One other thing I'll add for people who complain about these saws leaking. There is an authorized DeWalt and Milwaukee repair center in my town, the technician said the saws are designed to leak oil on the chain to lubricate it, they really don't have a pump like a big two-cycle chainsaw does. Best practice is to drain the oil tank when you're done sawing. I use 30 wt air compressor oil for bar oil it leaks but lubricates the chain and bar well.

Your video really helped me, I busted off my chain break handle I needed to replace it. 1 trick I learned after redoing my repair cuz I forgot to put the rubber boot on the chain brake handle. Do Not mess with that Big spring you don't need to take it out. First remove that little arc shaded spring that raps 180° around the chain brake handle, then engage chain break by pushing handle forward, then pull the pin and remove chain brake handle. Reverse the steps to reassemble. Your video was really good very detailed thank you.

In case anybody does not have long TORX wrenchs, the screws on this saw have a combo head ( TORX ... and straight blade slot ) I took one of the short accessible screws out and found a STRAIGHT blade screwdriver that fit the combo slot heads, need to grind the blade narrow enough to fit in some long holes. It worked as long as the driver shaft is long enough to fit the opening.

Everything you're saying is almost my exact experience with this particular tool. I have many other Dewalt tools, but this is the only one that has given my any issues. No way did I use this 10 times. Somewhere close to 5-8 days. Came back to use it after months, and nothing. After using switches over and over looking for a loose connection and shaking and moving it to different angles, it finally started. It just started for a while and stopped over and over again. Watching you take this apart let's me know one thing for sure. I'm not doing this. 🤣This video is excellent and will watch it to the end. Maybe I'll see another way in or give me an idea if I want to fix it, or chuck it! Great video!

Yeah it’s disappointing. But I also have a Dewalt Leaf blower. Which works great, but if a battery is left in it for some time it will ruin the battery. So I have to ensure when I’m done using it I remove the battery right away. Went through 3 batteries before I figured out the common thread. Thankfully dewalt warranteed the batteries. They definitely have some duds in their lineup. Thanks for your comment.

Great video, thanks! I'm nonplussed by the amount of work to take this apart and see if I have the same $3 switch failure. Maybe I'm just lazy. I'm watching over and over around 11 minutes imagining: a drilling with a hole saw without a center pilot just under the left single bolt under the hand guard safety, and intercepting the wires to the switch. If I [short or open?] those wires permanently, the mechanical hand guard chain brake would still work, but without that switch you could power up the motor with the brake engaged?

Hey! I just tore down my own. The switch is considered a Double Pole Single Throw, but it has one side tied together with positive. The red wire and the white wire are on the common side, the black and yellow are on the switched side. When you squeeze the trigger all four are connected pretty much simultaneously. Sadly, this is all I've gained by this teardown, as my board has failed. The chainsaw was a freebie out of the garbage so probably going to pull the good brushless DC motor and solid metal gear box to toss the rest.

Mine also stopped turning on after several years of use. However the chain brake safety switch tests out fine. As well as the top trigger. Everything else seems OK as well. Not sure what else it could be other than the controller. One interesting difference is that my saw is about 3 years old and the entire gear case and motor housing are cast aluminum instead of plastic. It is a Type 1. Based on the photos I see the Type 2 is plastic. However in both of our cases that isn't what failed... A new Type 1 controller/switch/motor assy is $125 and a Type 2 is $85. I bought a new Type 2 motor/controller assy PN784302 for $85 from Dewalt Servicenet. It works again.

Great video on how to dismantle this sucker. For me, the brake micro switch was OK and the problem is probably the $$ brushless controller. As for comments on the micro switch replacement with 3 lugs or leads, these switches usually have a supply lug and one lug to connect for Normally Open, the other for Normally Closed. For this saw, use the NO lug.

Wife had the same - instantly dead - happen to her saw. She had the brake on. After pulling the hand guard fully rearward (it will pop), then releasing it to spring forward a little, the saw started working again. Push the hand guard fully forward, and the brake is set. I suspect mine is the control board though because it crept slowly and then stopped and pulling the trigger multiple times, it even slowly crept backwards before it totally died. @@ApacheRanch Update - I took it apart - thanks to your video, also, I left the locking mechanism in the housing, just pulled the pin and handle and it stayed in there fine. Anyway, the little switch was fine, and the main switch was fine (which it's a double switch - small wires (probably control wires to the board logic) and large wires - providing current to the ESC to pulse to the motor. I had 20V going to the board in both the heavy gauge and small gauge wires. I was too impatient to break out the o'scope and look for pulses to the motor. The failure symptoms (ran slowly backwards before it totally croaked) indicated bad control circuit in the first place. I found where you can purchase the the control board, but it comes with the motor and switches and battery connection, and it was like $130 plus shipping, and a new saw now goes for $158 on Az. Also, found the source of my oil leak - the o-ring where the tube fitting goes into the oil tank was wadded up the shaft where it was assembled in the factory, so it wasn't seated properly allowing it to leak the oil out all over my floor every time. I sent Dewalt an email on their customer service intake about my dissatisfaction of a like new tool failing like that. I'll let you know if they do anything. PS. I clipped out the control board and saved the switches and motor and bar & chain. The rest went into the dumpster.

That lifetime warranty is BS. I had a shop vac that they took months and months and made excuses saying it was on back order it's been 4months now still nothing. Dewalt has been around alot longer than ridgid and they stand behind their products for 3 years and within them 3 years any problems you have they will replace it and you'll have a new tool within 1 week or so.

Mine just stopped when pruning some small branches. I checked the brake switch but it tested fine. But, I had a spare switch so put it in anyway and it made no difference. The motor windings check out fine when following instructions from my electrician friend. The main switch is working properly, so it seems mine has a fault on the main circuit board that's encased in resin. The PCB is not available from suppliers I've found so far, so it looks like it's all over for my saw. Sad face!

@@ApacheRanch thanks, those should work, though they differ slightly from stock. Got those and my torx in the mail. I’m guessing something in the electronics board inside has a crack. When it warms up and expands some electrical connection is then broken and it stops running. When it cools down the connection is made again, and it then works again for you. That’s all I can think of. I wish you the best.
