before your cell service goes out. We went the third week of June 2020 and it was incredibly hot. We did take all of the extensions (which is just under 8 miles) and went clockwise through the trail, which I would recommend.
The thing I really loved about this trail was the element of surprise. The trail is well marked by over 100 cairns and you need them. There are times you look around and wonder, am I supposed to climb up there? This isn't a trail that just gently takes you on a path to see arches. You're up on ledges, walking on cliffs, scrambling down slopes and rocky terrain. It is NOT accessible to everyone. I was thankful for my flexibility and overall health on this trail. There was one section that the rocks created a bowl-like impasse where there was little to no way to get around besides sliding in and getting wet. Mason is much more coordinated than I am and ran around the edge of the bowl like Sonic the Hedgehog. I fell into the pit of despair - shocker. It was incredibly fun.
You see SO many arches on this trail it was just incredible. They take your breath away and there are more photo ops than you can count. It really is a natural wonder and they won't be here forever, so the time to see them is now. By far the biggest arch is at the very front, the Landscape Arch spanning 306' long which is one of the largest natural spans in the world! If you're able definitely do not miss this trail!

If I were still teaching your videos would be an awesome resource for teaching geography of our national parks. The different rock formations, landscapes, and climates are shown in such a personal and interesting way. Another winner! To add a mom note, please be careful around the cliffs and rough terrain! Miss you.

Awesome video. Amazing footage. Arches is absolutely beautiful. I have not been there yet, but it's at the top of my list of National Parks to visit. Subbed

Another great travelogue...informative, entertaining and beautiful! Have you considered sending these to the National Park system? What an asset they would be for them to share with other hikers. We love traveling along with you via KZbin so keep the videos coming!

I'm just so surprised there was no mention of the huge wall you have to scale. That thing freaked me out. But I lived to tell the tale.

So, the part of the video when one of you is scaling downward over some large rocks is on the "trail" to Navajo Arch? I'm up for trying, but I don't think the rest of the 'mature' members of the family can do that! I guess we'll have to turn around after Landscape Arch!

Hi Paul! Thanks for checking out the video. Some of the scrambling we did was part of the Primitive Loop. While that might not work for everyone, there are trail variations that might suit the group better and still see the majority of the arches. Have fun out there!

If you want to train for this trail, light a bag of coals, spread them out on the ground and stand on top of them. Just sayin'.

We so glad you are loving them! We tag the NPS, but I don’t think we have the viewership to catch there attention yet.
