To those moaning about price you get what you pay for. There are so many ways to buy these boots discounted. I have just bought a pair of Pascal 1460s for £100 (retail around £160). I have also bought some 40 year old Oxblood 1460s for £40 (in perfect condition, just need a feed) and am repairing a pair of perfect 1460s in black I bought for £15.00 off eBay. If you want really good boots, as someone on here has suggested, go down the route of Church's prior to the brand being sold to PRADA - great boots which WILL last a lifetime - every 3 years or so send them to 'The Shoe Healer' in Doncaster for a resole/repair. Same with Trickers - wonderful boots. Loake - yup, I have a few but prefer their shoes, preferably in suede. I have 8 pairs of DMs, have just sourced 2 pairs for my girlfriend (who loves them) and have just sourced 3 pairs for her daughter - amazing boots if looked after but they are not a patch on the others I mentioned. Old Church's are simply amazing.

Before lockdown I went to the doc store in Westfields (London) and picked out a pair of Chelsea boots. When I got home I put them on, and started realising something wasn’t right. Something was different from one boot to the other. The leather was slightly different, the stitching... and then the biggest thing- The insole was totally different from one boot to the other, in shape and material. That’s when I realised one boot was made in Taiwan, the other in China! I took the, back to the store, and they acted like it happens all the time. Found me a matching Taiwanese left to match the right one I had, and that was that. Very weird and disappointing experience.

I doubt it was made in Taiwan. Taiwan's labour cost is triple the cost compare to south east Asia. After all, Taiwan is a country specialising in high tech OEMs such as computers and semiconductors, fashion goods in Taiwan are also outsourced to China due to cost. Doc Martens only outsourced to China/Vietnam/Bangladesh and Thailand. Perhaps one of your pairs was made in Thailand?

Doc Martens lost me as a customer after they moved the majority of their manufacturing to China. The Chinese boots were constructed differently enough that they peeled skin off of my ankle over the course of a work day. That was enough to show me that they no longer respect their customers. I'm a dedicated fan of Solovair now.

FYI - before you dump Dm's, you simply have to try the Ripple/Ziggy sole. The recent Horween MIE Ripples are excellent. The soles don't wear out as quickly as the normal DM sole and perform very much like my Red Wing wedge sole (for half the price). During Covid, I'm puttting miles and miles on mine. Highly recommended.

I'm so excited that you review the Horweens. Last Year i was in New York and had them for the first time in my hands and on my feet. Unfortunately way to expensive for me at this time. I will definitly return to your Channel for Updates on these. The interesing thing about them in my opinion is that the leather is probably the only leather dr. martens use which is 100% produced by another company with its own quality standards. Just want to add that the Vintage Made in England Martens i bought in New York do have a way better Quality than the Made in England ones i bought a few years ago in my homecountry Austria. They have changed something. As we now, its still the Quillon Leather but the Quality and the feel is hugely different.

It is very strange that DM have chosen to use that colour stitching when yellow is the colour they have always used. Solovair had to change to the white colour due to being threatened with legal action over the patent. Solovair swap to white and then DM’s use it. Shame on them....they are a shadow of the company they used to be . I am quite disgusted st the prices DM and Solovair charge for their boots now, it’s got silly. £170 for Solovairs and £140-£150 for foreign rubbish DM’s. The UK made DM’s £200......they were an everyday boot and now they are out of the ordinary man’s price range!!

It's a lovely update from Doc. I have loved them for so long, but it is interesting they're not even the highest quality of boots that I own. I can't quit them... My pair of for life have last about 5 years, and I have to wear sparingly because the soles are nearly worn out. I have been tempted to spend way too much for a professional resole.

I lovelovelove the color of that leather. And, yeah! I found my Horween leather 1461 shoes are narrower in the toe area and just more snug in the toe area, in general. But, man, if that leather is not gorgeous. For me, since I'm a leather worker and have been for almost 2 decades, anything leather that enters my home gets conditioned right away. That really helped make the color of the leather pop. When conditioning them, really pay attention to the toe and anywhere that may bend because that's the most susceptible to crack and wear. I want some Horween leather Solovairs!❤

These do actually look more like a real boot than anything else I've seen from them, but to be honest I've mostly written them off as a counterculture fashion statement that doesn't support your feet. If I'm not mistaken this is the same leather used in my Thorogoods that I love so much. I'm pretty sure the deal with Horween leather is simply the quality and the more natural vege-tan process, but visually it's not especially elegant.
@Mkjackary
@Mkjackary 3 жыл бұрын
Horweens most famous leather is their Chromexcel leather, which is chrome tanned. It is more the quality of leather and tanning/oil tanning process that they use combined with their history that make them so famous. Thorogoods use Chromexcel if I'm not mistaken, and these use Dublin which is one of horweens vegtanned leathers. It isn't the most beautiful to start with but the patina that is has when it ages is wonderful and hard to find as consistently outside of horween

I've been wearing a pair of standard Pascals for about 4-5yrs and they've held up surprisingly well. Even the soles! These were made in Thailand. I don't put an especially large number of miles on them, however they've done the distance and more. Pascals are designed as streetwear for casual use to my understanding. I might get a pair of these Horween Pascals. They sound a better buy than the 1460s.

I think Gripfast would be the closest they offer to the original Docs only because the outer stitching actually holds the upper. Solovair is, in fact the closest one can get to the original only because they're available with the split rear and without a steel cap.

Dr Martens went to court to copyright the yellow stiching in the boots. This forced Solovair, who made the original Dr Martens, to switch to a grey/white thread on their boots. I'll just point out that veg tan leather is more environmentally friendly than chrome tanning. Not to mention that chrome tan process uses chromium6, which kills the people who are tanning the leather if they're not using proper protective gear (what are the odds of that happening in the developing world?). Chrome tan can also cause horrific skin reactions in people with sensitive skin.

Just read threw some more comments. Seems to be a lot of disappointments about the souls. I have a few pairs of vintage 80s and 90s docs. On these, yes the souls are better, but not as comfortable to walk on and feel harder, compared to the modern doc martens which is a lot more softer to walk on. Their is also a bex soul on docs, if some feel the original soul too thin. Not saying the modern docs are better, but it is just my experience on it after walking miles in them. ! Another thing i find, moisture collects more inside pvc cells of the soul in the vintage docs then modern docs, what i mean is when your foot gets hot and condensation builds up inside the air cells. The leather is better though in the vintages. 👍

Better off buying some redwings or something of similar quality. But to be honest I’ve never liked docs.

@@lriper4702 because I was curious that they would be any better. They’re not. Solved the bee in my bonnet. Now I know they’re defo not worth the price, even with the good leather. Shouldn’t need to explain that. Simpleton.

Yes, the leather is great, but the sole won't last long.

Horween leather is used in Thorogood and other US made boots. It's actually a very time consuming process to make veg tan leather. Unfortunately the uppers won't be appreciated. The sole will wear with 6 months to a year. So you wont really get that lovely patina. Although you will get to appreciate the break in. Same they didn't provide a better structured sole for this price. Let alone a shank. Even use a black leather true good year welt. I'm not keen in the white stitching. For £239 these are awful. So many US and UK made brands with far superior quality and finish than doc martens. Nothing more than 5 minute fashion

I still don't understand how some of you wear out soles so quickly. Either the sidewalks in England are made of 100 grit sandpaper or you have a very heavy step.

The material they make them out of makes little difference its HOW they make them. Terribly put together, buy something else like Thursday or redwing. The made in England doc martens are no better. Dont do it.

I used to love my DM's but this is taking the piss. £239.? Seriously? Sounds to me like they're just seeing what they can get away with. At this price they're getting into Red Wing territory which are better constructed and longer lasting. DM's have never been anything more than a boot version of a training shoe. Have a look at the website to see what kind of people are wearing them. It's hilarious.
