Even though its a completely different setting, I actually found it to be very similar story telling to the earlier seasons. They really set the stage with the new characters and I think that Dexter interacts with them in a way that is similar to how he's interacted with anyone in the previous seasons. The dynamic he has with teenagers is quite the same. He's friendly with people in town and the police department. So even though its a different place with different people, I still get a feeling of familiarity from it.

however leaving large blood spots in the white snow and forgetting to clean it up doesn't fall into the category of being sloppy. Any first time killer with an IQ over 60 would look for and clean up the large blood spots in the white snow let alone a former blood spatter analyst and former killer with well over a 100 kills. Hopefully the writing isn't going to insult the audiences intelligence as though Dexter would forget the utmost basics of covering his tracks because he's rusty after a 10 year layoff.

It was so heartbreaking when the deer died.... I was destroyed. They did such a good job of establishing the importance of that deer to Dexter. Almost like it was symbolic of Rita all over again, a symbol of purity and innocence snuffed out senselessly, making him snap again. I hated it but I loved it, if it makes sense. Between that and him pushing away his son and then reuniting with him, I cried quite a bit. So well-done. I also noticed Angela looked a lot like his sister, and I'm sure that was intentional. I'm hoping this is a great sign of things to come. I'll probably still love it, no matter where it goes. I think I might just be the only person that loved the entire series, all the way up to the end credits of the series finale. I loved the ending. That was somewhat predicated upon my own interpretation that the final minutes of him being a lumberjack were indicative of him also dying in the hurricane, and this was meant to be his purgatory, forced to relive the trauma of his mother dying by chainsaw, over and over again, as he used a chainsaw to cut down trees. Unfortunately Michael C. Hall himself, in a Reddit AMA, shot that theory down (gently. He said he liked it but never got that vibe from the writers as that being their intention). But even then, I still do love the ending. There wasn't a single season I didn't enjoy immensely. And I think there were only a handful of episodes I wasn't the biggest fan of, even though I still did enjoy them. AHH. I'm just so happy he's back. The last time a favorite series of mine was revived, it was Arrested Development, and it just wasn't the same. And not in this kind of way, with different editing and cinematography and atmosphere. It just felt really forced and weird. I didn't like it at all, and I still haven't finished season 5. So naturally I was hesitant about Dexter, another favorite show of mine, coming back after a similarly long hiatus. But this feels like it's fitting a lot better, and I'm really excited to see where it goes. It hasn't given me red flags like the first couple episodes of Arrested Development season 4 threw up. And I have heard that this is meant to right the wrongs of the final season, and especially the series finale, for people. If that's the case, I hope they enjoy it too!
@GotoMaki4Micah3 жыл бұрын
i liked it till deb died. so many people hate everything after season 4. that was all character development. he was always wanting to be more human and content and not feel a need to kill. i liked him with hannah, as long as he was happy, i liked him with the kids, rita and his son. normally i would consider those things baggage, but dexter himself is so compelling that i want what he wants, even if he chooses to hang up his super hero cape :P that made him intriguing but that not all there is to him. so many want that to be all there is to him.
@davidsavage56303 жыл бұрын
Trinity was shown to be upset over a deer too. And had a sister who died that he felt responsible for. And a son who he has a not ideal relationship with. I'm probably thinking too deep on it but...I wonder if those parallels are intentional..

Agreed Cody that premiere was awesome. Sad to see they didn't bring the original opening credits song back and just update it to the snowy atmosphere of Dexter's new home but it is just great to see Dexter Morgan again. It was also sad to see Dexter's hallucination of Debra and for her to be so different. In the past seasons she couldn't go an episode without cursing and now in Dexter's mind she's there to remind Dexter why he went into exile and to keep him in check. I did like her line about how she's glad she died before Dexter because if she had to live in a world without Dexter she'd be lost. I think that's completely true of the real Deb. The one consistent person in her life was Dexter. Her boyfriends come and go and her parents passed but Dexter was always there.

First thing I said was "Okay, so he got a Deb" missed her so much he is dating a cop, who cusses up a storm, and pretty much acts exactly like Deb calling him on his crap... His comment about their kids dating, would be just like how Deb and him grew up.. Not blood related, but brought together to become a family. I personally felt this was the writers way of showing/closing the door on.. It wasn't just Deb with feelings deeper than sibling love.. That Dexter also felt that way and found a person just like his sister to be with romantically. Almost living vicariously through this person..

Did anyone else notice the blood stains spreading in Harrison’s chest as Deb begged him to deny his parentage?

Yeah, nice observation and I think Harrison is also in his imagination

I think you're right about his girlfriend looking like Deb. For the first time, his girlfriend isn't blonde.

You are absolutely right about Dexter's cop girlfriend - she looks pretty much identical to Deb haha. It was one of the first things I noticed and I wonder if it's intentional? It feels too coincidental but who knows. Might be nothing.

Deb being in love with Dexter was one of the my favorites story lines in the show

Long time dexter fan, thought it peaked at season 4. Really enjoyed the premiere and new setting. I think this show will do very well in streaming format with more condensed storytelling.

Season 8, hated the ending, I understood Deb dying, but him staring out into space in some logging camp, rather he be caught or killed in a poetic way.
@ToroMontana3 жыл бұрын
Debra should have died, but not in such a stupid way. There's no way Dexter would let Saxon live, if nothing else Saxon was a witness. Not only could he rat out Dexter but Debra would be in trouble as well eventually if Saxon talked.

I finished rewatching all 8 season a couple hours before watching this and the change in tone is crazy but I love it! His new girlfriend looking like Deb and having the same job CANT be am accident. Deb is honestly scary as hell now compared to Harry. Way more intrusive and macabre. I do however miss some of the Miami Cuban music from the original run. Can't wait for more!

I completely agree with you about the cop and Deb way to many things in common

I picked up on the Deb/Angela thing too!!! I feel like since Angela shared similarities with Deb without being Deb, being with her was comforting for Dexter. I doubt it was something he would have consciously been aware of. Angela was just a nice mix of all the best characteristics of the women that had been in Dexter's life that he had been close to. So, the relationship made sense to me. Also, I think it is pretty obvious Dexter is more comfortable with police officers and having inside access to a police department, and this was his in as Jim Lindsay. Not sure if that was a conscious decision on his part or not.

My only thing is Dexter tells himself "if I'm gonna do this. I need to do it right. Rule number one, don't get caught" Only to leave a huge blood trail leading back from the woods. Literally the first thing he did was covered up the little spot of blood with the deers blood but forgets about the huge puddles leading back to his cabin. They made him stupid again like in later seasons right off the bat.

@@TwistedReality13 yeah I liked it but I was pissed off about that too.....it was totally out of character for dexter to do that.....

Hi Cody another awesome video, just want to say that you’ve quickly become one of my favourite channels I can’t stop watching your videos, think you’re so funny and your reviews are always so good, thankyou! 👍🏻

I think the lack of fun tone is very intentional, as in the original ending it was pretty clear that Deb dying was a moment that made Dexter go 'oh, party's over, stuff just got way too real,' and he self-destructed and ran away from his life as wholly and completely as he could. He's just been that way ever since, and now when he reverts to his old ways it's just not the same, there's an enhanced guilt associated with murder that was never there for him before he got Deb killed. Before it was just something he had to hide and justify to himself to satisfy this code Harry gave him, but now he sees how it comes back to him and hurts those around him that he wishes to protect, and it scares him of himself and the potential consequences of his choices, as shown through 'mental Deb' in this current season, who is an amalgamation of his remorse and self-loathing.

CODY!!! They killed the intro song 😱😱☹️😞😢😭😭😭 It better come back even if its the final episode. I wanted to hear it so bad.

the gentle pure, gentle connection Dexter had with the white deer. 🤍 ... man, It was so moving it made me cry a little. The deers eyes looking at dexter and trusting him to reach out and touch his nose. I knew that shit stain was gonna kill it tho. This is Dexter after all and not Disney....Maybe that’s what made it even more emotional for me. Geez I love him, Dexter

I think they gave just enough into Dexter's upbringing with Harry as a guide, and instead of giving us an origin story, I feel like we're getting the origin story of Harrison and Dexter taking the place of harry
@dinglbarry12753 жыл бұрын
Great episode! One thing that bugged me and I hope I'm wrong. Are they seriously going to play it off as though Dexter didn't think about cleaning up and/or checking for the few large blood spots in the white snow, because he's rusty, having not killed anyone in ten years? Because that's not rusty stupid, that's sub 60 IQ stupid and ultimately one of the dumbest writing moments of the entire series if that's the case.

I'm wondering if they'll somehow work Batista and Masuka and those old cast members into it. Maybe at the end he'll return to Miami to hand himself in as the Bay Harbour Butcher.
