The Chevy Impala holds a special place in my heart. My first car at age 16 was a 1969 Impala Custom Coupe with a 396 big block, turbo 400 tranny, and a positrack rear end that could dig holes in blacktop. I bought it for $300 in 1979 and that car was a beast. Only had a 2 barrel carb, but I still maxed out the speedometer that went to 120mph. Mint green with a white vinyl top and the faux wood paneling interior.lol My mom had a ginormous Kingswood station wagon that she taught me to drive in. Trying to parallel park that beast was a real challenge. It was white so we nicknamed it the"great white buffalo" and it was so big it had its own zipcode. A family with 5 kids needed this size of car to get around when gas was like 50 cents a gallon. Caprices and Impalas were some great cars that I cruised a lot of main drag miles back in the day. My brother had a 1966 caprice with a 327 in it and we cruised that car listening to this new band called the Cars singing about a girl named Candy-O. Those were the days.

Of all the Impalas, the 61 model is the one I see the least. While it is the first year of the SS and 409, I feel that it's the most underrated of the 60s Impalas. Very cool find!!

Man that’s nice. Impala’s and Caprices were the literal life blood of my family growing up. We owned them as family cars and used them to build a very successful taxi cab business in our small town. They’ve been such a huge part of my life growing up. They will ALWAYS be close to my heart no matter the year.
@garyblanchard10842 жыл бұрын
Impala AFFIRMATIVE Caprice not so much (except 1973 through 1975).
@williamadams8353 Жыл бұрын
The 1966 Caprice and the 1969 Impala Custom Coupe both were a big part of my first years driving and cruising. My older brother owned the 66 Caprice and was driving 2 years before I turned 16 and bought a 69 Impala with a 396 big block for $300. It was a ten year old car the year I bought it and got my drivers license. Freedom from being a pedestrian in a small town with my first car, and I drove it home from the DMV on my 16th birthday. Put a Pioneer 8 track sound system with some Crayco 6x9s cranking out tunes like Tom Petty, Bad Company, .38 special, and Black Sabbath. Those were the days.

You are a lucky man. I had one of these brand new in 1961 and I always loved the car. Best of luck restoring your ride. What would I do with it? I would restore it back to stock, rebuild the entire suspension, with up graded front disc brakes and redo the interior if needed. Then I would drive it everywhere within limits.

I have always liked the 1961 Chevy Impala bubble top. They are kinda rare, I have seen very few at car shows. I remember my Aunt and Uncle owned two of them back in the early 70s, one of them got wrecked. I was a little kid then in elementary school. The 2nd one they had they bought for my cousins to drive. I would love to see it after it is all restored, they are beautiful old cars.

Those cars are beautiful! As far as the ram horn manifolds, just about every small block Chevy had them, including trucks. There was no horsepower advantage with them (unless you had the Corvette 2.5" ones), they were simply all Chevrolet had until the accessory bolt holes appeared on the cylinder heads in 1968, when the alternator had a bracket there instead of on the manifold. Corvette continued to use the ram horns through the 1982 model year.
