I am SO EXCITED to have found you! Just like you, I was impatient and learned Beethoven's Fur Elise without knowing any music theory. I had to dissect it one note at a time and it took me months. I would like to learn the why behind it instead of learning each thing individually. You're teaching people to fish vs feeding them (with their piano), and I appreciate that.❤

Honestly as a mathematician and programmer this concept seem to generalize really well to all learning: do first then after try to understand. Because in school we are used to theory and then practice but honestly in my experience that's not effective, theory only makes sense when you have soemthing to reference to.

This 💯 💯💯💯 I used to play the piano as a kid from age 5 until 7 and then stopped. 30 years later I decided to pick it back up and got a piano. Decided to learn moonlight sonata knowing it was way too hard for me. It was tough but I spend 4 months just learning that 1 song everyday and can play it well now. Last week I started to tackle Interstellar. Again this piece is way much harder than my ability but that is the way you actually learn and grow. 💪🏽💪🏽💙💙

Actually some really good advice. The thing to keep in mind no matter what you do or try should always be “but does it sound good?” That’s what it always comes down to. You could spend years writing the most technical and harmonically intricate piece ever crafted but if it doesn’t sound good… what’s the point? Conversely there are songs by legendary artists like Lennon and Mcartney and BB King and Johnny Cash which, theoretically, are stupidly simple, but we still play them because they sound THAT GOOD. Always ask “does this sound good?”

I agree, I started by learning licks and chord voicings that I couldn't even use in a song because I didn't understand how, I just liked the way they sounded on their own so I learned them. Then over the years I build up a foundation of theory knowledge and I finally understand those things that I learned but never understood. So it's never a waste of time to learn things even if you don't understand what you're doing, because eventually it will make sense and just knowing this stuff lets you connect the dots easier

Facts. I’m a drummer all my life. Did some minor xylophone when I was a kid so I was somewhat familiar with notes on the piano. But drumming and the xylophone was the same. Learn songs first, then get to practicing developing your most comfortable technique to perform flawlessly. Everyone is different and can’t all be taught by some technique guru or music teacher. I started playing piano recently as I became visually impaired and needed a new hobby. Learned a song I really like within the first couple weeks to get somewhat comfortable.

I started taking piano lessons years ago and of course they teach you theory and reading sight music and one hand at a time. Then I started taking gospel keyboard lesson where I had to learn by watching his hands, no sheet music or comprehension of music theory and it frustrated me. I learned at least 3 gospel songs fully but no theory understanding. Looking back now. It did make sense because the point was to learn common gospel patterns and chords so I could play other songs. I wish I remembered them now. 😒
