I’m telling u Rakim should be on every top 10 ever created. I wouldn’t even be mad at top 5. He LITERALLY was the reason rappers started getting more complex and creatives with their lyrics and flows….We talkin bout 86’ “My Melody” came out. Go listen to how everyone else was rapping in 86’. Rakim was rhyming Like Nas while everyone else was rapping like Soulja Boy.

I'm 53 I was into rap from the beginning,Run DMC ,Fat Boys,LL,etc.Then in 1986 I bought the Paid in Full cassette based on the cover alone with no idea what I was about to hear.Long story short I wore that cassette tape out .Gamechanger.

I’m 54 and a lot of us had a similar experience. This shit was next level. The God was dropping science but it didn’t matter that you didn’t know what he was talking about necessarily you just knew that was that shit

Thats crazy, you been here since the beginning! What a blessing! I need to add Fat boys to the list?
@Oldmanjustice9 күн бұрын
@ even being here from the beginning a lot of music was not available outside of NY until ‘79 but we know now. I raised my kids on this music bro and I still listen to the original artists to this day. The music made today is no go for me most of it is trash but it will come back around probably when I’m dead and gone. But you hear and you can appreciate it so it will never die. Appreciate you

Rakim never sold crack - he came from a family of musicians, and by the time he was 18 he was already established as an MC. But, he did roll with some of the biggest hustlers of the time. You're starting to see the lineage now. Nas is off the Rakim tree (with some G. Rap mixed in). Jay-Z is off the Big Daddy Kane tree. Rakim and Kane threw a few subliminals at each other back in the day too, but it never escalated to a full on battle.

Yo Dex if you love this you gotta hit up. Rakim the Pei Mei of Hip Hop, a lot of MCs since have aspired to be as great as him lyrically and stylistically since. All the greats listened to Rakim, all of them.” “I Know You Got Soul” “My Melody” “The Punisher” “Don’t Swear The Technique” “Teach The Children” “Paid in Full” This what my pops was listening to when I was just a baby bro, Ra, KRS, Public Enemy, LL, you got a real deep bag to dip into if you take it the old school route. Wait til you get to Slick Rick who’s like the Willy Wonka of rap if that make sense
@richardlong4199 күн бұрын
It’s almost impossible to say that any one rapper is the GOAT, but there is no doubt that Rakim has to be in that conversation. I mean he has four, and five minute songs where he spits on every second of them! You can’t find anyone today who can even come close to doing that. Great reaction!

I’ve always said “In the Ghetto (Extended Mix)” is the greatest rap song ever made. (Rapper Saigon said it was his favorite song.) Rakim was rapping from another dimension on that one. He tells a couple of stories. The beat (a remix of the album version) is beautiful. The video is iconic. But if you react to it, find the full version. The official VEVO version is unfortunately abbreviated for some reason. Nas chose it back in the day on his BET Top 20 favorite videos. Nas also penned “The Unauthorized Biography of Rakim,” on the Street’s Disciple album. … Thanks, bro!

The Symphony features only in this order = Master Ace/Craig G/Kool G Rap/Big Daddy Kane. Marley is from Queensbridge and is responsible for putting together the Juice Crew, him and Fly Ty. Roxanne and Shan influenced and inspired Nas, they are from Queensbridge. Kane is from Brooklyn. Tragedy would play a huge role in the Queensbridge sound that Capone/Norega, Mobb Deep, Nas etc. He was ahead of his time considering he was a teenager in 88 rapping the way he was. Very Lyrical,
