Dewey Cooper gives his take on Duke Roufus and his training methods

Duke Roufus has come under a lot of fire recently for how he conducts training in his gym. Several prominent MMA fighters have come out publicly and said that he goes at things too hard and often allows bullying of some students. Among those making such claims are Pat Barry, Rosa Namjunas and Eric Schafer.
We spoke with kickboxer and trainer Dewey Cooper, who once fought Roufus, and got his take on the whole situation. He talked about the training methods used by Roufus, as well as the recent tragedy where a Roufus amateur was killed while competing in a Roufus event.

Martial arts is a lot like weight training when it comes to being selective about going hard AF and also dialing it back. If you go full bore, life or death every time you lift, youll be severely injured in time and youll be walking around all day every day with a blow up central nervous system. Discretion keeps you in the game and you cannot keep progressing without it. Same as martial arts. Getting dropped and rocked every single time you train is gonna turn your brain into peanut butter real quick, or worse. Idk if thats what was truly going on here, i wasnt there so i cannot speak on it, but i do know its the fastlane to retirement or worse

Roufus isn't the only one to blame, but he is one of the people who could and should have stopped the fight. There has to be accountability for the sake of lives and the sake of the sport.

Work smarter not harder! Train like how you fight, fight like how you train! It's not all the same... good training is not hard training! Death to all unprofessionals! Many martial arts have not finished training! How many serve in the Military? Trainers are not Doctors! Stay in your lane! He should have been prepared and conditioned!
