Sori's right. Devin has had a lot of issues in his life and puts them into his songs...the pain! But, he's a lot better than he used to be and has been happily married for many years. Really funny guy too and the most generous rockstar to fans I've ever seen. Watch any of his interviews or industry shows where he plays for and interacts with fans.

I think for a more complete understanding of his complex headspace would be for you two to react to Devin Townsend - “Deconstruction” and then “Fly” right after. He wrote both those songs at the same time. One reason Devin is so accessible for me is that he’s completely honest and vulnerable to the complex nuances of the human condition. He doesn’t project a facade, it’s real. And it definitely helps that he’s the true musical genius of this generation. :)

Check out Strapping Young Lad for a troubled Devin! :D Man has gone through mental torture over the years but is in an awesome place now (at least publicly). He can write and play extremely complex music, try something off the album Deconstruction like the song Deconstruction

I think what Vin MAY not get about certain types of music is when the music is almost solely about conveying emotion or a certain state of mind. And Devin Townsend... all of his music is about trying to convey emotion and seeing certain states of mind. And that doesn't always require a Virtuoso solo or even just an extremely impassioned one. It's Why do you even need that at all? Why even a solo? Why complexity? Why does music have to meet a certain standard of musicianship in order to be a good or even a great song? As long as it sounds good! As long as it conveys meanings and emotion, who cares? It Doesn't have Poe like prose? It Doesn't have to have Beethoven like intricacies and complexity. Hell if that was what made Metal awesome then there would be no Metal at all, because Metal is based off of Rock and Rock is based off of the Blues. And the Blues ain't about complexity. Sure Metal has grown more complex than that in many ways, but why does it HAVE to be that way?
@Galacticat_
@Galacticat_ 6 жыл бұрын
James McClellan well said. Complexity can be great in some music but i would take emotion any day. David Gilmour from Pink Floyd is a prime example. His playing isn't very complex but his solos convey so much emotion and passion, and on the other side, bands like Dream Theater who are very complex make boring music IMO.

Well said, James. It did hurt to hear Vin say that to him this was not "memorable and special" but the fact is music just like art is simply the expression from an artist and this finds resonance in an audience, it connects with them. Music is always about conveying emotions and it can be expressed in a complex arrangement or an atmospheric feel to the music. Personally, I think Dev is one of the greatest rock musicians of our time.

I think the "hooray for you" is also selfdepricating. She is a sungoddess who saves him, but he thinks so low of himself that to him it feels like a wasted effort, so it's a cynical " well hooray for you". I get the sense that Devin is a very humble person due to his struggles with mental health. He sees life for what it is, all the pain is as much a part of life as all the love. It's all a jumble of loneliness and togetherness, happyness and sadness, love and hate, pleasure and pain. His songs are emotionally complex because they don't just focus on one of those aspects, but instead tries to encompass the whole spectrum that takes place "in the heat of the moment" :)

VinAnd Sori I love the video again. Hey are you going to react to Gene Hoglan's drum play through of Strapping Young Lad's "Skeksis". I know that you guys will listen to my humble plea eventually. I can't get over the fact that Gene doesn't get the recognition that he deserves in terms of his music contributions. His drumming is very tight hence his nickname the "Atomic Clock". One has to realize the implication of his nickname. The atomic clock is literally the world clock. So to say that about Gene he has to be a musician first and foremost. His mind is always focused on the guitar and bass first and foremost. Gene's style is very distinctive just as Sori mentioned about Devin. When I say distinctive style I mean certain rhythms and sound effects he uses. He uses a deep snare drum that is 14 inches in diameter by 8 inches deep. That is an extremely deep snare drum. He uses a metal snare drum which has more projection than wood drums. Just listen to his drumming with headphones on and you will see what I mean. The snare drum that Gene plays was one he bought in England back in the 1980's. He goes to prove that instruments if they are top quality can stand the test of time. His snare drum sounds just as good today as it did the day he bought it. In fact the old saying is true that some things get better with time and his drumming is proof of that. Gene's evolution as a musician is evident throughout the decades he has played. Oh and in fact VinAnd Sori you might be interested to know that Gene played drums with literal bones at one point in his career. He was 400 pounds about 8 years ago and he lost 140 pounds and he is an inspiration beyond just drumming. Gene is very motivational and professional. Gene has a level of integrity that few people possess. In fact Fear Factory kicked Gene out of the band once he figured out they replaced him with a drum machine. Rather than quit he just pushed forward and continues to kick ass. I don't know if VinAnd Sori will ever react to Gene's drum play through of Strapping Young Lad's "Skeksis". I have faith that one day you guys will watch his drumming. Keep up the awesome work and never quit.

This concert was good enough that I ordered it on Blu-Ray from Amazon. I've already watched it 3 times, and it will continue to be watched for a long time in the future. The first half is a hilarious metal opera featuring puppets. The second half is where this song comes from, and is basically a greatest hits of his songs in this particular band (prior to his most recent album).

Devy is just... Man I don't even know how to describe him, he transcends the art form of music. This is one of my favourite performances by him, not just because the song is great, but there's a reason people prefer this live version over the album version, and I think this may actually be true for almost all his music. You can see the emotions the song is meant to portray in his body language. Unlike the vast majority of performances for other musicians, you can really see the authenticity of his writing in so many aspects. Sounds, lyrics and body language. I just love that man so much.

About "Main Stage" - Devin does this thing where as soon as he approaches 'mainstream' he burns it to the ground - and goes another direction. see the termination of SYL and recently the DTP. He doesn't want to be his own 'messiah' - which points to perhaps the vicious one being Devin's narcissism and his circular relationship with himself.

I discovered you just two days ago with the The Unforgiven video, but I must say yours quickly became only the second reaction channel I deem worth watching every video of, alongside Lost in Vegas. I find myself puzzled and intrigued by some of your ratings (and by Vin's casual use of Arabic phrases like "Subhanallah" haha--not used to hearing it from Americans) so I'm really looking forward to getting to know you better. I expect your channel to grow really fast, and soon, so I wanted to say hi before it becomes more and more unlikely to be seen by you among a thousand other comments. Cheers and love from Istanbul! Oh, by the way, I get what Vin meant by "you could not hear something like this from Metallica" and it's mostly true, but it's not _entirely_ true. Coincidentally, _just_ before Vin said that, I was thinking about how the atmosphere and themes of this song loosely reminded me of Metallica's _The Outlaw Torn_ , which is about "losing someone and waiting for a replacement that never comes" (in Hetfield's words). It's a wonderful, relatively unknown Metallica epic with an unusually naked feel, both lyrically and musically, so t'd be great to see you react to it some time.

Devin Townsend is a Tortured virtuoso on guitar, he can shred but he doesnt really care for it. He started in a band with Steve VAi who is world reknown for his virtuosity. The dude never even took vocal lessons and 25yrs later his voice is unmatchable live. The best part about him is if he wasnt in a band he could be a great stand up comic, Thats a common denominator between a musician and and a comic, they pull from the pain to create an artistic vision. BTW Lazarus by Porcupine Tree is a beautiful song not saying to react but give it a listen. Take care guys

After listening to you discuss, I think maybe the song is about his wife's wanting to help him through his troubles (he was diagnosed with bi-polar before this time, and took a lot of drugs too, though he's been clean since around 2007ish), and him not wanting to recieve that help because of the pain he would have to go through in order to fix his life up? At the end, when he gives in to the pain, perhaps that's him accepting the help he needs. At the start of the song, the 'hooray for you' is sarcastic, because perhaps he doesn't think he needs or wants help. A complete guess really, but that idea formed as I was listening to you discuss.

However, this song is probably not about some tour girl. it’s written long ago, and he said in concert, his marriage is stable like more than 20 years. Personally I think this song is like some poem of “first love”, only a sensitive young man, who’s insecure but has a strong personality could feel that way. Musically, my opinion is Devin and Tool are on the same level. Only they, when people hear them, would think they’re of their own genre. Their music are not so “hand demanding”, but all the “simple” notes are used perfectly and unique, that’s a whole different level, it takes more than handworks. trust me they’re all capable of making songs of complexity with ease. At first period wenn you listen to metal music, you can be spoiled by the much longer much more constructed songs, which has more layers and epicness . But the more you listen the more you’ll discover that their songs are actually not that of musicianship . Because most of them are not progressing, they are putting complex things together in a simple way. Devin Townsend, Porcupine Tree and Tool are the type of rock musicians, when you think all metal or rock are boring, they are still there towering.Because they have not only fundamental musical skills, but also the understanding of art and know how to deep to the subconscious of themselves to find the source of making art like true artists

Devin Townsend is just a great live performer. Always top notch live. Especially if you ever get to see him in a smaller venue. Sound is just so immersive. Was just reading some interesting stuff about him too, with his struggles with being bi-polar. Good intuition picking up on something underlying there. You guys should consider reacting to some Chris Cornell acoustic covers at some point. Was just listening to his cover of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean...better than the original. His spin on it with his voice... gah...

I was never a big Soundgarden fan but Chris Cornell is awesome as hell. Audiosoave is where his vocals shine through the most I think. But first, I’m still waiting to here Rapture by Hurt. They actually have a live acoustic version of that dang too where the emotion is pretty breathtaking. But I recommend you start with the studio version.

Audioslave is good, but for me, Badmotorfinger and Superunknown are two albums that are a notch higher than anything else Chris Cornell participated in. Vocally, his Temple of the Dog side project is probably the height of his vocal prowess in my opinion. So soulful and emotive.

I do not know if this can help you analyze the lyrics but: Devin Townsend is bipolar. I am bipolar too. In my relationships, the woman I love must undergo my mood changes. one day she is my goddess, then suddenly something happens and I feel like I do not love her anymore, that our relationship will stop, then I'm lost, then love comes back even stronger ... a cycle that does not stop. And we can say very intense things as much in love as in hate ... just in the heat of the moment ... I think that the song is a kind of notice on how it works ... for the woman he love. sorry for my english !^^

Gabriel Cabana Viva Quebec! I was born in northern Wisconsin, we're basically the USA's Quebec, except we kinda dropped the use of the French language in favor of sprechen sie Deutsche when German's basically took over the entire state 100 years ago. Quite a lot of my relatives speak French, the rest of my family speak German--not that well, and in our stupid accent. Anyways... I have many relatives in Quebec, and I lived in Alexandria Bay, NY, for years; Quebec City is my home away from home. Much love from Milwaukee.

17:30 if she is a sun goddess, I think the clouds are a representation of what keeps him from her, just like the clouds keep you from seeing the sun. In this instance “the Greyhound home” or his tour bus. He feels like he has to go on tour to support his family and make his fans happy but that keeps him away from her. So now he has to choose between her and touring and the “grey lines blur”, making it harder and harder to decide between what’s right and what’s wrong.

Devin Townsend talks a lot about creating a "wall of sound" when he produces music. "Kingdom" is probably a good example of this effect, or "Juular". He layers instruments to build a specific effect that feels like you're being hit by a hurricane, or perhaps a train (you'll get the reference if you watch the official video for Juular). Oh, and even though I'm a big Devon Townsend fan, I'm with Vin on this one as to the score. Personally, I would give this song at most an eight out of ten...it's an amazing live performance and very moving lyrically, but something about the middle part always feels a bit too slow and plodding to me with the repeating guitar riff, like I'm waiting for something interesting musically to happen that never quite arrives.

Some epic music I would highly recommend to you guys would be Tesseract. "Cages" or "Eclipse" would be my picks for a good idea of what they are about but those two tracks do feature different vocalists just to point out. Would also highly recommend Skyharbor because again I think you guys would dig their style. Would recommend "Miracle" or "Evolution". Both bands have elements of rock/metal but are also full of inspiring & uplifting riffs, ambience and awesome grooves.

Devin has talked in a number of interviews over the last few years about falling into the rock star lifestyle early in his career (he started touring with Steve Vai when he was only 19), including partaking in a fair bit of sex and drugs, and he is open about his growth as an adult in no longer falling into those self-destructive behaviours. Especially after the birth of his son. So even though it's probably true that he has been with his wife for 20+ years, I think it's likely from the things he's let out that it hasn't always been easy, or maybe they dabbled with an open relationship for a time, etc. I'm honestly not too interested in the details of all this, because that's his private life, but I always think a bit along those lines when I hear this song. Especially since it's called "Deadhead", which when you think about it is an extremely strange title considering the lyrics. It makes some sense if the lyrics reference his "Deadhead" days early in his career, and the problems his behaviours on tour ("the Greyhound home") caused him emotionally and with relationships in general (not just his wife).

Dev's quite a solved up person nowadays, but he once was a really disturbed and confused person that endured through bipolar disorder. I really can hear this song, The Death Of Music and Suicide. Those are 3 immensely beautiful songs, but so emotive, sad and exposing that they end up being a bit too much for me.

IIRC, this song in particular (and maybe even the album as a whole) was about Devin's love for his wife. My interpretation has always been that he's trying to tell Tracy how much he loves her, despite his faults and all the things he might do to hurt her. "The rain it comes, the rain it blurs the grey line" would refer to the bad things that Devin has done to upset Tracy, whether that be drugs, or infidelity while touring, or other things (we might never know). These things make Tracy upset. "Hurt me, I can take it" alludes to how he's ready to be chastised because he knows he fucked up and he knows he's upsetting her. To me it sounds like he knows what he's doing is wrong and he doesn't feel that he's worthy of her love, but he clings to it because he needs it more than the alcohol/drugs/women/whatever he's doing that's wrong. He loves her immensely, and regrets his faults so deeply. He can see how he's a monster and he's hurting her, and he's begging her to save him, because she's his "sun goddess" and he believes she can bring out the good in him that she stays with him for. He was in a really deep depressive rut in his life at this point, getting tired of Strapping Young Lad and felt like he was almost done with all that negative emotion which made him start SYL in the first place. Not long after this album (Accelerated Evolution), Dev took a long break to work on his home life. He began his sobriety, quit SYL and became a father. Even now in his more recent music, you can hear that he's always trying to figure out where he is in life and deconstruct (hehe) his emotions, but it definitely seems like his relationship with Tracy is still going very strong, and he's worked on himself to be a better husband and father.

Hey guys, I've been watching some of your videos, and have enjoyed your reviews. Specifically what hooked me was your lyrical breakdown of Cradle of Filth's - Her Ghost in the Fog. I went to church as a kid and in to my early teens, but pretty much fell out of religion because of the judgemental atmospheres of the different churches that I went to. I've been seeing you two reacting to metal quite a bit and thought you'd guys would like something. I won't tell you guys much about it, but would like to hear your thoughts on it, hopefully doing a reaction video on it. The song is Soli Deo Gloria, by Woe of Tyrants.

Thank you for reacting to Deadhead. Next on the Devin request is "The Death Of Music" Live at Royal Albert Hall. But please do not overlook the trilogy of songs that TDoM is linked with including Funeral & Bastard. There is youtube video that has all three song is succession live if you are game? In regards to your underground show, I would recommend an project group called Ayreon. Please react to the song The Day That The World Breaks Down as this best represents what Ayreon is all about. This group is led by Arjen Luccasen who writes, performs, records his own music with the assistance of top class, world renowned vocalists and musicians. Just to give you some perspective, here are the artists that feature on this song and latest album... Vocalists Mike Mills (Toehider) as TH-1 James LaBrie (Dream Theater) as The Historian Tommy Karevik (Kamelot, Seventh Wonder) as The Opposition Leader Tommy Rogers (Between the Buried and Me) as The Chemist Simone Simons (Epica) as The Counselor Nils K. Rue (Pagan's Mind) as The Prophet Tobias Sammet (Edguy, Avantasia) as The Captain Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian) as The Astronomer Russell Allen (Symphony X) as The President Michael Eriksen (Circus Maximus) as The Diplomat Floor Jansen (Nightwish, ex-After Forever, ex-ReVamp) as The Biologist Will Shaw (Heir Apparent), Wilmer Waarbroek, Jan Willem Ketelaars, and Lisette van den Berg (Scarlet Stories) as The Ship's Crew[1] Zaher Zorgati (Myrath) as The Preacher1 Instrumentalists Joost van den Broek (ex-After Forever) - grand piano and electric piano Mark Kelly (Marillion) - synthesizer solo[24] on "The Dream Dissolves" Maaike Peterse (Kingfisher Sky) - cello Paul Gilbert (Mr. Big, Racer X) - guitar solo on "Star of Sirrah"[25] Guthrie Govan (The Aristocrats, ex-Asia) - guitar solo on "Planet Y Is Alive!"[26] Marcel Coenen (Sun Caged) - guitar solo on "The Dream Dissolves"[27] Ed Warby - drums Ben Mathot - violin Jeroen Goossens (ex-Pater Moeskroen) - flute, wind instruments Arjen Anthony Lucassen - electric and acoustic guitars, bass guitar, mandolin, synthesizers, Hammond, Solina Strings, all other instruments

Devin wrote this song not too long after he was released from a mental institution and diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He said he was in Korea when he had a moment of clarity regarding their relationship and how much shit he put his wife through over the years, that was when he wrote this song. The realization of the difference between lust and love coupled with the realization that he couldn't think of a reason for why she should stay with him is what fuels it. On top of that, Devin was in a hardcore metal band at the time and was lying to himself that he still wanted to be that crazy person, so his wife was his only real connection outside of that persona. I've never heard such a desperate song in my life, yet it manages to be somehow romantic too. Anyway, loved your discussion on it.
