---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The DEWALT Atomic 20V Brushless 4-1/2″ Circular Saw is a lightweight and compact saw designed for pro use all the way down to DIY. The size of the saw and blade makes it comfortable and easy to use, even for people who are new to wood saws.
The DEWALT Atomic 20V Circular Saw will be a popular saw due to its easy one-hand cutting on thinner materials. For small jobs or quick work, this saw is easy to get out, travel with and put away. It will not take the place of a traditional 7-1/4″ circular saw, but more as a supplement for smaller jobs and in tight spots where a standard circular saw won’t fit.
4-1/2" Circular Saw Design
When looking at the DEWALT Atomic 20V Brushless 4-1/2″ Circular Saw from the side, you will note a few places the saw was designed to hold with a single hand. The trigger has a multi-level sort of “S” shape that allows for a forward or rearward grip, each having access to the trigger. This is ideal for tight places in a more professional application.
There is a secondary or auxiliary handle above the motor and just slightly to the rear of the blade. This is a great place to hold the saw with a second hand for precise cuts. We found the auxiliary handle comfortable for cutting sheet goods. The auxiliary handle is also removable if you need the saw for tight areas.
Height and bevel adjustments have a familiar feeling to a traditional circular saw. The Atomic Saw will bevel to 45º with a depth of cut of 1". You can adjust the stop at 90º with a Philips head screw for improved accuracy. At 90º you have a 1-1/2″ cutting capacity that will just cut 2x dimensional lumber. This saw will struggle to fully cut 2x lumber that is warped as we show in the video.
Finding 4-1/2″ Blades
The DEWALT Atomic 20V Brushless 4-1/2″ Circular Saw comes with a Carbide tipped 24-Tooth 4-1/2″ blade. This blade works well for rough cuts but leaves a lot to be desired when used for trim or siding. We have listed multiple blades above that will fit this saw and increase the cut quality. Unfortunately, if you purchase this in a big box store, you will most likely not find any blades to fit this saw in the store. we feel this will quickly change once more of these 4-1/2" saws become more popular with pro-grade brand names.
For now, we can look and find decent blades on Amazon.

Hey Brian. Thanks for the review. I've been using this saw on a near daily basis as a professional remodeler / contractor and although it does have a few minor quirks on occasion such as the vac adapter & allen key for blade changes needing to be better secured or stored separately to avoid losing. I've found it to be an incredibly versatile tool to have on the job site. I refer to it as my trim saw & it is perfect for flooring rips & fitment cuts. It's quick, lightweight & easy to use for accurate cuts in a multitude of materials. It's pretty much, my go to circ. saw on most of our remodeling projects. it takes care of about 80-90% of the tasks we use a circular saw for every week. It performs well and is a quicker & easier to alternative to my DCS577 Flexvolt for most applications, especially for the less experienced guys. Plus, you just can't beat the accuracy & great line of sight you get from using a blade-left saw. Couple of tips- for best performance when cutting any kind of wood, I use the DIablo 4 3/8" 36T Carbide finish blade. Super fast & pristine cuts, with Zero Tearout (night & day difference to stock blade). #2. You can actually get Turbo Diamond blades with 3/8" arbor or use an adapter from amazon etc. (3/8-5/8"). WIth the right diamond blade, it is actually capable of performing clean (dry) cuts in tile, Quartz or even 2cm stone on occasion. #3. The factory blade or 60T HSS blades will also work well for cutting the newer types of shower waterproofing panels, kerdi, schluter, Wedi Etc. Even Cement backer board on occasion with the 60T. Thanks for all your hard work, honest reviews & fantastic content!! Especially your dedication to producing high quality, entertaining & informative content right now, with such limited resources. It's most appreciated!!👍👍👍 Keep up the great work, you just earned another subscriber!

I purchased this saw on June 27th 2024, as a kit. I read the manual and came across the the dust collection section, turns out that the manual reads that the kit comes with a dust collector bag. I called Dewalt and, sure enough, they mailed me out a bag to use with this particular saw. If you purchase the kit version be sure to read your manual to see if it says that a dust bag should be supplied....🤗🤗🤗

I am a contractor and I use this on a daily basis for framing, sheet8ng and even finish carpentry. I just did some cuts on stained oak 3/4" trim, taped it with masking tape and had a perfectly smooth finish cut. I used the blade it came with, no issues. 🙏🏻😁

I always wanted one of these and recently a guy on a remodeling job I was doing had one and I finally got a chance to use one , I really liked it , its great for doing some quick cuts especially were space is limited and it's so lightweight I can take it with me everywhere I think I might need a saw , I immediately when out and bought myself one , right now H.D. has them on sale for $99 and that's a great price for this tool , they don't go on sale too often , so I'd suggest getting down there and buying yourself one ....11/12/21

I found this video extremely helpful and purchased this item due to your video review. The reason I bought this for my husband was to help him with a picked fence. I just got my DeWalt DCS571B. I bought a Power Stack battery to go with it. It assembled together very easily. It runs fine on my standard 1.5 ah batteries, some I have had for ten years it has cut everything that I have asked it to cut with ease. I don’t think it needs anything but the entry level batteries for most jobs. I am not a journeyman carpenter but I occasionally demand a lot from my tools, often outside their normal abilities- just ask my 20 odd Stihl chainsaws.😊

I didnt need it, but I bought this saw to have a new gadget. I love it! It is always in my truck right next to my Dewalt 60 volt 7 1/4". The only downsides are yes, loosing the allen tool, wish it would cut just 1/8" deeper, the screws leaves gowges in the rip guide, and its left handed. Not a fan of left handed, but on occasion that characteristic comes in handy. Besides for that, I love it. Its rips fantastically, lets me get into tighter spaces, and actually has a bit of power for its size.

Been a plumbing apprentice for a year now and bought one of these because we cut lumber for backing all the time. A sawzall was too much work and inaccurate. A normal circle saw seemed overkill. This was the perfect middle. Perfect for pocket cuts and patching holes in floors. Tool is awesome.

Nice review, Brian. I've had that saw for about a month now and it's become my go to saw. I use a ryobi dust collection bag and the dust gets stuck at the 90 degree bend. So, I'm going to 3D print an adapter that comes straight out and I think that will solve the problem. Be well.

I just picked this thing up because I need a saw in my reciprocating wasn't doing the job for the 2x4 again plywood.. this thing saved the Day! I picked it up for $100 at Home Depot because for some reason they had a $99 sticker on it on the floor but the system was ringing up at 1:50... I snatched it up and wanted to get two. As good as this thing worked I wish I would have. Clean cuts through the 2x4s and plywood. I could use it one handed and did not have one issue. The 5 amp hour battery already had lasted the entire job today

I own the 7 1/4 flexvolt version but I find that I mostly use it for breaking down sheet goods and the occasional cutting of 2-by lumber. I mainly got this because I can never get used to the blade being on the right side. No one can explain to me why it's beneficial to have the blade on the right yet all "worm-drive" version are on the left.

Actually, I wasn't surprised that the dust collection port operated well. With the vacuum on, the port is held in place by suction. If there was a manual lock on it, and someone tripped over the vacuum hose, it could pull the saw from the operator's hand and cut them. That's the reason Apple created MAGLOCK for their laptops.

These little circular saws are actually very handy. Making a quick cut or two is easy. I find it to be less intimating than a 7 1/4" saw so it would be good for those people that are timid with larger tools.

I love how this saw dumps sawdust away from me. Very important since I use this usually in awkward positions or tighter quarters, so dust kicking up in my face would suck. Love this thing. Done so much more than I thought it would. If I did have one wish with this, the shoe could be a be improved on . The rolled steel sometimes would ride up on guides or rulers I use as a guide, where as your typical saws will butt up on it nicely.

Hi Brian, This is a cool cordless trim saw. It would have worked great on a exterior window project i was working on. I had to cut the bevel siding that butt up to the window frame. Then i added 1 x 4 casing around the windows. Also some of the windows were in the second story. At the time i purchased a Dremel corded trim saw with a 3 1/2 inch blade. The problem with the dremel was i had to have a extension cord and stretch to second story. This DeWalt cordless would work great for those types of projects. Now i would put a solid cap around the dust extractor so it can come out from the bottom of the blade guard. Don't really need a vacuum working outside or working two story high, LOL... I might look into this tool. Also at home depot they do carry the diablo blades for this saw. For some reason they place them on the corner of the tool rack. I quess it's small enough to stack and people to see them. Thanks for the video

You shouldn't need a special adapter or DeWalt vacuum/extractor for dust collection with tools that use the Quick Connector so long as your shop vac hose is 1-1/4". Remove the nub from the end of the hose, pick up the DeWalt DWV9000 and thread it on to the bare end of that hose. I've done that with the old hose from a scrapped shop vac and now have two hoses for my working shop vac - one for regular use and one for DeWalt dust collection.

Do you think that the compact saw would be able to cut through a bamboo countertop? Or a regular particle-board style countertop? I want to try to cut down a bigger piece of counter for my very small laundry room myself. I currently only have a mitre/chop saw, and a jigsaw, neither of which would be useful to cut wood counter with. But I was thinking of buying this tool if I can use it to cut the counters. And for future projects of course! Let me know what you think?

Circular Saw (Tool Only) but had to return it immediately since the trigger switch does not keep the blade running, it shuts off automatically when pressing the fully pressing the trigger even when not cutting anything. Even the second saw I got when returning the first one that did not work, even the second one did not work. Had to return it also.

WorkshopAddict yeah I saw the little belt clip and I like how thin the head is from blade to back. I like using a circular saw for my post notches to keep them straighter then clean it up with jigsaw so I think this would be awesome. Using the 391 and I like it but it’s still too big to lug around without a hand on it. How did you find the belt clip to be?

I have 1/2" to 1" cement plaster walls (with the backer board) in my 1949 house and was thinking it would be good for cutting into that during the next series of remodeling projects. Do you think with the cement board blade and dust collection hooked up it would be able to handle the job? I previously used a reciprocating saw and it cut through it really well but the dust was way out of control! I have also considered a grinder but I think the dust would still be the problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks much! Gus

Wish you used the 8ah for the long cut on the sheet of plywood. I find it interesting that the 5ah and the 8ah have a difference in power even though they are both 20v batts.

You can watch our drill battery test video and it will show the voltage levels that each battery could hold, from 2ah and up. IMHO, this is a great saw with a 5Ah battery and might be with an 8. But if I need an 8Ah battery for this saw for power, I would pull out my 6-1/2".

Hey Jimmy, just thought I'd say that the reason higher capacity batteries deliver more power (when fully charged) is because when you drive current out of a battery, there is an associated voltage drop that occurs (Ohms law). The bigger the battery, the less significant that voltage drop is, assuming the current delivered is the same. So you maintain a higher voltage, and thus a higher power. Theoretically, with enough amp hours in your battery, that voltage drop becomes negligible. If you're lightly using the tool, it could pull more current from the battery to make up for the voltage drop, thus keeping your power constant. However, if you're maxing out the tool performance, and it has hit the max current it is designed to pull, any voltage drop that occurs will lower your power. That's where the big batteries help: on high demand activities. On light use, you may not notice a difference. Hope that helps!

I need some help on the blades here as now i'm totally confused. I bought this one linked above ►Rockwell 4-1/2-Inch 60T Circular Saw Blade: as it has 60 teeth and 40-80 teeth is what everyone says your supposed to use on finish wood...I put this thing on and it cuts significantly worse than the 24 tooth that came with it on finish grade pine. What am i missing here? are all 60 tooth blades different? Am i not supposed to be using that specific rockwell blade on wood?
