Back in 2016 a Canada goose crash landed on my balcony. He had a broken wing. I took him to the emergency vet, but could not afford his treatment. They sent him to the Cincinnati zoo for treatment, and gave them my phone number so they could keep me in the loop with how his treatment was going. They called and asked if I wanted to give him a name, and I named him "Oscar" after my grandfather, and went to visit him a few times. After about 6 months he was fully recovered and ready to be released back into the wild. They called and asked if I would like the honor of releasing him, and I happily accepted. Lo and behold, when spring rolled around he returned to my balcony to say hello; and continued to do so every year...until this year. He did not show this year, and I'm so bummed out over it and really worried about him :(

Birds know gratitude, which many humans have left ❤️👍🙂Thanks for helping and rescuing it. And good that the zoo members gave you so much insights , updates and let you still be in contact with goose for 6 months We aren't from Canada, but vets here are not so trained and clever and even not passionate abt their work, amd they don't show same honor and hospitality to their clients as the zoo people shown to you

For anyone wondering, this is called imprinting. It’s something some mammals do, but more famously birds as well, especially ducks and geese. When they’re still little and they’re separated from their mother, they automatically start looking for a “mother figure” or “role model.” Once they choose someone (it can be a person or another animal), they will look up to them, follow them, and might even try to mimic them. Geese are very territorial and possessive, so it’s very likely this goose imprinted on that guy with the black jacket and is protective of him.
@motherlandbot68372 жыл бұрын
Agreed, except that wild geese, unlike ducks and most galliform birds, are biparental. Ganders don't incubate or brood, but fiercely defend their sitting mates, and goslings imprint on and follow both parents.

@@trinitronjonatran That’s literally what I said and what imprinting means. You really thought you were on to something there lmao.
@motherlandbot68372 жыл бұрын
@@trinitronjonatran Because baby geese, ducks, chickens, quail (precocial birds) etc. leave their nest forever within a few hours of hatching, and must bond with their parent very quickly BEFORE they leave. Once this critical bonding period is over, it is much more difficult for them to bond with a substitute, and the bonding process is slower if it occurs at all. Imprinting is a two way (three way in biparental species such as geese and New World quails) process; parental adults bond with their offspring within a brief peruod after hatching. The same holds for mammals such as Impala, Zebras, and Wildebeest, whose babies can stand and then walk and run with their mother shortly after birth. By comparison, altricial birds and most baby mammals are helpless at birth, and remain in a nest for days or weeks, or even months, before they leave. Baby monkeys and apes, unlike most altricial mammals, (including Humans), have the ability to cling to their mothers and other parental adults shortly after birth, enabling said parental adults to carry them about, so very few primates keep their babies in nests. With altricial mammals as with precocial mammals, mothers and other parental adults STILL imprint very quickly on their neonate babies, but the babies imprint slowly and gradually, and can easily bond/imprint over a longer period of time. In conventional farming practice, bull calves of dairy breeds of cattle are taken from their mothers and either killed or raised for veal. If her calf is removed as it is born, and the mother is thus prevented from cleaning off and imprinting on her calf, she will accept its' removal with little ir no observable sense of loss. The exact opposite usually happens if she has a chance to imprint on her calf before it is removed; she will show very obvious and prolonged distress, lowing persistently and searching for her missing baby. You're not a scientist, and science seeks precision and discernible patterns. Not reactive, "what's the difference", or "nobody gives a s*@t" responses!

The geese I have encountered in my life show that geese are not "sheep," in that they are aggressive animals who won't think twice about threatening or attacking other animals or people.

@@proudatheist2042 Nah, they're just making up for their small stature. No other poultry can thrive on grass alone, like sheep can!
@nostalji932 жыл бұрын
@@proudatheist2042 Yes they can be terrotorial and display aggressive behaviour. But they certainly think twice about being agrrssive. I was feeding some egyptian geese with babies today. There are also plenty of cannada geese ( a bigger species) who often charge in pairs at the grown egygptian geese to claim some food for themselves. So I just stepped inbetween. This simple action made them reconsider. Realising they had to go throw me made them think twice and calm down. Don't underestemate their intelligence they certainly can adapt to situations and learn. Like all social animals geese are pretty smart.

One time I was riding my bicycle just after a light snow that melted to a beautiful winter day of sunshine. Roads were clear in the countryside and there were thousands of snow geese picking at the corn stubble in the fields. I stopped to take a couple pics and got attacked by a mob of them. I ran to where I put my bike and used it to ward off one particularly nasty fellow. He had flew up and landed on my shoulders as I ran like a coward. As I kept the bike between him and me, he probably noticed the grape cluster that I was smuggling in my bike tights. Instantly, that bastard reached thru the bike and got me right on the ol' schniggidoitie. He only stopped pulling nd twisting when I let go of the bike and it fell on his back, the bastard. Some guy had stopped his car to watch the drama and almost fell over laughing. My unit was purple and blue for two weeks. I completely understand. Goose has a bond of trust and love with its human, then comes this stranger from nowhere assuming he can act as if that same trusting bond existed. Letting someone touch them is a big thing for a goose. It’s like you don’t just run up to dogs you don’t know and start petting them, you don’t pick up strangers babies outside and start hugging them and you don’t grab attractive women you see outside just because you want to. The goose has integrity; that’s absolutely right 💪👊
