It's good to know I've done a lot of this naturally most of my music career. It might help that I played in the bass ckef in band, played a lot of sports, and joined the army so marching in time was a big deal. These videos are EXCELLENT

Scott, this is actually a really important lesson which I've seen NO ONE teach before. (It's also one of my little secrets of being a wanted bass player.) Whenever playing a jazz tune which ends with the same chord as the progression begins, it's sometimes tricky/necessary for me to do all the counting to make sure the band stays together. Cantaloupe Island is a simplified example of this kind of progression which everyone has probably mastered, but Fancy Free by Grant Green is a better example - especially during the solo sections. I'll add little fills or walk-up transitions to cue the band that the next chord change is finally coming. Good stuff!

That was a cool lesson. Most teachers would envy being able to groovin' at the black board. Works perfect using the technology. The thing with bass is that they can't make errors. Guitar & keyboard can choose to not play - um, where am I? but the bass can't be missing out. It was useful to point this out. There should be a term for 4, I mean how useful it the term Bar. And I want a bass pad on my instrument above the E-string with a low D. When you're going down D-A-F#-(low D) It's there when you need it. Slap that thing. Thanks for the good video.

Scott. I have a question. In regards to the A7 substitution on the last bar of the group of 4, could you use the relative major chord (F7) to the Dm7 as another example before leading to the next Dm7 group of 4 bars? Otherwise Love this video. Thank you.
@soeffingwhat8 жыл бұрын
I've done that a few times so I'd say yes you could. I think in this video its just a bit easier to use the higher A7 as its a 5th, for bassists who are really only starting with the theories of getting a groove down, so to speak.
@TheMemo659 Жыл бұрын
I've used fill rotations to keep count for a VERY long time. Sometimes my band relies on those, sometimes I'm the only one who notices them.

Man, u get the best p bass tone. There is something to it that sets it apart. I guess it's a combo of the gear and the hands. It's my favorite p bass tone out there. It's just has a good earthy, warm, wood like tone to it. U know u gotta good sound going when someone has to pull adjectives out of their ass to describe it lol

Hello everyone. I've started playing the bass 8 months ago or so. I've been only learning how to play songs so far, placticing like crazy, I'd say my technique is decent, but I'm not sure what and where I should learn everything else. I don't know what notes I'm playing, I don't know...well...anything, really. What should I be learning and why? I'd apreciate any help, thanks :)

Scott. 5th degree of Dm7 is Am7, not A7 i think... am I right? Anyway great lesson! thx
@whatsmyname20709 жыл бұрын
+Tomek You are right, if you are going directly by the modes, but normally when you substitute a chord in you will usually use the Dominate 7 chord. You see it a lot in music actually. The reason why you use the Dom7 chord is because it is wanting to go back the I one chord whether it is Minor or Major. Hope this helps a little! (:

Scott you are always confused explaining writing music . 4/4 means 4 beats per bar ... 4 bars per measure , so you are counting 4 measures . ... both sides of the pond use the same writing (bars) AND (measures) . You often say what we call measures , you call bars . Not actually . Measures are groupings of bars . 7/8 ... 7 beats per bar , 8 bars per measure .
