Fun fact; Teairra Mari - Make her feel good Sampled this track. The whistle part melody specifically. Teairra Mari was buzzing in the mid 2000s because of that Song. She was singed to The Roc in that period too. Jay Z Made a Cameo in the video & a few other notable people.

This is the song that birthed "flow" as we think of it today. When the double sided "Eric B for President"/"My Melody" single dropped in '86, the early '80s style of rapping was immediately outdated and everybody started patterning their style after Rakim. Run-DMC was selling out stadiums at the time, but even DMC said he knew he and Run's time was running out after this.

Rakim estimated in an interview with crooked I that he produced 80% of his catalogue. Eric b doing beats was to continue the story and look of a group. Also, it’s pretty well documented that Eric knew a lot of the real street dudes. Look at the back of paid in full album. Some of the people in that photo may be some of the same that you said you researched in ny streets. He was also very close to Tupac.
