This is some great engineering - thanks for sharing. Sadly, my printer isn't big enough for the design. But you gave me some inspiration. I was trying to work out how to avoid reducing the bore of the ductwork from my extractor (100mm) using your design, and realised the duct will fit behind the blade if cut. I laid a 100mm flexible duct across the back of the saw with one end blocked. I then cut a section out of the pipe which was in line with the dust exhaust, and big enough to take the saw body when cutting at full depth. It captures nearly everything and you can slide it back and forth to accommodate mitres. Cheap and easy, but I couldn't see the wood for the dust until you shared your design! Thanks

Well conceived hood for most shop work. I'm a finish carpenter and need to regularly make use of the saw's entire range of both miter and bevel cuts to deal with jobsite conditions. Am I correct to conclude that this dust hood would fairly quickly be destroyed by miter cuts other than at 90 and 45, as well as by bevel and/or compound angle cuts?
@superphilschneider4 жыл бұрын
Hey James, nice job. I wonder if you could have used a sacrificial top plate that could be replaced, once you've done a number of angled cuts. Did you use a dust collector or a shop vac for the air movement? Dust collector needs to minimise any "minor losses" due to fittings, etc, so might be an even better idea to not reduce down to the 2 1/2 " port sizes. Overall, though, I like your process and feel like you've created a nice, minimalist solution.
@deemsdavis78114 жыл бұрын
James, Thanks for your work on this, it was timely for me as I was in the midst of setting up a new shop in new home. After getting quotes to have a 3D service print it for me, I bought my own printer and printed your part as well as a 3 way manifold to tie into 6" duct. ( saved $ vs the costs of the services) I've been noodling about some improvements ( a replaceable sacrificial top, some way to allow for the saw base to rotate without creating a new saw kerf in the top, and how to incorporate a collection point that replaces the old "following" tube and "connects with the bottom back of the saw guard." I enjoy tinkering with CAD when I have the time.

Have you taken on the challenge of CSMS dust collection that allows for the saw's full range of compound miter cuts, including all bevel angles. I admire the elegance of the work here, but as a professional finish carpenter, abridging the saw's full functionality make this solution, with all its merit, inadequate. I am working to solve the problem I pose and have tentatively concluded that the solution cannot rely solely on hard components, but rather must incorporate flexible ones of rubber, and/or a much bulkier shroud not intended to capture dust straight from the blade. Yet I hope to avoid the big tents used in the Rousseau and Fastcap commercial designs. Any thoughts?

Hi James, when you are cutting width or thick pieces, I think you will find dust isn't being captured. If you come up with a way to keep port close to blade when it is slid out then you will have solved this riddle. I have a compound sliding miter and built a hood . I have sliding doors (curtains) on each side of blade as well as a plenum beneath the saw to allow dust pickup in three locations. In rear on each side of overarm post and beneath blade. Getting about 95 percent.

@Blueridgedog3 жыл бұрын
It works great for angled cuts, it just puts another cut in the dust shroud. Eventually a pie shaped area will be removed. Beveled cuts have a similar impact in that the area from 90 degrees to 45 degrees gets chewed up. I have printed a second after using the first for some time. I do furniture exclusively, so I don't make may beveled or angled cuts.

@jeffw86113 жыл бұрын
To some degree, it may. A shop vac moves a small amount of air at high pressure while a dust collection unit moves large amounts at low pressure. You'd need the high CFM for the multiple intakes and wye to really work well. If the vac was right at the saw your results may be satisfactory.

Everyone who does things like this says 95% of my cut are cross cuts…. True but for the other 5% you have to take the whole thing off….. and then have NO dust collection. Save time and energy. Get a Roseau 5000. It’s not perfect either but when hooked up to a vac it gets at least as much as this thing plus you never have to take it off and haven’t reduced the functionality of the saw.
