Totally kool that they listened and are working on the instructions. Maybe they'll be updated by the time I get mine. Have been looking to do this to my 735 but the $500+ price point was out of my comfort zone. Thanks for an EXCELLENT tutorial!!!!

Yeah, me too. Been thinking about doing it since before I bought the planer, but the cost was too high until now.

They gave you the thicker nut to protect the threads when you are driving the head in place. great instructional video.

Thanks. Yeah, that's what I figured after I gave it some thought. Makes sense.

Thank you for this. I never realized how complicated this can be, this takes a lot of that away. Enjoyed our phone conversation.

I just installed mine today. took about 3 hrs. Had to open up the hole in the drive pully with a dremel and a cylindrical grinding stone. So far , so good. A lot quieter. No milling marks.

Wow, I didn't have that issue. My key was a little tight, which is why I had to tap it on with the mallet, but I wouldn't have considered removing material.

@@maverickdesignswoodworking Using a stone to take off any burrs on the key would have been ideal

I just got a deal yesterday. 499 for the planer for the acme tool. And I thinking about the fine buy helical soon as I need to replace blades. And the dro from wixie. Or if I find deals i can't pass up.
@maverickdesignswoodworking2 ай бұрын
Wow, you got a great deal on that! Is it new? Depending on how much you plane, that first set of knives will last a good while. I got the 735x, which comes with an extra set of blades, and I haven't used them yet. Thanks for watching!

Just bought the newer Oliver 13in planer with a helical head for $900 model 10045. The cutter head is made in house its no longer the Byrd one
@maverickdesignswoodworking2 ай бұрын
That's a good deal. The one thing that really puts the 735 over others, in my opinion, is the 4 beefy screws it uses to adjust up and down, but if I was looking for a 2 screw model, the Oliver would be up there on my list.

You didn’t grease the bearings… the company video showed him greasing the bearings before putting it back together.

You had me freaking out for a second. I thought you meant he packed the bearings on the new head. I watched the video, and what he did was wipe a thin amount on the ring that the outer bearing race seats into on the planer. Those 2 parts are not meant to move against each other. That's why you have to beat the new head in. It's a close tolerance fit meant to hold it place, not to rotate. That outer race shouldn't move in that ring, only the inner race should move with the shaft, facilitated by the bearings between the races. I suspect that's mostly done to make it easier to get the new one in by providing a little lubrication. They also put a little on the helical gear, which is a good idea. Mine had a good amount inside the gearbox already, so I wasn't overly concerned about it. I'll definitely reach out to them and make sure that application is not critical, as I suspect it isn't. They don't provide or even recommend any specific lube. It's not mentioned at all in the written instructions that come with it. If for some reason it is critical, I'll let you know and make a quick update video. Good eye. Thanks for letting me know.
