Scott, I don't know if you were aware, the Markbass instrument range has been significantly increased with the recent introduction of the "Gloxy" range. The Gloxy is available in both 4 and 5 string versions, has most of the features of the JP models, including the same body/neck/pickup style, the same fabulous preamp (with no gain change when switching between active/passive!), but at a considerably more affordable price. The perfect function band bass, versatile for all the genres we all have to cover, and won't break the bank!

P body + Jazzy MB pickups, great preamp (unique in the market) and great build quality, gig bag included, all less priced than a fairly overpriced mexican Fender. Asian assembly, pickup and electronics Made in Italy, and last but not the least: Markbass factory controlled one piece by one piece before delivering. Italians do it better :)))

I bought a Markbass GV couple weeks ago for £599. Larger pole pieces are very hot but really adds to the tone. Needs a setup but still sounds great out the box. 5 string is great, low B isn’t too loose sounding/playing which you can get sometimes. It’s much brighter sounding than my Fender AM Elite Jazz 4 also!

Scott, just wondering when you get these new basses to demo for us, how much time do you spend on setting up to your liking?

GREAT question, Jason! Unfortunately, I spend zeroooo time setting them up (my schedule is jam packed with SBL stuff that gone are the days I have time to fiddle around setting up basses… although I wish I did, lol), fortunately they all come set up pretty well.

Can’t speak for Scott, but I can generally get a nice bass (like pro-level, but not necessarily super high-end boutique stuff) how I want it in a half hour or so. Less nice ones will usually need some fret and nut work, so two or three hours or thereabouts.

By the way, the tone control is also a switch. When you pull it out, the bass switches from active to passive, as if it was a Fender jazz bass. You'll be surprised how good the bass sounds in passive mode.

If you get the possibility to find and buy a Squire jazz bass standard 2007 MI Indonesia for about 150-200 euros, do buy it, with only some adjustments and setting them up, it sounds and plays killer.

What a beauty! PBass with JBass pickups!!! Boom! Mind blown! Snap, pop, and thumps!
@Elektronijaenis2 жыл бұрын
After starting to play bass I bought a cheap Tokai J-bass and at first the two volumes did seem to add versatility... However pretty soon I found out that with a band it's just not handy. Sometimes I need to fade a note out (typically at the end of the song) and that's somewhat annoying with the two volumes. And after that the carefully crafted settings are lost. The settings also get lost when I want to mute the instrument by turning the volume all the way down. I also realized that the subtle tonal differences created with the two volumes gets easily lost under the other instruments. After a while I changed one of the pots to a 3-way pickup selector switch and wired the rest of the pots as master volime and master tone... Oh... And then changed one of the pots for a push pull one and wired it so that puulling it up puts the picups in series (that one makes a pretty big difference). I mostly use both pickups in parallel and tone all the way up though.

I’m with you, two volumes is VASTLY better and easier to use than a pan pot. I’ll never understand why some prefer a pan.
@johnsausage10 ай бұрын
How do you fade out or do a tremolo effect with the knobs when you use both pickups? Doesn't work at all :D. That's why I prefer pan :D
@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney10 ай бұрын
@@johnsausage I don't, haha! I suppose if I did, I'd find a way. A volume pedal, I'm sure, would work just as well (likely better). Honestly, my personal preference is single volume, single tone (or EQ if active), and a selector switch like my Ernie Ball Music Man Sterlings have, which is how I also wired my P/J partscaster Warmoth Jazz basses (fretted and fretless, both have '88 Japanese Jazz Bass Special necks with an oil finish and flame maple over alder Warmoth Dinky J bodies likewise oil finished. I defretted the fretless and inlaid maple fretlines, and they both have EMG GZR P/J pickups and a rotary selector switch). I like things pretty simple, and I'm a little OCD, so I like knowing exactly how much of one pickup or another I'm blending in. With a switch, it's 100%, and I can adjust the tone with attack, with two volumes, it's a repeatable set quantity and I can REALLY fine tune it (though I wouldn't find it necessary very often). I will say that I once had a Fernandes bass that I strung and tuned B-D for a heavy rock band I was in, I put EMGs in it and their factory wiring had a pan pot. I didn't bother cutting their harness up since it was a 3- or 4- song bass and I didn't care enough, and it was REALLY easy to just tweak on the fly for any weird room sounds I didn't like without having to mess with my amp EQ or anything, just favoring one pickup more than another would usually do the trick. In that way, I can't deny its usefulness.

What about their 2x10 bass cabs or just 2x10 bass cabs in general. I personally am considering a downsize to that configuration paired with one of these new super lightweight bass heads. Using just a single 2x10 for smaller gigs and chaining both 2x10’s as necessary. Your thoughts?

I have never liked the two volume controls on a J bass. I found it difficult to keep the same tone in the middle of playing a song, because I needed change the over all volume of the bass instead of each pick up. Maybe I'm crazy, but I would add a master volume knob controlling both pick up. I guess I could have used the master volume control on the amp head. Hmmm

It's pretty hard to judge the looks of the instrument with such a heavy color correction. May be it would be beneficial to lay back with Bayesque Teal&Orange galore at least for reviews, don't you think?
@ActionJotaPe2 жыл бұрын
This only affects the color of the bass and nothing else regarding the looks of it, i’m sure Scott just prefers to keep some aesthetic consistency in the colors regarding his videos whether it’s a review or a more standard lesson, in the end for this kind of video all that really matters is getting a clean and defined sound out of the bass and showing the shape clearly, everything else is just a technicality

For guys like my self who will have basses that cost less than a set of expensive strings ,, we ask ,, or say, when you review a bass, what size are the strings ? you could review "any" bass & it might sound awesome with 35s or less not bad with 40s not great with 45s un playable with 50s plus maybe the other way round ,, who knows ? perhaps you could do a video mking it clear that All reviews are with standard "scotts size strings" (nickle or steel ) then we will know the "slap value & finger speed" for sure it could also rabbit hole into videos on string size & how super heavyweight 50s plus bass players play the bass totally different to those on 35s or less can size matter ,, ? i was told its "fexible" to each jam & what ever suits you best at each point ,, i have yet to try super monster Godziller 50s & above ,, but want to cheers scott

Hey Scott, try the Charvel Pro-Mod San Dimas JJV. It’s a P bass body with Jazz pickups, thin neck that’s roasted maple with a licensed Fender P-Bass headstock (since Fender owns Charvel). It runs around $1,000. It’s a 5 string, hence the name JJV, but they make a 4 string version but it’s a PJ configuration. I have the JJV and love it, but sadly there’s few KZbin videos of it.
