Hi Pete, it was great to see the FLG5 being used again mate as it brings back memories of when I was starting out and trying to get a finish that was worth posting😂I had 2 of them one for primer and one for base and clear, ah the good old days🤓🤠 The bonnet (you called it a bumper a couple of times🧐🤭) came out nice mate you can't deny that the old FLG can lay the clear on nice but it's also a damn good base gun, as you said there are better guns out there for the price these days but if you are new to the painting lark then a second hand FLG5 could be a good starting point👌 It's about time my Porphis was getting here😩😦🤣thanks Pete👍

Hi John, yeah, I actually did these last year, but I thought I would get this out as lots of people still as about the FLG5 as a starter gun. It's definitely showing its age now, but obviously, it's as good as it ever been . Cheers, mate, give it time, and you'll have you PRD 😁

Hey Pete! Still having a go with the ole FLG, I see. I have to agree that it's no longer the best value it used to be, but in honesty, that was quite some years ago. The one thing I differ on is to me, it's more suitable for home use and medium viscosity clears. The 1.4 with a thinner clear has decent speed without gobs of overspray. Turning the pressure up just a hair over 2 bar allows me to really lay stubborn clear flat (Nason 498-00). Now that being said, for me, it isn't the greatest with higher solids clear like Upol 2802 or Nason 465-00. I definitely don't use it for metallic basecoat. The Dram will be getting its turn soon on a high solid clear, however. The FLG5 could remain an MS gun or sit on the shelf depending on the outcome.
@peteshobbies53833 ай бұрын
Hi Boss, Yeah, it certainly has been around a while. What you are saying makes perfect sense. It's one of the reasons I used a clear on this that flows out nicely, so small quantities work well. With the upol, it struggles to get enough on. Obviously, you can, but it really slows it up, I have no doubt it'll last ages, and my need to change the seal on the end of the tip isn't shared by many, so maybe it's just me, probably because I like to clean the gun properly before I store it as I may not use it for a while. Cheers mate 👍
@thimira923 ай бұрын
Why don't you use it for metallic basecoats?
@bosshawg74273 ай бұрын
@thimira92 I prefer something with a wider fan like the Kiwami4 or LPH400. LPH400 would be more ideal in cooler weather since it doesn't throw out much. Kiwami4 in warner to hot weather.
@arvizu6193 ай бұрын
can not seem to lay the FLG5 down over the years lol, for some reason I can not list it for sale even thought already own more expensive guns. I too notice it makes way less overspray compared to for example a pro lite or LPH400 for some reason.
@bosshawg74273 ай бұрын
@arvizu619 the LPH400 is somewhat of a trick gun. Yes, it is efficient and doesn't put out much paint or overspray. However, try to speed it up and get it super flat, then it isn't as great as it seems. I prefer to use the LPH400 on metallic basecoats

Great review Pete! and perfect timing since I was just about to buy a 1.8 tip for my FLG5 and Convert it into a High Build primer gun. Good to know the 1.8 isnt big enought for it. What would be your recommendation for a good budget primer gun? I was thinking on maybe an ANI FN with a 2.0 or maybe 2.5.
@peteshobbies53833 ай бұрын
Hi Mate, the ANI goes 1.7, then 1.9 and then 2.5, I have the 1.9 and 2.5, I use the 1.9 for high build and it's a joy, it's what made me realise the FLG5 wasn't as good as I thought it was 😂, think they do a 2.0 for the FLG5 but the ANI has a bigger wetter fan so ideal for high build primer
@arvizu6193 ай бұрын
@@peteshobbies5383 could not find a 2.0 anywhere for the FLG5. I was talking about the Budget ANi F1/NS I seen those have a 2.0 2.5 tips not sure if thats worth it to buy as a primer gun since its really low budget end or maybe worth dishing out for a F160 for primer

Hi Pete. The Flg5 still getting it done. I'm like you and have out grown it. It sprays clear nice if you do your part. Not particularly fast but good enough. Not the best for metallics on big panels. Since I started using Iwatas I don't want to use anything else. I spray in my garage and the LPH400 LVX and LV4 keeps the overspray down and is easier to use for me. Probably one of the easiest guns to use for pro results I think👍
@peteshobbies53833 ай бұрын
Hi Mate, Yeah, you're right about metallics. The fans are not big enough for metallics. You can do them, but you need to stand well back for the drop coat to even up the coverage. The split tips Iwatas are a different world, in both performance and, of course, price
@bosshawg74273 ай бұрын
I also have the LPH400 in both versions. They do spray great and with less overspray if you stick with the psi on the air cap, but I also find it to be slower than the FLG5 1.4 at 2 bar. The FLG5 is a great beginner's gun where one can learn to spray with a wide open fan and fluid, allowing them to focus more on speed and overlap. Once that is well-developed, confidence in more capable guns are attainable. I do not find that with the LPH400 of course, everyone's experience varies.
@MarcBchannel3 ай бұрын
@bosshawg7427 I'll have have to revisit and play around with the FLG with the 1.4 nozzle. My US market kit came with the 1.3/1.4/1.8 nozzle sets, a 900ml alum cup, and an HVLP air cap. Ive only used the 1.3. I had to buy a separate FLG5 air cap from the UK because that HVLP cap is terrible. Most of the hype with this gun came from people using the 1.4 before the 1.3 became available.
@bosshawg74273 ай бұрын
@MarcBchannel Yes, the 1.4 is not so slow that you can't do a complete, but a big caveat is I use thinner 4:1 clears. That makes a bit of difference in how the gun behaves with speed and trying to get the clear flatter. I would not use it on a high solid clear. I have tried, and it was more work than my experience preferred. That said, I also have the Kiwami4, and it will get away from you with a thin clear if ran wide open and you're not a fast painter.
@MarcBchannel3 ай бұрын
@bosshawg7427 Ya I have a Bellaria in 1.3 and it's a hoser😁 I really like it tho. Lays clear with the best of them and it's really good with metallics. When I first started painting I shot thin clears full open at 2bar. I've since learned to dial everything back for better results. Thx for all the tips and experiences

Hi Pete I just bought a Ani R160 mini 1.2 based on your recommendation and was about to get a FLG5 in 1.8 for epoxy primer, plus a 1.4 or 1.3 tip for base and clear. but after seeing this I think I will put a pin in that plan :) Can you recommend another good all round gun? I plan to paint a bonnet and a car door. Epoxy primer, green metallic base, clear. Kind regards Mads from Copenhagen. Ps. Thank you for the video and also for answering so many comments, I learned a lot from both.

Thank you so much for your reply Pete I found a supplier for the Ani f160s/plus/ HPS and two guns, one with a 1.9 and one with a 1.3 will cost me about the same as a one FLG5 with an extra tip set. (After brexit getting UK products in the EU can be tricky and expensive 😢) I just watched the video you linked to, and noted you used HPS cups/tips. Am I right in assuming that is the way to go and forget about the HVLP, WB and CLEAR they sell? (at double the price). Kind regards Mads Ps. I learned to TIG welding and metal shopping watching Trev’s blog, now i will start the next leg of my journey watching your videos, keep up the good work, it is very educational and inspiring.
@peteshobbies53832 ай бұрын
@madsm.christensen9221 Yes, the HPS cap is a good all-around cap and works well. Have you looked at Sprayguns Direct? , they do a lot of ANI, I know they ship with your sales tax inclusive and no UK tax since Brexit, so they are normally quite competitive, and it may be worth emailing them for a price. There is also PRP SHOP in Italy, I've had some Walcom stuff from them before, and they were ok, not sure about aftersales service though .

@reynaldoalverio3999 It's no problem having your opinion. It certainly benefits the finish, and heating up clear coat is widely practiced. It also depends on your local conditions and temperature as to how beneficial it may be, if you ambient temperature is 25C, then there is much less benefit than working in 10C.
