Dest Droid Agreed. If DeWalt was paying him, they probably would have gave him the 18V if there is one. Milwaukee has one and it would tear that little DeWalt apart.

If he was paid for that review he would of fixed the review to make sure it looked like a real winner by breaking the lugs a little first or Somthing.

found it for $99 at lowes just today. this video saved me $99... i use the 20v version at work and that thing is pretty nice. from what i've seen, i'd be better off buying an off brand on amazon or ebay.

Nice to see another DeWalt product putting out a third of the stated ability. I got rid of my DeWalt junk and moved over to Ridgid on Black Friday 2012, haven't looked back since.

rigid is fucking junk compared to dewalt. These 12v tools are made to compete with prices of other brands such as rigid and ryobi which are much cheaper quality. The 18v and higher stuff is where the quality dewalt tools are.

prooutdoorsman I used an 18v impact for 5 inch lags working with DirecTV. I even returned and replaced it... Twice. Neither of the 3 DeWalts lasted me more than 2 weeks. The Ridgid has been going strong 6 days a week. Not to mention it's lighter, cheaper, and has a battery meter on it.

I recently got fed up with my mismash of cordless tools (Ryobi, B&D and even some HF) and saved my money and bought all new DeWalt 20V Max tools. I've been HIGHLY impressed with the quality and performance. I have both the 3/8 and 1/2 inch impact and I can tell you the 3/8 20V is much stronger than the 12V, I know because I started by getting the 12V 3/8 impact and the drill, within a week I took them back and got 20V versions. So I've used both. I think the rating is like 35 ft/lbs more than the 12V, but I swear it is more. Also, the 20V batteries have gauges on them. As for Air tools, since getting my 20V set, I've only used my air compressor for painting, sand blaster and blowing air. I love being able to take my impact, drill, angle grinder and sawsall to the U-Pull it.

Just wanted to make a quick note, when Eric said he knows when to recharge when it looses it's "umpf" You can see on the battery that it is a lithium ion battery. Lithium ion batteries do not behave in the same way NiCd batteries do. By that I mean NiCd batteries used in tools will start to go slower and slower until fully drained. lithium-ion batteries on the other hand will keep going at full until they just stop. Just a note to some people out there that may not know this. NiCd batteries due to the memory effect issues it is generally best/advised to run the battery all the way down then recharge the battery. With a lithium Ion battery you do not do that. Even if you only use it for a few minutes and it still has like 80% or higher charge, recharge it. This will give you the best life out of the battery.

I just got the best 3/8 cordless impact. Milwaukee M18 Fuel. They have a brushless DC motor and produce 200 ft/lbs of torque on the highest setting. After sitting for a month or so I was able to rotate my tires (removing and installing 20 lug nuts) and afterward I discovered that only 25% of the battery charge had been consumed. That is using the smaller 2.0 battery. You can get them with a 4.0 battery that is obviously twice as large with twice the charge. They ain't cheap (~$300) but they're worth it.

Thank you for this review. I have a 1/2" and 1/4" dewalt impact. I take apart trucks and sell parts on Ebay for a living just using my Dewalt 18 volt impacts. I have yet had to break out my air impact. I was actually going to buy this tool. After this review I will spend my money on something else. Thank you Eric.

In all honesty If you are at all able to exchange it Take it back and exchange it for a dewalt 20v max 1/4" impact driver that way you can use it for all your screws and fastners around the shop and when you want to do 3/8" sockets you pop in a 3/8" adapter you will be much more satisfied with that tool

Good review as always Eric. Just a note on batteries and power output: The lithium-ion batteries that this tool has and more and more new tools have these days shouldn't decrease in power as the battery is used. These batteries should have a 'fade-free' characteristic which allows the power output to remain constant until the battery runs out which it will then cut out power instantly. The older types of batteries (Ni-cad) will have this power fade problem along with other problems therefore should be avoided. For this type of work a tool with a minimum 18V and a 3.0 - 4.0Ah battery would be more useful :) Keep up the brilliant work

You probably know this by now, but if you're going to get cordless anything, get Milwaukee. Especially their impacts. They have cordless impact wrenches that have equal torque to the best air impacts.

I have the DeWalt 36V 1/2" impact (rated to 320 ft/lbs) and havent found anything it couldnt take off yet. Although i'm not a professional mechanic, the largest fasteners i've taken off were rusted bolts/nuts connecting a strut to a steering knuckle which were supposed to be torqued to 155 ft/lbs, and it didnt struggle at all. I got it because I have to work on my cars in a parking lot and lugging a air compressor and tank around would be impractical. The only downside is that the impact is rather large, uses a detent pin to retain the socket requiring a tool to remove the socket, and cost $450.

Eric, I have the 1/2 Dewalt Impact Wrench- DCF880HM2 20-volt with the lithium ion batteries and it removed my lug nuts (torqued at 100 ft lbs) with no problem. The lithium ion batteries also have a power gauge to let you know the the batteries energy level. I also used this wrench to change out a ball joint and control arm on a 2005 Pontiac Vibe-the tool worked like a charm. Thanks again for your review.

When looking at cost, one has to remember the cost of replacing batteries. Total cost for my air tools and compressor over 25 years is just the equipment, zero ongoing cost. Over the same time interval, the biggest cost of battery powered tools is in the batteries. Just like inkjet computer printers, the outlay cost is just the beginning.

Eric, i too was looking for a good 3/8 cordless impact tool and i took all those brands into consideration but i ended up buying a snap on CT4410a, i spent about $500 right from the truck, its light weight and wayyy more powerful than any other cordless 3/8 out there, similar to your 3/8 air gun.

DeWalt also sells a 1/4 impact that is a 20v. That way you're able to quick change bits that are 1/4 drive, 3/8, and 1/2. And yes it is capable of breaking most lug nuts loose.

DeWalt almost always makes pretty good tools. I bought a regular 12v drill years ago just for removing window hardware as a painter, as it was smaller and lighter than the 18v, and it has lots of torque, 350 ft-lbs. on a fresh charge. I've even used it for crazy stuff like drilling 3/8 holes in 1/2 inch plate steel. Only real issue is battery time and overall battery lifetime, though it's a NiMH type. Ace Hardware currently wants $70 for a new battery, which is half what I paid for the drill and two batteries at the same damn store. lol I think you're best off going 18v+ for mechanics tasks.

I don't know if anyone has said anything about it yet, but Matco makes a Infinium 1/4" cordless impact and it is amazing. I have one at the shop I work at and it will outwork most 3/8 cordless impacts. They claim to break away 70 lb/ft and that's probably a low estimate. I've taken apart engines and transmissions with mine and it just hammers the bolts off. The down side is its pricey. Also you need to use a quality socket with them or you'll be breaking sockets often.

I have a Ryobi 1/4" impact I got it with a drill and 2 batteries for about the same price that DeWalt is. The Ryobi is supposed to be 1500 in lbs, and I haven't had any problems with it. There have been a few bolts that I couldn't undo with it, but to be fair I had to put a shit load of force to finally break them loose. At the time I lost my 1/2 to 3/8 adapter so I couldn't try my 250 ft lb air impact on it, I doubt that would have worked, that bolt was on there... I am not sure how much yours costs, just saying that if someone wants a lower priced alternative that works, it's worth checking out. If yours claims to be 70 ft lb. 1500 in lb equates to around 124 ft lb.

Dewalt's 12v lineup of drills and impacts are solely meant to be used for very light jobs, such as driving screws into wood and drilling very thin steel (HVAC/ELECTRICIAN WORK), Compared to its competitors the Dewalt 12v lineup is a heck of a lot lighter to reduce fatigue on the operator. They were never meant for power/torque. I believe that they even have polymer gears to reduce as much weight as possible. If Power/torque is needed for a job then look elsewhere, something like Milwaukee or Bosch Should do the job, but do not expect it to be as light as the Dewalt ones.

The DCF902S2 3/8 12v xtreme compact series is $99. With 2 batteries and charger. Looks just like that one. And it’s brushless. It has a neat feature. In mode1 while removing a nut or bolt it goes to mode3 till it detects free spin then slows down, While tightening detecting free spin it goes slow once it feels resistance it pauses a second then goes to mode3. This one has 150bls ft of tightening torque and 200bls ft of loosing torque. This one removes lugs no problems. But that’s not what I bought it for.

I have that same 3/8 DeWalt cordless. I use it every day, have had it for about 8 months. I warrantied both batteries about a month ago. the more often you use them and recharge them the shorter the life gets. the first new battery lasted a week on its initial charge and that was using it every day. the old ones I was charging them at least once a day. MAC now sells one that is identical, well they are partnered with DeWalt. it is black and red and it still takes the same dewalt batteries.

I purchased a Makita BTW450 in June of 2013, it was 290 dollars open box from Amazon, but amazingly the person hadn't even used it. Looks like it was a gift, they looked at it, then sent it back. Anyways that thing has a breaking force of (supposedly) 325 lb-ft, but is simply on or off. For breaking bolts loose like lugs or pulley bolts it's great. Retail this goes for about 380 to 400 right now, and it weighs almost 8 pounds. I think when you buy something that's low voltage/low amp, light weight, and inexpensive, it's going to shine through. I guess I couldn't really see the value in having something that could BARELY break loose 30 lb-ft, I can do that with a 3/8 ratchet. The only nice thing would be to break it loose and then use it to spin the nut off, but usually I find that even a tool that size isn't going to fit where I'm working in.

I had a similar problem with a Craftsmen 1/2" pneumatic impact. I had two exchanges (3 tools) that would only run a lug nut down to about 30-35 ft-lbs. I gave up and took in-store credit to buy an Ingersoll Rand. If you feel like giving it another test, run down a lug nut with this impact then measure it with a beam-type torque wrench. The point where the bolt starts to turn is a reasonable guess at the torque.

first off with the lithium ion batteries, they always have a full charge, so you tool is always working at full power, you will see this when the battery runs out the tool will just stop working and not slowly die. Secondly i have the 3/8 drive dewalt 20v impact, it will take off lug nuts, trans bolts, engine mount bolts, ect. The difference between the 12v and 20v is night and day and for the price it is way more sensible to get the 20v over the 12v

the 12v max is designed for smaller jobs where you dont need a bigger impact. I have a 20v max which has alot more power than the 12v max tools. but electric impacts are way less poweful than pneumatic tools. Dewalt makes a corded 1/2impact that makes somewhere around 400 ft pounds of torque. they do have a nice cordless 1/2in impact wrench. I love my 20v max 1/4" impact driver I have a 3/8" adaptor and a 1/2" adaptor for sockets and I use it all the time for taking things apart and very happy with it

Not to mention that DeWalt seem to be favoring these canvas bags instead of their rugged hard plastic case that went with their old quality. I had 14.4v dewalt drill that lasted 10 years with batteries and finally retired it. It was replaced with a 18v dewalt and the thing pales in comparison to my old drill. Thanks to China quality.

I think you may have a defective tool. I have the 18V version of this tool, which was about $50 more and it is excellent for the most part. Breaks lug nuts loose no problem (unless they were ridiculously overtorqued with an air impact). Meanwhile, my friend bought a 20V 1/2" Craftsman that he ended up sending back because it couldn't break a lug nut loose (but it was rated at a fair bit more torque than mine), so defects do happen. Also, never ever never ever never EVER start trying to use a battery-powered tool (or most things that run on batteries for that matter) without fully charging the batteries first. I'm sure it says to do that in your manual.
@ericthecarguy
@ericthecarguy 10 жыл бұрын
I don't think it was defective. In fact, you pointed out the difference already. 18v would have a lot more torque than the 10.6v that this tool is rated at. Thanks for your input.

Danger Dane I couldn't find a spec for the batteries, but I did take a voltage reading on a less-than-full pack, and it was at 19.31V, so perhaps the 18V rating is voltage under load? So mine does pack a bit more voltage, but I still can't believe Eric's 12V could only barely crack a measly 30ft-lbs. I still say there's something wrong with it. That thing should be able to crack a (properly torqued) lug nut, at least on a full charge.

A 3/8 air impact should be around 200-ft lb, my porter cable 18v 1/4 hex impact is rated 1600 in lb/133 ft lb and it would leave this dewalt behind. I work at Lowe's and after stocking the tool section for two years I'd say the kobalt 20v 1/2 impact is a good choice which does 350 ft lbs same as my 1/2 air impact which has worked great. The Kobalt also costs about as much as that 12v dewalt stocking stuffer. From what I saw I'd take that thing back and get my $200+ back.

This is the difference between a shill review and a genuinely helpful review. If there had been a little fuckery, thousands of trusting viewers could have been tricked into buying this thing. Thanks for being honest, Eric.

Hey Eric, Have you tried the electric impact with a cable? I have a clarke one and it is rated at 450 nm or 339 ft ibs. I haven't done any science tests on it like you, but I'll say it's pretty strong and cheaper than battery ones. I've used it to remove bearing from front hubs. Nice vid!

Wow, disappointing is an understatement. I hope you didn't pay for that thing or at least can return it for a refund. As others have said an 18v or 20v model might do better but will be (considerably?) bigger. Your 1/2" electric impact looks huge. A good test for an electric impact in my opinion would be a junk yard run. The more rust the better. See if you can take down the top end of a junk yard motor or see how far you can dismantle the car. Now that would be a video I'd love to see.

Eric have you ever though about using hobby batteries? most LiPo batteries that are 12.75(3S) and 5Ah cost about 50. you can modify any dead battery from your current tools. also you can strap the battery to your wrist or the top of the tool. But offcourse you would need a charger. which would cost $50 as well. but those batteries can be charged with in an hour give or take.

Great review Eric, very honest. I honestly think that you may have been expecting a little too much from a cheap low end tool. I have the 18V XRP 1/2 inch drive impact, and I promise it will loosen any lugnut you put in front of it. I love your videos, keep em coming!

Impacts are affected by stretch bolts and aluminum parts. You won't be able to use full power on either one. Aluminum wheels are harder to remove than steel...

Ok you need an 18v min. Try a Milwaukee m18 3/8 impact, if you can get the fuel as it's brushless. Also the xc 4.0 battery would probably be best for your usage scenario. Seriously it will be your new favorite tool.

Eric, your review is spot on for this tool. It is lovely and does a good job but, as you've found out, it is just not the tool you need. I see you've got the 18V version now so I'm going to watch that, that;s the minium you'd need. There are better than DeWalt for the auto worker these are relatively new tools for DeWalt and both versions are underpowered IMO, either would do me fine, you'll need more power.

unfortunately i bought a Dewalt 18 Volt 1/2 impact for my lug nuts. the sales person guaranteed me it would do the job.. well i went back with the tool and an breaker bar to test it in front of him, the tool kept hammering with no effect. 1 finger on the breaker bar (10 inches long), took it back no sweat..

I bit of advice. Before using any cordless tool ALWAYS charge the battery fully first.I have ruined mny batteries by using them straight out of the box.I don't know why but if you charge them first, they will loose the ability to hold a charge with in a couple days.i don't know why that is but its true.I believe it even tells you to do so in the instruction manuel.

Not knocking your review. But their 12V is the lower end of their product scale. They have an 18V and a 20V which offer a wide variety of other tools that you can swap batteries between saws, drivers, etc... I have the 20V 1/2" impact, and the 20V Hammer Drill / 1/4" Impact (drill set combo). And the 1/4" Imapct can break lugs free.. They recently released a newer "brushless motor" design. I also have the 20V jigsaw and Circular saw (got bare tool since i had 20V batteries).. I think the 12V impact driver would be useful for light duty stuff like maybe furniture assembly, or other home stuff. A friend uses a similar combo set to mine as his primary impact now and doesnt bother with air tool unless it is in use by someone helping him.

I have a snap on 14.4v electric 3/8 impact gun and it's so much better then the cheap Dewalt impact, it's good for 120-130nm even takes off some wheels. Use it on subframe bolts, engine mounts everything only use my snap on electric impact for stubborn wheels and hub bolts. Trade the dewalt for a snap on 14.4v you will be blown away

I work at a Toyota garage in the uk and most of the guys here have one of these impacts including me they are great for small bolts and interior bolts and Toyota use a lot of 10 and 12 mm witch the gun can get off no problem. it is really easy to just pick it up and use quickly instead of a ratchet or air impact. I will say it is useless on engines nuts and bolts they are generally to far to tight for it but most bolts out side of the engine over 14mm are to tight for the gun but lower it should be able to tackle fine. But I use mine nearly everyday on undoing small nuts and bolts in a flash. Also the one sold in the uk is labeled as a 10.8v. But buying this really depends on what you want to use it for. For what I use it's great and so is the battery life.

I know this video is old. Tools today are a lot better. I have a cheap xfinity brand Brushless impact wrench, and driver. The wrench is a beast, takes lugs off very easy. These tools were $79 a piece. Just goes to show tech does get better. To be fair, mine are 20v, not 12.

That's internal resistance from the battery which causes the voltage to drop when taking current out of it. But this applies to all batteries. I guess some dude felt SCAMMED and OUTRAGED by the decreased voltage.

Problem. Tool is 12v. You can't do anything with 12v. Realistically you can't even drive too many screws with a 12v drill. The old 18v Ni-Cad Drills and Impacts worked fine. You would have no problem taking off lug nuts with it. Eric, If you get the chance, try out the older 18V Hammer drill or Impact. Or if you are looking to lighten things up, try out the new 20v Hammer drill or Impacts.

I've never been too impressed with battery powered tools. There are some good ones out there, you need to weigh them based on convenience vs performance. I tend to lean towards performance. This one falls short in my opinion.

Dewalts 509 impact is the one to get. I really don't get why they put this particular impact out. In my opinion it seems kind of useless if you can't disassemble cylinder head parts with it. Not sayings it's junk but the low torque numbers of a valve train should be gravy for any impact if you ask me. If it can't do things as simple as that you'd be better off spending the 200 bucks on a ratchet and wrench set.

It’s amazing how far cordless technology has come in 5 years. Try the new 12v xtreme. dcf902 Compare to the dcf813 It’s cheaper (99.00) , smaller, much, much stronger, and brushless so should last longer. And yes it can break the lug nuts of the wheels. (As long breakaway torque is less than 200 lb/ft, you’d be surprised how many tire shops exceed this.) It also has two speeds, as well as a variable loosening and tightening mode.
