Just had an idea for a new bass series of lessons. What if you go through songs that are popular in covers bands, and make up cool runs, fills that will work in that song, and you can teach why it works, scales, cord tones used etc. Could be cool for new guys to see how the pros create riffs and apply them to songs we already play.

Great video! As a new (returning to bass after 30+ yrs) player, I would really love to see a short video going in to a bit more detail about that rhythm counting method Scott touched on. Hitting on the upbeat (syncopation) is a challenge for me to wrap my head around in exercises. I can only do it by listening to the song/riff and just copying it until I’ve got the feel. I feel that if I could practice that kind of exercise independent of playing a song, it would go a king way in helping me “own” syncopation better.

Re: "Flashlight", I'm afraid I'm gonna be "that guy", but only because it's my favorite song by one of my favorite groups. The main groove isn't short-long -- all the notes are short/staccato (with obvious ad-lib exceptions). As Ian rightly pointed out, the space between notes has so much to do with the funkiness, and you can clearly hear Bernie playing those 8th-notes staccato. It'll sound funkier if you really articulate those, and it helps create greater contrast for when you play those legato ad-libs. Remember, you wanna be Starchild, not Sir Nose! 😁
