Gouche said that when he realized that many of the Gospel songs he was playing on were in keys like D and Db, he just decided that tuning down a whole step was the way to get the appropriate low-end rumble he wanted. I believe he started tuning down around 1980’ish.

"Overplaying"!?! Seeing him rock this out not only makes me feel like Chaka is live, but he also takes me to places the bass only goes in the hands of the masters, which is "anywhere they want"! I am awestruck every time I watch this!

@josephnewbern2717
@josephnewbern2717 2 жыл бұрын
@@gagslovedotcom I suggest that Chaka was probably cool with it, because he helped accent her live sound. All those notes and he still supported her and put HER front and center. That's apex musicianship IMHO. Seeing and hearing him demonstrate virtuosity here does prompt "A different way of thinking about your bass playing..." for me. Besides, who decides what "overplaying" is? Ear of the beholder, I guess.🙂

@prestonthompson2789
@prestonthompson2789 5 ай бұрын
Overplaying? As a longtime musician, l've experienced situations of musicians "overplaying" or doing too much accenting where it wasn't needed or being too loud and not blending with the other instruments or the vocalists, and you can tell as that instrument / musician stands out like a sore thumb, but I've also experienced situations of "under" playing. Mr. Gouche gives a fantastic example of what l call enhanced playing, making the song richer, fuller, more colorful. This type of playing inspires you to take your bass playing to another level even if you just work on 25% more of what he's doing. I've heard these songs of Chaka's for years, but this arrangement gives a whole new musical high, and isn't that what we want from music? Not just "butter notes" as Miles Davis wouls say. Push yourself to another level. Nothing to be afraid of...

Let me just say this. As a novice, Andre's clear love for playing truly inspires me. When I first started playing, I was able to keep the birds off my lawn and tick off my neighbors simultaneously (Not where you want to be OR stay). I've gotten to the point now where people can recognize what I'm doing and can appreciate that I'm keeping tempo and getting a lil' jiggy with it. When I watch him immersed in his craft, I smile. Why? Because I get it. I'm nowhere near the solar system in which he plays, but I enjoy what I'm playing and hearing. You only get that from scaring birds and p*ssing off people. The key is to stick with it. In time, you're recognize that look on his face. Thanks Andre.

One time I was heading to a drum shed with my bros and I listened to this video on the way up. When I got there, they started one groove on a 7/8 timing and I rode the groove and chopped instinctively because I was singing a hybrid bassline from what I heard him playing on the way up! Sometimes I wish people could truly know how much their talent has changed our lives. The first time I heard him do the pentatonic run @6:22 I was like 18, went and picked up a bass and didnt put it down until I had that down Haha. Scott you should do something with Maurice Fitzgerald, another gospel legend for his work with Fred Hammond!! Great stuff! Love the content bro! He's so connected with the music. Everything he plays just sounds right! I can imagine him playing exactly that for a live show and most of the crowd wouldn't fully appreciate it. But on a KZbin bass channel, it gets the praise it deserves. Cheers Andrew and cheers Scott for delivering again! :)

Respect to a man that deserves it. Had the pleasure of spending some time with Mr. Gouche at the NRG studio in North Hollywood a few years ago. What a great depth of understanding about bass and music in general. A real gentleman.

Here in Charleston, SC, we have a mind blowing pool of world class musicians that just fly under the radar. “Oh yeah, so and so has been touring with (massive pop group here) playing (instrument here) for years. A dear friend of mine whose jazz orchestra I mix was just reeling off the names of some of the KIDS of these legendary local guys who were making good. Then there the gospel gigs I do and the musicians from those bands playing in other bands out of church. No bullshit, this guy is mind blowing, but I know about five local gospel guys that play like that all the time and every time I just stand there, push the bass a bit, and my jaw is just on the ground. I’ve always felt that method of percussive and syncopated and rearranging the bass parts of a song is just musical buttery syrup. Just sweet and tasty. Y’all are rolling your eyes but I don’t care. These local church guys are bass monsters.

@nemesisbass2133 he did bass cover on the original track so he is not communicating with the drummer that played in the song. one of the abilities of a good musician is the ability to play for the other guys u playing with. in this case, he is playing with those who played the track despite not being with them

Fantastic! This is the clearest version of him jamming these tunes. Can’t be duplicated. I’m not sure it can even be learned, but it’s so cool to hear all that he’s doing. Chops. Imagination. And no matter how far out he’s flying his kite-he’s right there on the hits. Never rushed and with a nice full tone. Thanks for posting SBL.
