Hey Flynndog, thanks for the review, you make some excellent points. One thing, you mentioned that you did the sound tests with the dust collection OFF. My experience is that the moving air from the dust collector over the blades vastly increases the noise levels, the straight knives being by far the worst offenders. For the reduction in noise levels alone, I found the helical cutter heads well worth the extra cost. PS LOVE that tee shirt! :)

Spiral has the helical design, but the blades are still set perpendicular to the cut direction while helical are angled slightly. The difference in helical is supposed to be better slicing action instead of “scooping “. I don’t have a straight blade or spiral to actually do a comparison though
@Shannon-v3r4 ай бұрын
They consider it “spiral style”. It’s not really a spiral or helical. But, and I only have their jointer, but it does a hell of a job on highly figured wood. And I mill a lot of it. If there is tear out, it’s minor and my helical planer gets the rest of it out. I’ve used my jointer a lot, haven’t needed to turn the cutters yet. Thanks for your tests and observations. I have had my eye on the Dewalt 735 for a while now and think it's a reliable, durable, and accurate planer. But the additional cutterhead is cost prohibitive for me. The FindBuy may perform well now, but I wonder how it will fare years from now. I totally agree with you Fred. Time will tell with the FindBuyTool router. I fully intend on doing a follow up on this tool and others in a year or two. I do give you a bit of caution on buying a helical cutterhead and installing it on the 735. It is no easy task, I've done it before and it's very hard to find good instructions on how to do it, and it is very frustrating. Better off in my opinion having installed professionally. But that is obviously more expensive. Thanks so much for watching Fred!

Flynndogg, you made a comment about never having seen the Findbuy planer head locking mechanism. The Dewalt 734 has a similar head locking system. In fact the Findbuy dust collection shute is almost identical to the 734 dust shoot. BTW, did you upgrade a Dewalt 735 AND buy one with the helical head installed?
@FlynndoggWoodwork3 ай бұрын
Great questions and points Scott. You know someone else pointed out that about the 734 as well. I had one for a short period of time (literally 2 days) in my shop and never really got to use it. Long story as to why it was only in my shop for 2 days. Unfortunately I have had two 735s. One of them was related to the 734 I had. There were all kinds of issues i had when I bought a Grizzly helical cutterhead that I installed and I went back and forth with the company. They mad everything right but it was a big hassle. I got the grizzley in the machine but I was never quite pleased with it. A couple of years later after a bunch of belts snapped on it I reached out the Byrd tools and bought one with their shelix cutterheads preinstalled. Runs much smoother and which I would have done that to start off with. Luckily I was able to get some of my money back by selling the planer with the grizzly. Thanks so much for waching!

Snipe can be caused by the feed rollers. As the wood leaves the first roller, there is less pressure on the wood to hold it down on the table. The solution to snipe is: 1. Pull up on the board as it exits the planer. This will help keep the board tight to the table after it exits the first feed roller. 2. Take smaller cuts as you get close to the final thickness dimension. I have a decades old Delta portable planer, purchased when these units first became available, and it cost me over $400. In today's money, that would be equivalent to $600 or more - way more than this unit with the helical cutter head.

Thanks so much for sharing SuperBoppy! Great advice. Pulling out as it exits is something I do as well. It's a great solution! Thanks again, and I appreciate you watching!

I just bought a DeWalt 735 planer from Lowes. It was on sale $100 off and because I am a military retiree, (and tool and die maker retiree) I got another 10% discount. I do plan on buying a helical planer replacement blade in a year or so. Yes, tungsten carbide cutters will definitely leave a better finish. One observation: NEVER LAY YOUR WOOD ON A CONCRETE FLOOR!!!!! WHY>>>>>>>>>>>?????? The concrete floor has lots of grit on the surface. When your wood is lying on the floor, the grit will become embedded in the wood, whether lying on an edge or lying flat. Even though tungsten carbide is very sharp, those little pieces of grit will damage the cutting edge. The floor grit is worse on steel blades. Tungsten carbide is very hard but the sharp edges are brittle.

That's a nice machine with some thoughtful features. Seems like someone actually used it during development. Having the out-feed table drop and smack your knuckles would be a great incentive to add a latch. Hopefully this planer doesn't end up on the next crow eating video.

Thanks for the review. You really should not have the noise level meter on the equipment. The meter will pick up the machine vibrations through the body of the meter. The ideal situation would be to have the meter placed in an area where the operator's head would normally be when operating the machine, The other alternative would be to use the type of noise level meter worn by the operator.

The dB meter sitting/vibrating on the tool is not an accurate measurement of sound/noise level. Put it on a stand a few feet away; like where a person's ears will be and take measurements at several angles around the tool.

We agree, that the pre-installed cutter heads are the easiest, but most costly. Holy cow, we're not going to mess with you after watching you catch that planer in the box. This machine is about the same price as the DeWalt with regular knives. Now, will it last? Our DeWalt has been doing a great job for over a decade; albeit with straight knives. We don't make your kind of money, so we've avoided the helical head upgrade. Chinese, huh? Great video, Bryan. Hey, did you catch a polar bear on vacation? Time to get back to work. Hey, where do you get your walnut, on-line (as we suspect), or a local mill?

Was a great trip! I get all my walnut from a place called Frank Miller Lumber, it's about 2.5 hours away so when I go I usually stock up like crazy. They have exotics, plywood etc, in all sorts of species. Really decently priced too. Hope you're having a great week. @@FlynndoggWoodwork Glad you're back. I thought you might get your wood out of a mill. We have very few nearby; but, there is a place that gets their lumber out of Canada near here, it is wildly over priced. I may have to take a trip to Western NY to try a place we found on line.

@@FlynndoggWoodwork Online lumber scares us because we're not sure what the quality of the wood would be. Normally, in the olden days, if one did not duke the yard help they'd give you whatever was on the top of the pile. Good, bad or indifferent. Once they got to know that you where going to grease their palms, they were more likely to cull out the crap. Also, we're leery of the shipping costs for bulk lumber. If only the meat was younger, or some of the meatballs had more gumption, we'd think about milling it ourselves from logs.

@@themeat5053 Totally agree with you. The price of board feet goes up substantially I would guess after you add shipping cost. Before I ever turn on a machine for the first time I always double check that the blades are tight to the knot the screws whatever’s holding it down.
