I say this as a completionist for every Yakuza game: I love Yakuza 5, but oh my God, I do not want to go through that game again. Every point you made here I agreed with in one way or another. Whether it was the bloated content amount (which is fine if you're casual, I'm just a masochist), the weapon crafting (which is really only practical on Shinada, but also the Equipment Skill Levels didn't help either), the insane amount of dialogue, especially the Coliseum and half of the tournaments with the most annoying gimmicks ever (I'm looking at you, Limited Berserk w/ Akiyama) etc. I really would love to go back to this game, but I just can't bring myself to do it because of how much the game seemingly does not want you to play through it again.
@dragoknighte482 ай бұрын
5's weapon crafting I have the least problems with of any Yakuza game. Unlike 3 or 4 you don't have to go on wild goose chases just to be able to find blueprints that'll tell you what you can craft in the first place, on top of needing the items to actually craft them (and in 3's case, the game straight up lies to you what items you need for crafting). And 0 is the worst of all, throwing you into a gambling waiting simulator where you throw millions of yen into the abyss and stand around to see if you get anything decent, heaven forbid if you actually needed to unlock something specific
@H2ORaccoon2 ай бұрын
@dragoknighte48 my main gripe with it was specifically for completion, the other games was not (as) bad, but since you had to craft every weapon in 5, I think the only game worse than 5 is Ishin

57:29 another thing ive been trying to get out there is the very strange mechanics behind Aizawas fight in 5. Its unique, but its far from any good, I personally despise it. For whatever reason, Aizawa tracks your movements in his final fight, to a point where you can't dodge behind him. In other words, he can't be whiff punished. And this is a yakuza 5 ism, but his guard can't be broken either, and he just uses his own knock back move to get you off When I tell people this they become suprised, and I can't say that they're at fault, because yakuza 5 lends itself into easily being cheesed, and I as someone who doesn't like to do that, imagine my suprise when as soon as I got to the final boss of 5 Masato Aizawa was fundamentally flawed in terms of combat, and nobody knew. Thats when I searched up his fight online, where 99% of all of the people who did used bounding throw loops, So just to prove I wasn't crazy i looked at your no upgrade of the game, lo and behold. That fight is an absolute nightmare without the necessary skills. Its honestly insane how they implemented something so weird and unfair, but managed to have it be unintentionally hiddeb by even more unbalanced design.
@maxwellpaynewell53052 ай бұрын
You've put more work into dissecting that fight than any no damager ever will. For what it's worth, I think they wanted that fight to be more spectacle than substance. It would explain the obnoxious amount of non-interactive segments. His moveset being the most counter-punishable in the game (besides Kanai, arguably) means that most players will just stun and pummel him until they get to watch another QTE sequence. They also probably just never considered that someone would play the game in a way different from their very specific vision for the game. Either way, valuable information to have, so thank you for that

The primary thing I noticed in Y5 during my time playing through is that it really can be summed up into the term "Series Hybrid". Y5 in part sometimes feels to me like it's having an identity crisis on what it's trying to accomplish. Does it wanna be it's own thing? Does it want to be a Previous Yakuza games? Does it want to shift into something new? I get the fact that the engine shift meant more work had to be put into the game, but you can't just look at me and tell me that there's direction to what's going on with the game, be it story, mechanics or something along those lines.

1:09:05 i remember reading somewhere that akiyama wasn't part of their original plan for yakuza 5 at all, and he was only included in the game because of his popularity in yakuza 4 i don't know how true this is, but it would explain why he feels so randomly inserted into the game compared to the other 4 characters, as well as having the shortest standalone story and the least amount of dedicated side content, he is more of an extension of haruka than his own character and it shows in basically every aspect of the game between the gameplay and even the story, he's there in haruka's story because she can't fight and does it on her behalf also as an addendum to this, voicing my own thoughts as someone who considers yakuza 5 to be the best game of the kiryu saga, I can definitely attest that the game is much more overwhelming than its brethren in how much content there is, I had initially started my first playthrough with the intent to do all of the sidestories and substories, only to be massively fatigued by the time that I reached the end of shinada's chapter that I said "I don't care, I'm finishing the game", completely ignoring all of the final few substories that only open up for each character during the final chapter after having made the effort to complete all of them beforehand because I had already spent over 60 hours getting to that point and the game was failing to keep me engaged, shinada's story being as good as it is was what kept me going enough to finish the game instead of dropping it for a bit because of burnout, something I hadn't felt at all when I was replaying the older games, even during yakuza 3 which I considered to be the absolute lowest point, the game's content bloat is extremely apparent and i do think that while it's nice to have so much to do, it's much more easy to get burnt out on it than any of the other games from my opinions a lot of the game's side content also doesn't really feel good to do at all, from what I can currently recall. minigames like pachinko speak for themselves in my experience in how they're something I didn't want to engage with at all, but haruka's sidestory especially mainly consists of just repeating the same performance of so much more and almost none of her other songs that it's mind-numbing, just repeating the same task over and over with the game pretending it's any different, and a lot of her tasks are similarly just asking you to do the same thing you've already done, but slightly different or "more difficult", there isn't really a lot of variety in it and it's where the side content fatigue started to set in massively for me

That’s what is great about this series. Me personally, Yakuza 5 is my favorite game in the series while Yakuza 4 is my least favorite by far. But I’ve seen people who will live and die by Yakuza 4 but don’t like Yakuza 5 that much. But when every single game in a series has a sizable number of people that say it is their favorite…you know the series is good. Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami, Yakuza Kiwami 2, Yakuza 3, Yakuza 4, Yakuza 5, Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, Judgement, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Like a Dragon: Gaiden, Lost Judgement, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. There are supporters and detractors for all of these games. All of these games are beloved by people who claim their favorite game is the best in the series. It is actually really good that we can’t agree on which game is the best.

I'm sure there will be similarities in the video, but to Me, Yakuza 5 is a game that starts seemingly great, but slowly drains more and more of your excitement away the further you get into the game.. The story just has this very unsatisfying way of revealing its mysteries I think, and the more the plot continues, you feel the characters all become more and more stupid by the end. And their only driving motivation is.. Haruka performing in the dome. (Which she technically does for someone else.) Personally, the fact that Shinada's story is probably the most consistent and interesting in the entire game, even though it doesn't matter at all to the main plot, is very telling. Same goes for how the combat gets more and more annoying over time, and the game just really trying to overstay its welcome by the finale. It's also such a massive middle finger to you if you loved 4 and hoped the story would continue from that. It rips Everything away that 4s Ending had built up for seemingly no reason other than desperately giving these characters new conflict. Which in turn made each story feel incredibly worthless in my opinion. Saejima returns to prison, because of course he does. Even though getting his innocence proven was the entire goal of his previous story. Kiryu ran away from Daigo yet again, even though he promised he'd help him out in the Tojo this time. Haruka... needed to be playable for some reason I guess? Turning her into a completely different character in the process, instead of just introducing a brand new female. Akiyama, same story as Haruka. They had no idea what to do with him, but he HAD to be playable I guess.. And Tanimura just Never existed apparently. Not a Single cameo or mention of him in the Entire Game! (Unless you 100% the game, which.. thanks I guess?) I'll leave it there for now. I'll probably add some more thoughts once I finished the video though.

Haven't watched this yet and I've just skimmed around, but I will definitely listen to it in full while doing something else at some point My view of the game boils down to how incredibly bloated it feels, to the point I found myself playing it out of a sense of duty towards the series rather than actually enjoying the unfathomable tons of extremely dissonant content (which you're forced to engage in multiple times) Also the combat was off, and while everyone now has extremely clear quirks (Kiryu having insane backturn combos and Dragon Rage, Saejima with forced restand combos and so on) rather than just working off bound like the past games there was such a clear power gap between protags If the entire game was designed the way the entirety of the Shinada section was, I would have enjoyed it a LOT more since it felt extremely refreshing RGG has finally moved on from playing off of people's nostalgia and is branching out into refreshing and coherent innovations in the later entries, but the PS3 era suffered the most from the stagnant formula they had been holding on to for so long Still, at the very least, the game's highs were unbelievable and the music is a top 5 contender throughout ALL of the games, but I'm never replaying the fucking game I'm not going through Saejima's hunting sidestory ever again

Something that’s similar to the Victory Road is the Beigoma in Eiyuden Chronicle. Where you have to run around battling people by spinning tops, it’s like Beyblade. Only thing is that it’s a tedious process as the starting Beigoma is trash. You have to go in areas where they drop Beigoma. Okay so I do that and come to find out, there’s different tiers and elements of Beigoma. The bronze Beigoma you start with is barely enough to start the entire side quest, as Reid, a character you have to recruit for the true ending, is your first hurdle to start the quest. Then I realize I don’t even get the Beigoma from the generic characters I beat, instead it is low level items. The boss Beigoma can be obtained, but not the generic npc’s Beigoma. To get more Beigoma, I have to run in areas and beat monsters…yup, not other npc’s that play Beigoma, monsters. Fortunately you can increase the item drop in the game with accessories but wait! You want the top tier gold Beigoma’s? You’ll have to wait until late mid game to open the areas for you to get them, and even then, some gold Beigoma are trash! I understand games needing extra content to justify the prices they’re selling, but both Victory Road and Beigoma are just not worth the hassle. Now lucky for me, Eiyuden has a new game plus feature where every character you unlocked stays unlocked, even at the beginning of the game. You only recruit them again for story reasons.
@ShatteredPedestal72 ай бұрын
Also to get Reid as a playable character, you have to beat 11 bosses. 6 of those with Gold Beigoma. It’s a tedious and long task and the stats Reid has is not worth it, he’s level 11 at END GAME. Now that might be no problem, just level him up. He still has worse stats than a level 80 character when he’s 99.

Akiyama's Launch Kick is a great move in yakuza 5 if you dont actually launch the enemies as you can infinite them on the ground and do a decent amount of damage on those unbreakable colisseum bosses. When I grinded everything for platinum (including those weapon revelations yeah they sucked) dodge launch kick was my main form of damage for many enemies and infinite looping enemies on the ground with launch kick. Yakuza 5 is still one of my less favorite yakuza games (y4 and yk2 probably lower due to prison section in y4 and I just didn't care for yk2). Also, one massive chore you didn't talk about is completing the hostess storyline. Where you have to complete all hostesses for each character. Go to Kamurocho as Akiyama to his club to start it and go back and talk to all the characters and then with each character go back to their city and talk to the hostess there and then back to Kamurocho to check in with that hostess before finally unlocking the final hostess and still having to do a regular hostess grind before then switching back to Akiyama to finish the section.

Well... Not the same reasons, I guess.... But it's ok. I'm used to it. I'm the kind of person that is happier if a book has more that 1000 pages and if some part of the grinding or completing a Yakuza game gets tedious, just play for 15m and stop. So I really don't care so much about the quantity over quality problem. Hell, I even really enjoyed Saejima’s bear hunting or dream adventures! What really piss me off about this game isn't actually a quality issue, is how it is written, and the huge amount of bullshit that it's message (all the "you must die following your dreams" nonsense) makes us deal with. It's kind of a personal problem too: I saw Haruka grow up. I considered her a really smart and emotionally wise girl. In my paternalistic love for the character I could imagine her as a doctor, a teacher, a fuckin astronaut....! But this mischievous game keeps bullshitting me about that her dream is been a fuckin idol?? A stigmatized tool for creepy groomers to simp and jerk about? Come on, I've played Yakuza 2... Game, you are trolling me, dontcha? Is Kiryu throwing all the hard work and sacrifice of previous games for this stupid and unhealthy life choice? And, well.... then you meet Mirei Park, the real villain of the story... And she is the most shitty person in all Soutenbori , and she manipulate and lie and even plays the missing mother theatrics card... And this game (using all it's internal propaganda, but mostly Akiyama's voice. That was his only task here actually) keeps repeating that we must die following not only Haruka's never declared "dream“ but Mirei's imposed one too? All about that show business in the game shows how disgusting and fake it is, and these stupid characters keep running in circles and ruining their lifes for the sake of a selfish manipulator.... Even Kiryu doesn't care about exposing Haruka to the life threatening situation of that concert for the sake of fulfilling Mirei Park's stupid projecting exercise... Fuck. The first time I played it, I was so angry... But in the end, my suspicions turned out to be justified. It was bullshit. I was right, this wasn't the real dream. This is a really long game written to trick you into accepting an unacceptable situation, and only in the end reveals its trolling nature. And yes, it's too damn long, and you really need to replay it with a cold head and without skipping dialogues to understand how is messing with your mind from the first to the last scene. Half of the people will believe the fake message and will complain about how "stupid“ was Haruka's last choice, and the other half will be too tired of grinding and doing secondary stuff to read between the lines. This storytelling was a perfect formula for a disaster. And it even used Majima as a fuckin McGuffin!!! How could they dare?!

This. So much of Yakuza 5's plot has fallen down on its face when it got to the Haruka part, the whole segment (which is also pretty damn long if you care about the side stuff) had me livid, it felt like the characters and the decision lead to it were completely out of character, and to this day I cannot excuse Kiryu letting himself be gaslighted by some random ass hoe coercing him into giving his daughter to a complete stranger, with no full and complete assurance of her and the orphanage's safety whatsoever. Whether the game trolling you in Y5 was intentional or not (since Y6 likes to treat her Idol phase as somewhat positive in a certain substory), that whole cutscene between Kiryu and Park, then subsequently with Kiryu and Haruka talking about it was nothing but forced, something that in the end of the day was completely unnecessary for 5's plot to continue or find another more reasonable, out of nowhere bs plot, to have all those characters by the balls and force them to do what they gotta do. Then there's Park, an absolutely disgusting and irredeemable selfish bastard, someone that for SOME REASON the others treat as a saint and the holy messiah of a strong person fighting to realize her dreams. No tf she isn't. She's just some conniving, manipulative asshat that forces Haruka to do her very damn best to realize Park's dreams, not Haruka's. All the cutscenes that tried to humanize her did nothing but boil my blood even more, trying to use them as an excuse for her to behave the way she did. Let's not forget that this is the same person that used The Orphanage as the quasi-hostage to keep forcing Haruka to do her bidding. The whole thing was incredibly tone deaf, it has me shocked to this day that someone wrote it all down, people probably looked at it for a second opinion, and they all gave it the damn greenlight. It's simply insane. With the rest of what Y5 has to offer I have little to no problem with it whatsoever, Aizawa was a character I appreciated more on a second run of the game, knowing who he is and how the story actually hides him well enough to keep him suspicious but not too suspicious, I know a lot of people have gripes with him being the finale, but I think he fits the role pretty well with Y5's whole 'Dream' motif. Haruka's part was the biggest insult to me in the whole story, her seeing Park as something Motherly even is... for me, incomprehensible. Her leaving at the very end was the best thing she could've done, but honestly, she should've left far sooner, or not even be in that position at all. Y6 ruins her character even further IMO but that's a different topic.

It may be weird, but I love Yakuza 5 because it's insane. The story gives Rubber Bullets a run for its money. The gameplay range goes from "Dragon God nuking thousands" to "Shinada breakthrough". I love it. I love the JPG shops. I love the nonsensical minigames and upgrade systems(Fuck the weapon system though). This is no defense of the game. I'm a masochist. I may need professional help.

The weapon revelations make me think that it really should've been something you can do from a low cost upgrade. Especially the ones where you run at enemies with an item, which 0 does, with Beast.

As somebody that 100%'d and platinumed Yakuza 5, fuck the weapon "upgrades" or whatever. If anything, it actively worked against the cheese for Shinada vs. Amon.
@armedweiss55312 ай бұрын
I've gotten the plat for 5, did basically everything except max out Haruka's level to 25 and get those unique weapon attacks since they're not needed. Really enjoyed the game as a whole, but holy fuck, I would never wish the hell of 5's plat upon anyone. There's just, SO much to do. I respect the ambition to make the game as big as it is, but it's just too much. You basically need a 100% save file since you have to finish the completion list, in one of if not THE game in the series with the most amount of side content.

My only problem with Yakuza 5 is how long it is. I remember when I was going through my Yakuza journey, I was able to play from 0 all the way to 4, and when I started 5, I had to take a break a little after I started Shinada's part. And while 5 isn't my favorite, it was an improvement over 3 and 4 and hell, I probably had the unpopular opinion that 5 should've been the end of Kiryu's journey. A very sad and even somber ending to him, but a wake up call on how Kiryu romanticized what being a Yakuza is just to have this life take everything from him, even his life despite wanting to walk away. Regardless, if I had to give 5 a score, I'd say an 8 out of 10.

Btw idk if you add this in the video but: If you wanna start play new game after you made breakout to 25 lvl for Haruka, it gonna break all Haruka part in new game + , its problem of remaster, idk if is it the same for original Yakuza 5 (I started replay all Yakuza games on new game + and find this critical bug) edit: If you wanna make new game + with your Premium Adventure you can simply just rename your PA Save file in CL Data file and stuff you get when played PA, you get in new game + (tested)

Playing IF8 54 times or probably more than that because of choking was really a tedious slog no defending that. Bead of good fortune and walking speed really helps with the annoying encounter. The encounter was kinda neat though where you can move around and ready your weapon during the encounter intro, really a sneak peak of the encounter we get in the later dragon engine.

This is the one game that almost broke my completionist streak, and every point you've brought up is 1000% valid. I still remember the torture of grinding to the top arena spot with *each character* and how long that awful grind took me. 😭

yakuza 5 akiyama was specifically developed to piss people off i swear there is no way that rgg studio never once accidentally triggered the fucking stupid ass launcher move during play tests and yet they thought it was ok to just leave it in

The quantity over quality thing being the largest section was understandable, but what I didn't expect was the length of combat oddities. And the weird thing it also kind overlaps with quantity over quantity. For instance, In one regard you have Kiryu and Saejima who essentially gains superhuman powers. In another regard, shinada has the weirdest moveset but it's simple and effective. And then Akiyama got nerfed but got weaker superpowers. And then all their abilities and stats are weird ... But at least that sort of paved the way for 0's style changing gimmicks and the Judgement series by extension?

I remember catching some yakuza 5 slander on one of your streams, then purely out of arrogance and spite booting up the game just to play a bit and enjoy it. 5 steps out of serena got into 3 encounters in a row. Lost all my motivation to continue and got humbled really quick haha.

I'm not sure if you mentioned the thing with Haruka and Locker keys but that really pissed me off. Atleast make her inventory shared with Kiryu or smth, I just lost 20 items 😢

The dream segments could have been cool, like imagine if instead of it being a weird detour in the story, the dram segment was just something you had access to at any time as saejima when he was in prison. Where like at any time you could return to his room and dream of the city and it let you have access to like minigames and stuff in the city. Maybe not substories but maybe just let you walk around fight people, so some karaoke and pool when you felt like fucking around in saejimas part

Actually didn't expect this to be all technical, no story involved whatsoever, but you're right in that it's more subjective. (Can't wait for that specific video, if there will be one) I agree with a lot of points you brought up still. Especially whenever you made comparisons to previous games. As I feel on their own, a lot of these changes wouldn't really hurt Yakuza 5 that much. But the combination of it all is what essentially drove me mad, little by little. The Upgrade system, Colluseum, No shared item sets, IF8, Encounter rate, and enemies being more aggressive in general with grabbing and surrounding you, ect.. And there are some I wasn't even aware of like the Premium Adventure lock.. Very ironic for this game specifically where you're spoiled for content, but aren't allowed to properly keep it... I also really appreciate the combat comparison to 4. (I had a feel those Twitter polls would lead to something) I just grew so attached to the tight, fast paced combat of 4, that I knew the jump to 5 would be slightly difficult to attach, but.. it's honestly just such a painful downgrade for me.. Kiryu and Saejima not as much, it's more just the engine probably. But Akiyama is such a bizarre change to me, he ended up becoming my least favourite character to play as in the game. (Even Shinada I was able to find some enjoyment in.) Since you asked how many times I accidentally did that weird accidental flip move; EVERY SINGLE ENEMY, I'm not kidding, it happened at least once each encounter, I eventually just gave up and just accepted not having any control over him. Nothing against people that still enjoy him in 5 obviously, but he was easily my least favourite part of the game, which I never would've expected coming after 4... On a positive light, I think this games' biggest saving grace is the vast amount of exploration and side content. (I hate to admit how much I returned to the dance rivalries just to listen to those specific songs) This is easily where I also believe the writing gets really good and shines proper. I can see a lot of the care the devs put into the world of Yakuza 5! It's just a shame it ended up in kind of a mess I suppose hahah.

Thanks for this. Everything you said resonates with what I've been feeling about the game ever since I completed it. Man, why did they need to make the dialogue such a chore with that "new" style of in-game cutscene? Also, about Akiyama not having a side story, I always thought it would have to do with Elise, but they couldn't come up with anything much different from what they did in Yakuza 4, where you have to scout the hostesses and train them, so they just made that "event" in which you have to reunite all of them in there so the final one may become available.

Funny thing is that the villain of this game has a point, most of the MCs are or were connected to a criminal organization, it's disgusting that they're talking about dreams, they destroyed other people's dreams in their long careers and ended many lives too, so, still believing in things like dreams is naive...

Yakuza 5 has some of the highest highs and the lowest lows for me. Its sheer size alone is impressive. I went from "oh cool, this game is pretty big," to "GOODNESS GRACIOUS ALIVE, THIS GAME IS TOO BIG!" I love the new cities but they really bloat the game. I think game's size and length hurts the story too. I think it drags at many points, especially Saejima's part. It took 50 hours to complete the story with the minimum amount of side content done. I beat Yakuza 3 and 4 within that time. Other than that, I think Yakuza 5 is great. It's bloated but it gave us five cities to explore, massive gameplay improvements over Yakuza 4, great boss fights, and a top tier ost.

The most annoying thing about this segment (40:05) is that the animation is very elablorate and cool that it should have been a heat move. Heat move would at least make those weapon revelation worth getting.
